WB Games says that contrary to recent reports, the studios behind the likes of Mortal Kombat and the LEGO games are not going to be sold off.

There’s been a lot of question marks surrounding the future of WB Games as a whole of late. With the Warner Media Discovery Group merger looming large, there’s been a lot of speculation about whether or not game development studios owned by WB Games are going to be sold off to potential suitors in the industry.

A recent rumour originating from Windows Central’s Jez Corden (during the Xbox Two podcast) claimed that WB Games was, according to some documents seen by Corden, considering selling off NetherRealm Studios – developer of the Injustice and Mortal Kombat games – and TT Games – who have worked on LEGO titles almost exclusively.

However, WB Games says that that isn’t the case. In a statement provided to TheGamer, Remi Sklar – senior vice president of global communications at WB Games – stated that both the aforementioned studios would continue to be owned by Warner and were part of the Discovery merger.

“I can confirm NetherRealm Studios and TT Games will continue to remain a part of Warner Bros. Games, and all are included in the Warner Media Discovery merger,” she said.

Recently, NetherRealm Studios confirmed that it was ending support for Mortal Kombat 11, and instead completely shifting focus to its next game.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment recently stated, following the sale of mobile developer Playdemic to EA, that all WB Games studios would focus on making games based on WB-owned IPs going forward. Read more on that through here.

One of the key figures for both games will be at the event.

Near the end of this month, DC is planning to drop quite the treat for their fans with the Fandome event. It will take place over a 24 hour period and have all kinds of different looks at movies, TV shows and video games spawning from various DC properties. We know for a fact that Rocksteady’s next game based on Suicide Squad will be there, but what else is in store? Well, a certain notable someone could be giving us a hint.

Ed Boon of NetherRealm Studios confirmed via Twitter in his usually cheeky way that he would be at the event on a panel with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (he will not actually be with Johnson, it’s just listed alphabetically). But it is, in fact, true that he will be at the event in some capacity. Boon is a long time member of NetherRealm and served as a Creative Director for both the Mortal Kombat and Injustice series.

Considering the context of the event, along with rumors that a new Injustice is in the works as well as something going on with the comic book series tied into the game, it seems chances are good we could get a reveal of Injustice 3. Of course, they could throw us for a loop and bring us information about Mortal Kombat. It would be a very Boon-like thing to reveal something non-DC at a specific DC event. DC Fandome will be held on August 22nd, and whatever comes from this, we’ll let you know.

Could this be a precursor to an Injustice 3?

No one knew quite what to expect for sure when it was announced years ago that NetherRealm Studios, the madmen behind the Mortal Kombat series, would be making a DC-themed fighter called Injustice: Gods Among Us. Thankfully, the game ended up being quite good, and its sequel, Injustice 2, was a strong step up. Now, it seems something new is coming.

The Injustice games also had a comic book tie-in that helped fill in narrative gaps and continue the story from NetherRealm’s fighters. The writer of that series, Tom Taylor, has started to tease something happening with the franchise, posting on his official Twitter letters I and N. It’s clearly using the Injustice font and beginning to spell out the word.

It seems unlikely that a full blown Injustice 3 would be announced in this manner, but we do have reason believe a third game is in development for PS5 and Xbox Series X. So even if this is a new comic continuation, it’s probably not too far off to bet it could tie in to a potential game sequel. We’ve got a few more days before Taylor finishes spelling things out for us, so we’ll let you know then.

The first superhero fighter is free to own on select platforms.

The combination of NetherRealm Studios, the developer most known for their Mortal Kombat series, and the various DC Comics superheroes was a pairing that could have easily gone one of two ways. Thankfully, it ended up going the way of good, and the mashup worked very well. This generation’s Injustice 2 was a great refinement of that system, but it all began with Injustice, and now you can revisit it free of charge.

As announced via the official WB Games Twitter, the game is free to own from now until next week. It’s a bit of an oddball deal here as on PS4 and PC (via Steam) it’s the Ultimate Edition that contained all of the DLC. The Xbox version is only the vanilla 360 version since the Ultimate Edition never released on Xbox One, though it is backwards compatible. There are also Vita and Wii U versions that are still available to download, but it seems they won’t be part of the promotion.

Injustice will be free to own on those platforms until June 25th. Rumors are also that a third game is in development for next generation consoles, so keep your ears to the ground for that.

Software sales remain same over same period last year.

The NPD Group submitted its report on console and software sales in the United States for May 2017. Unsurprisingly in the game sales department, NetherRealm’s Injustice 2 managed to emerge as the top selling game across all platforms.

It was followed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Grand Theft Auto 5 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Sadly, Arkane Studios’ Prey lagged behind in fifth place, though digital sales haven’t exactly been taken into account.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands was in sixth followed another new entry Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia in seventh. NBA 2K17, MLB 17: The Show and Overwatch rounded out the top 10 of the charts.

The report also noted that while portable spending on software was up by 10 percent year-on-year, overall software sales compared to last year remain the same with no growth. What are your thoughts on May 2017’s biggest games? Let us know in the comments below.

NetherRealm Studios defied expectations with the iOS and Android versions of DC Universe fighting title Injustice, not only making it faithful to the console versions but also a ton of fun on its own. The game will soon be receiving arguably one of its greatest updates yet: multiplayer.

NetherRealm have announced the same and have confirmed that you’ll be able to fight friends online. Your status will be tracked via leaderboards so you can see how you stand in the world. As of now, NetherRealm hasn’t confirmed when multiplayer will be arriving but we’re guessing that it could be within the next two months or so.

Injustice is also available for PS3, Xbox 360, PC, PS Vita and PlayStation 4. Have you had a chance to play the mobile version? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below especially for the multiplayer announcement.
