Of the 48 GB install, 35 GB makes up uncompressed audio according to Respawn's Richard Baker.

Titanfall is now out and about for Xbox One and PC, and while the game only has a 17 GB install size – which still takes a while to get installing – the PC version requires a whopping 48 GB install.

According to Respawn Entertainment lead engineer Richard Baker while speaking to Eurogamer, this is primarily due to the uncompressed audio in the game. Of the 48 GB install size, 35 GB is primarily uncompressed audio.

“We have audio we either download or install from the disc, then we uncompress it. We probably could have had audio decompress off disc but we were a little worried about min spec and the fact that a two-core machine would dedicate a huge chunk of one core to just decompressing audio.

“So…it’s almost all audio…On a higher PC it wouldn’t be an issue. On a medium or moderate PC, it wouldn’t be an issue, it’s that on a two-core [machine] with where our min spec is, we couldn’t dedicate those resources to audio.”

Thoughts? Titanfall is still due to release on March 14th for Europe and will be out two weeks later for the Xbox 360. We’ll see how the installation size plays out on the current gen platform then.

Apparently not much more than other first person shooters on the console.

As indicated by the recent pack shot for the upcoming Xbox One bundle, Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall will require up to 40 GB of free space for installation on the next gen console.

“On Xbox, Titanfall requires Xbox Live Gold membership. Titanfall game download card inside marked packages; up to 40 GB required.” It’s not that big of a divergence from typical installation sizes, even on other consoles. After all, Killzone: Shadow Fall on the PlayStation 4 required almost 40 GB of install space, which necessitated the need for the “Play as you Download” feature.

The Xbox One has a similar feature and since UK gamers picking up the console bundle will receive a download code for Titanfall, it remains to be seen if said feature will be available. The bundle will be releasing on February 28th in the UK, while the bundle along with Titanfall will be available on March 14th for £399.99. Titanfall will also be available in North America on March 11th for Xbox One and PC.

We suspect it is for the save games. The rest is the fairly standard audio formats and 1080p support. The game is one disc on the Xbox 360 as well, and looks likes it’s much more optimized than its predecessor.

The image is a little compressed, but you can make out the file size from this. Thanks, Miladesn.

The game will be out in Japan next month, and hits the west in January. So you don’t have to wait long to play Square Enix’s newest RPG.
