Jason Rubin says it will come down to the business model, exclusives and much more instead.

Even though we’re still 4 months away before the next generation of consoles, with the Xbox One releasing in November and the PlayStation 4 releasing this Holiday season, much is still being made about the purported power of the two consoles. There have been differing opinions, of course, but a consensus is more or less beginning to form that it’s primarily about how a developer utilizes the technology present rather than which console is superior.

Jason Rubin, who had co-founded Naughty Dog along with Andy Gavin, and was president of THQ before its bankruptcy earlier this year expressed similar views. When asked by a fan on Twitter about whether one could get more or less from the PS4 hardware versus the Xbox One, Rubin stated that:

@iamnovatribe Once drove a racetrack in mom-van with a pro driver then couldn’t beat his time driving a ferrari- Its the driver, not the car

— Jason Rubin (@Jason_Rubin) July 10, 2013

Didn’t get it? Simply put, it’s about everything but the technology inside at this point, as Rubin explains further.

@iamnovatribe Business model, indy inclusion, price, online services, community, exclusive titles, etc. may matter. The chips won’t.

— Jason Rubin (@Jason_Rubin) July 11, 2013

So even if the Xbox One is technologically weaker than the PS4, it will eventually come down to the features and games when consumers decide between each console. Of course, Rubin expressed his personal views on Cerny as well.

@iamnovatribe I think Mark Cerny’s success with PS4 is a well deserved culmination of decades of hard work and genius. I am a big fan.

— Jason Rubin (@Jason_Rubin) July 10, 2013

At this point, which console will you buying by year-end? Let us know in the comments below.

This was in the 10 year history that 4A Games shares with the former publisher.

It’s already well known that Ukranian developer 4A Games, who recently released Metro: Last Light for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, had a rough time developing the game.

As creative director Andrew Prokhorov revealed to Polygon, “It is a fact that our work conditions are worse than those of other developers outside [of the] Ukraine”. However, it is accepted that “better conditions are earned, and we strive to do this as soon as possible.”

However, one surprising detail was that while 4A Games was still under THQ, recent ex-President Jason Rubin was the only president in the publisher’s 10 year history with the developer to visit them in Ukraine.

“For the last couple of months before the THQ bankruptcy we have been working together with Jason. Need to mention, for the last 10 years of working with THQ (including STALKER time), he was the only THQ president who was visiting our office, sending us feedback as to game improvements, and discussing game troubles with the team.”

In an interview game GameInformer, THQ President Jason Rubin lays down his view of the structure of the console games market and his vision of how it’ll eventually come to mimic that of PC games.

When asked about THQ lack purported lack of 90+ rates games in recent history, Rubin explained what he sees as the fundamental issues with the current structure: ” In general, how do you succeed with games that aren’t Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and Assassin’s Creed? The way the industry has been set up with all titles selling for roughly the same price at retail next to each other is that there’s been a race to make the biggest, baddest-ass game.

“If you walk into a store as a gamer and see a massive $120 million dollar game next to a $30 million dollar game, and a $80 million marketing budget backed that $120 million game up, it’s likely you’re going to pull that one off the shelf.”

And he’s right, why are seemingly all console games, save for the diabolically terrible ones to be swept under the rug and never seen again, priced identically, even if they offer hugely varying levels and types of content?

Rubin then went on to explain how he thinks THQ can compete in the future and how the structure will eventually change: “At the size of THQ, that is probably not the appropriate way of going about this. If you look at a Naughty Dog-sized game, which I can tell you is not the size of Call of Duty but is still an amazing game that’s rated very well, I think we can compete in that area.

“As time progresses, the entire industry will move closer to what we see in the PC model emerging now, which is a lot of different-sized games and different types of games that all get a place in the sun because you can buy things that aren’t $60 boxed goods. If you look at something like Portal, an excellent game that clearly is not a Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto, bingo.”
