Fun AND free mobile games? 25 of them? You bet.

You’ve probably been told that mobile games aren’t for “real” gamers. You know, the ones who spend hours complaining to Bungie or Massive about the latest “meta” in their favourite grind-fest. However, smartphones and tablets have played host to some of the most addictive, bizarre, new-fangled and crazy games imaginable…and so many of them are free. Here are 25 must-play free titles for mobile you have to experience.

Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.

Clash Royale

Supercell’s Clash Royale could have been a micro-transaction enterprise like Clash of Clans or a Hearthstone rip-off. Instead, it’s proven to be a compelling mix of competitive multiplayer, collectible card battling, strategy and tower defense. The rewards also offer a good balance between free to play and premium, enticing you to keep playing without having to spend any real cash.

Grab one of the most fun games ever made for free.

Jetpack Joyride is an amazing game from Halfbrick Studios where you have to manoeuvre a bunch of obstacles and depending on how much distance you cover the speed you travel increases making the whole thing much harder, of course, there are some in-game transactions you can perform to buy some boosters or you can just play the game until you get enough coins.

The game is being developed by an Australian studio called the Big Ant.

“Jetpack Joyride has come a long way in 2012, and we’re thrilled to bring it to PS3 and Vita,” said Phil Larsen, CMO at Halfbrick. “With the expertise of Big Ant and the huge player base on the Sony Entertainment Network, Barry Steakfries is reaching bigger heights and caps off the year in fine form.”

The main theme of the game is to dodge obstacles for as long as you can and the lead character Barry has a jetpack with which he can fly high to avoid obstacles and do other things too.

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

The Android and iOS game makes it to Sony's systems.

Jetpack Joyride was released about a year back for all iOS and Android devices. Developed by the studio made famous by the ridiculously addictive Fruit Ninja, Halfbrick, Jetpack Joyride was, obviously, an assured success. And it was a success. For good reason. It was fun in short bursts, it was enjoyable, it was replayable- it was exactly the kind of pick up and play, on the go experience arcade gamers love.

And now, a year later, it’s been released for the PS3, PSP and PS Vita via the PS Minis program. Is it good? Of course it is. It hasn’t changed one bit. But does it make sense? Not really. Does it have flaws? Yes, yes it does.

But let’s talk about what the game is exactly about first- you play Jetpack Joyride using just one button. The X button. You use it to power your machine gun powered jetpacks and hover above obstacles and lazers and enemies, and shoot them with your machine gun jetpack’s bullets as you go over them. It’s a simple enough concept, as it should be, but mastering it takes time, since the game speeds up as you move forward, to the point it becomes breakneck and you eventually, inevitably die.

It’s gratifying and fun, and maneuvering around the arenas and trying to make high scores and then consequently beat them is highly enjoyable, and due to this simple yet fun nature of the game, you can easily come back to it again and again. The extra objectives that the game gives you the option to tackle while playing- like hovering a specific amount of meters of collecting a specific number of coins- makes it even more fun.

But there’s an issue- there are no leaderboards. Sure, creating high scores and beating them is fun, and having no leaderboards isn’t an issue as long as you’re playing it on the same device with friends, but it takes away a lot of competitive edge and the game loses some replay value, thanks to this. Leaderboards seem like a logical and basic feature that a game such as Jetpack Joyride should have, and their omission is baffling.

There’s also the fact that the game is priced at $3.99. You could buy this game for free on your Android and iOS devices, and the visuals don’t appear as stretched on them as they do here (not that they matter in such a game), but here, you have to pay for what is arguably an inferior version.

And why exactly would you pay for a game that you can play for free on your mobile phone or your iPod? It makes no sense.

So yes, Jetpack Joyride on the PlayStation systems has a few issues, and I wouldn’t recommend buying it if you have an iOS or Android device. But it’s still an enjoyable experience that you can keep coming back to.

This game was reviewed on the PS3.

The highly successful mobile title sees release in Europe and NA PSN stores.

You might not know of Jetpack Joyride. Developed by Halfbrick Studios and Beatshapers, it’s one of the most successful mobile games ever with over 35 million downloads worldwide and clearly unsatisfied with the success, the studios have decided to release the game for Playstation Network.

Playing as a down on his lucky gramophone salesman, who discovers a secret lab with insane technologies, you essentially commandeer a jetpack and go wild, hopping and bopping through an accessible and highly entertaining adventure.

Alexey Menshikov, CEO of Beatshapers Limited stated,“We at Beatshapers are very exicited to work with Halfbrick Studios, license and publish such a big mobile IP like Jetpack Joyride. We hope the PlayStation® users will enjoy the game.”

You can look out for Jetpack Joyride to be available for €3.99 in European PSN stores, and for just $3.99 in the North American PSN stores. Check out the trailer below and see if the gameplay pleases you enough to channel those Rocketeer fantasies.

Okay, people. iOS gaming is not true gaming? I say, bullshit! It is, and it just found its killer app. The game I’m talking about is Jetpack Joyride, and it is so incredibly well made and suited for touch-based devices that I just have no superlatives to describe it.

This game took me by surprise. The one thing I want from iOS games that it should be fun and this game gave me exactly that, and not only that, Joyride totally destroys my scale here. It’s a fun little game, and as the name suggests, you control a dude who has a jetpack on his back and you can tap or hold the touchscreen to float up in the air and send a barrage of missles below killing any dumb enemies running for their lives.

There is a twist here, however, and just like Temple Run, which is another addictive iOS game, the stage increases in speed and you have to avoid obstacles in less time. This can lead to you committing a mistake and thereby ending your run. This aspect of the game makes it so addictive that you simply cannot put it down easily. It devours you till you try to get a respectable score.

This is what I want from iOS gaming in general, and Jetpack Joyride has brought a smile to my face unlike any other game on the platform. It is an incredible game which is filled with collectibles and unique gameplay mechanics like temporarily giving you overpowered vehicles with which you can cover a lot of distance easily and crush any enemies you see. Of course, if you end up hitting an obstacle, you will lose it and will go back to the jetpack mode until you find another one. To get a high score it’s vital you find a lot of these special vehicles, which are cleverly designed, and not to mention really fun to use.

There are coins here as well, and you need to decide whether to collect them or try to preserve your life. You can easily get hit by a missile or an obstacle if you show too much greed, but the lure of those amazing coins with a perfect jingling sound, makes it hard to resist. There are two main counters in the upper left corner which shows you how much distance you covered and how much coins you collected. The coins are optional, but covering a lot of distance determines your place in the leaderboard.

Comparing scores is so great and makes the game highly competitive, and combined with the addictive nature of the game, you can see why I am so heads over heels in love with this game. It can also get frustrating sometimes when you are almost about to beat your previous score and you die at the wrong time and in the worst way imaginable. I literally screamed when this happened to me, but I kept on going and eventually beat my old score. The game is really popular on the iOS for one main reason – it is free!

Yes, the game is free, so you have no reason not to play it and tell your friends about it. This is the sort of games that this platform needs. Games like Temple Run and Jetpack Joyride show that creativity is possible for touchscreen based games, and you don’t always have to make Angry Birds’ clones to milk a successful formula.

Visually, the game is very pleasant to look at. It reminds me of the old school 2d side shoot ’em ups, that were so amazingly fun to play. The sound effects and music is perfectly done as well. And any action you do, be it collecting coins or dodging missiles, you can be sure that it will leave you satisfying. I think it’s a combination of all factors: the visuals, sound effects, addictive nature of the game, that come together to give you a fulfilling gameplay experience.

Jetpack Joyride is available for free on the iOS, so I can’t really bring down the score by saying it is expensive, and considering the game is pretty old now, rating it makes no sense. So just get this game, guys, you won’t regret it. It shows the potential of iOS games on touch-based devices, and I can easily say that the future is bright.

The game also sold 1 million copies – the 14 million figure is because the game is free-to-play.

The way these F2P games make money is by offering an in-game store, and for Halfbrick this was a massive success. They revealed that their revenue had increased a lot due to this.

Chief marketing officer, Phil Larsen revealed this info to Joystiq at the DICE summit. He also said that a new update will be available soon, and it is the biggest one they’ve done.

“There’s an update coming in the next month. It’s the biggest one we’ve done so far,” he said.

Here is a new arcade game from Halbrick the geniuses who mad it so I could not lift my arms up the day after playing Fruit Ninja for the Xbox 360 Kinect. Who new a cell phone app could be so much fun on a console. Anyway next up is there Jetpack Joyride game which looks pretty cool and a little less straining on my arms with the lack of fruit slicing, but that is because it is for the iPhone. Above is the third video dev diary ‘JJ and You’ and below is the first one ‘Simply Awesomeness’ which has a lot more gameplay. As far as the second dev diary well… you can see it when the game gets released on consoles and /or PC. Look for it September 1st on your nifty little iPhone. Don’t forget September is Gears of War 3 Month, with so many giveaways, I think we have too much.
