Sony's Jim Ryan says it's completely up to developers and publishers.

If you’ve been keeping track of Destiny 2, then you’ve probably heard that it will run at 30 FPS on Xbox One X, not 60 FPS. Instead, 30 FPS will be the standard across all platforms. Could it be that Sony Computer Entertainment is telling publishers to not make the Xbox One X version of certain games better (as ridiculous as that sounds)? Eurogamer spoke to PlayStation global sales and marketing head Jim Ryan about the same and basically asked if Sony was encouraging or telling publishers to not make the Xbox One X version of a game superior to the PS4 Pro version. Ryan said he has no knowledge of such a deal

However given that the Xbox One X is much powerful than the PS4 Pro and Xbox boss Phil Spencer’s statement about there being no technical reason why a game coming to both platforms shouldn’t look and run better on Xbox One X, and whether that was a comparison problem, Ryan said, “Well, we’ll see when they launch in six months’ time.

“The number of partnerships, and yes they are big titles, I won’t dispute that, it’s small. There are a handful. There will be hundreds of games published this year and those games, market forces will prevail. If a developer or publisher wants to take advantage of the supposed power of the X, they will do that. If they don’t, they won’t.”

It will be interesting to see how game developers treat the Xbox One X. A game like Destiny 2 should ideally have no problems running at 60fps but then how will developers manage the multiplayer component because there is no way Xbox One will be able to run it at 60fps.

Xbox One X is out on November 7th. What are your thoughts on certain games not quite looking better on the platform? Let us know in the comments.

Jim Ryan talked about "incomplete" games.

Now that the PlayStation VR is officially available for purchase, there have been more than a few people who have noticed that several of the games available for the device are being rated as “incomplete.” CEO for Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe, Jim Ryan recently sat down for an interview where he talked about this issue.

Ryan appeared on CNBC and was asked about whether he felt the PSVR had a large number of games that were very short, or just demos and therefore not complete games. Not surprisingly he took a bit of issue with that characterization saying, “Well, I think I’ll take issue with the use of the word incomplete. We think there’s a really great range of value propositions. As you say, there are full game experiences like Final Fantasy, Batman, Star Wars, but at the other end there are smaller, lighter game experiences priced accordingly, very affordable. For us, it’s really important to have that range of gaming propositions for PSVR.”

While it’s true that the games are priced differently depending on how long and how full an experience they are, the CEO was also a bit misleading in characterizing Batman, and Star Wars as truly full games. The first real, complete game coming to the PSVR will be Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Whether or not there will be backlash to how Sony is handling this issue has yet to be seen as the device is still so new.

Jim Ryan speaks the truth.

Sony has revealed that the PS4 will use Blu Ray and it will be the primary way to deliver content to consumers.

Physical discs aren’t going to go away any time soon according to PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan.

“Clearly, and this applies not just to games but to pretty much every form of entertainment, there is a trend to increased digital consumption, and that is happening now on PS3 and will continue and will probably accelerate on PS4,” he told IGN.

“But the primary delivery mechanism for the big games on the PS4 platform will continue to be Blu-ray discs, for the foreseeable future.”

As expected he has said that digital delivery is not practical in some regions, and being in India this is a valid point and even in Southern Europe, it is difficult to get a standard internet connection to download a big file.

“If you go down to Southern Europe, where we have very big and important businesses, it can take you 3 days over a standard internet connection to download a file of the size, and that’s not fun,” he said.

“There are certain gating factors in terms of internet infrastructure that mandate that the disc-based solution is going to be the primary delivery mechanism for the foreseeable future.”

In an interview with CVG, PlayStation Europe CEO Jim Ryan thinks that respite the upsurge in the digital market, physical disks will remain the primary source of games distribution for at least the next five years, as well as increasing hybridity between the two models.

Ryan told CVG: “It’s interesting because previously the whole debate took a very binary approach. You either bought a game in a shop or online. But what we’re now starting to see the business adopt hybrid models where the retailer is able to play a really legitimate and substantial role in the digital value chain.

Also I would say, and certainly for the next five years, that disc-based distribution is going to be the norm.”

Ryan then went on to comment on the wildly varying average download speeds across Europe, suggesting the infrastructure for digital-only simply isn’t there yet: “If you take Uncharted 3’s file size, and look at the average internet speeds people have in Southern Europe, it would take about two days to download it. So discs are going to be around for some time yet.”

Jim Ryan, in an interview with OPM UK has mentioned that they had good response from customers, and the sales have increased. Although, they are now targeting a younger demographic and family oriented audience with the latest bundles.

“If you look back at the history on PS1, PS2 the vast majority of the business that we did on both those platforms was done at the sub £129 price points,” he said.

“Now we’ve only got to £199 in the UK a couple of month back so you can see there’s still a lot of PS3’s potentially to be sold.

“I think you’ll see us taking the console more towards a slightly younger demographic. More family market. The core gamer will absolutely not be neglected.

“There’s going to be tons of great stuff for the core gamer but from our own studio, third parties there’s some quite interesting stuff happening in a number of areas which would allow us to open up a market that we accessed pretty successfully on both PS1 and PS3 but haven’t yet got to on PS3.”

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
