So much stuff gets released nowadays in various forms and places, and there’s so much free stuff, it can be almost impossible to keep track of everything. But hey, that’s what backlogs are for, I suppose. Today it’s time for the latest free game of the Epic Games Store to be available, and this time we’re going into Norse mythology.

Jotun: Valhalla Edition is a hand-drawn action game where you follow the adventures of Thora, a Viking warrior who died an inglorious death and must battle her way to the tops of Valhalla to prove her worthiness in the afterlife. The game features plenty of action as well as exploration through various aspects of Norse mythology in gorgeous settings.

Jotun: Valhalla Edition is available now for free on PC via the Epic Games Store until December 12th. After that, it will be replaced with The Escapists, a 2D pixel art strategy time.

Jotun developer Thunder Lotus Games has announced that its next title Sundered will be releasing on July 28th. It will be available for Mac, PC, Linux and PS4. If you still have a chance, then head over to Steam or GOG and pick up Jotun: Valhalla Edition for free to celebrate.

You could also ogle the stunning new trailer for Sundered which features beautiful hand-drawn art and showcases some of the cooler “Metroidvania meets rogue-lite” mechanics that can be expected. Given the combat in similar games like Dead Cells, it will be interesting to see how Sundered can match up but so far, it’s looking really good.

Thunder Lotus Games, which brought us the excellent Jotun in 2015, has managed to achieve the crowd-funding goal for their next project Sundered. Sundered was revealed last year as a mix of Rogue Legacy and Super Metroid, a kind of “replayable Metroidvania” title set in a Lovecraftian universe.

The Kickstarter campaign sought $25,000 in funding and managed to hit that goal in less than 24 hours. The total budget for the project is $700,000 CAD with the crowd-funded amount focusing more on polish and balance. Improvements will be made to such aspects as special skill tree nodes, developing new perks and further refining the core gameplay experience.

We also learned a bit more about Sundered from its Kickstarter page – there will be both procedural and hand-crafted levels, secrets, multiple endings and six “massive” boss battles. Abilities like Hook Shot, Double Jump and Wall Run can be used by the player and “corrupted” into more powerful variants. Players can expect a roughly 10 hour campaign that sees scavenger Eshe discovering the secret of the doomsday-esque Terror.

Thunder Lotus, developer of Norse mythology-steeped Jotun, has a new game out in 2017. It’s called Sundered and will head to PS4 and PC. A new trailer and screenshots showcase the same amazing art-style and gameplay that defined Jotun and the story features Eshe, a nimble warrior battling the forces of evil in dank caverns.

The development team noted on PlayStation Blog that, “We know Jotun was far from perfect. With Sundered, we’ve added more complex mechanics, tons of replayability, and meaningful choices. We’ve gone into a darker universe heavily inspired by Lovecraft’s writings.”

The gameplay sounds interesting because it could be a case of multiple playthroughs, which each new “life” offering something unique to one’s abilities. “In terms of gameplay, Sundered can mostly be described as a replayable Metroidvania, close to Rogue Legacy and Super Metroid. You explore an ever-changing dungeon, fight hordes of eldritch horrors, and chose between humanity or madness.”
