Just Cause global brand lead Anne-Lou Grosbois-Favreau told VGC, “It is with great sadness that we are announcing the end of development for Just Cause Mobile. As of July 3rd 2023, the game will no longer appear in digital stores. It is never easy to put forth an announcement of this nature, especially to our fans who have been awaiting the release. We sincerely appreciate the support you have given us.”

Refunds were issued on February 24th to players who purchased any Blue Diamonds (the in-game currency). For Square Enix, it’s yet another cancelled mobile title alongside Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier and Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights.

As for other entries in the franchise, former Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda confirmed last year that a new title was in development. However, there have been no updates regarding its platforms, release window or even if Avalanche Studios Group, which worked on all the previous entries, is involved. Stay tuned for any updates.

As you’d expect, it’s due to development hurdles brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic that the game’s launch has had to be delayed. That’s not surprising in the slightest, and Just Cause: Mobile is far from the only game to have been hit with a delay due to the pandemic. “We’ve had to adjust to new ways of working and that has resulted in delays to our development schedule,” the developer writes in a message.

Just Cause: Mobile will be a free-to-play action title with three fully open world maps, a campaign featuring characters from several Just Cause games, weapon upgrades, and various vehicles and gadgets to use. Outside of the campaign, the game will also have a multiplayer component.

Just Cause is coming to mobile devices next year in the succinctly named Just Cause: Mobile. Announced at The Game Awards, it’s a free to play shooter with online co-op and competitive modes. Players can create their own character and partake in a new story campaign while teaming with characters from previous titles.

Co-op missions are a separate feature and involve playing with up to three other players for battling waves of enemies including tanks and mechs. Triple Threat is a 30 person mode with three teams of 10 players battling on a huge map with vehicles to secure bases. Finally, there’s Challenge Mode which provides Destruction, Wingsuit and Racing challenges for getting the best scores.

Of course, all of the essential gameplay elements of Just Cause – like grappling, gliding, shooting and a large open world – will also be present. Check out the trailer below to see the game in action. Stay tuned for more details on a release date and potential closed beta in the future.
