Ubisoft also reveals units shipped for Just Dance 2014 and Rocksmith 2014.

In its regular financial report for the past 3 months, Ubisoft has revealed that Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag managed to ship 10 million units, marking it as a stupendous success. Though it doesn’t indicate number of units sold, it showcases that demand is very strong for the title.

Interestingly, it shipped 2 million units less than Assassin’s Creed 3 within the same period. Considering that Black Flag released for a new console generation as well as working to overcome the poor reputation brought on by its predecessor, it’s still an impressive feat. Meanwhile, Just Dance 2014 shipped 6 million units, and while 2 million less than its predecessor, it’s still a “leading casual brand on consoles.”

Rocksmith 2014 only managed to ship 1 million units however, with Ubisoft reporting “lower-than-expected” sales. As far as PS4 to Xbox One sales, Ubisoft games on the former managed to outsell the latter at 12 and 9 percent of total sales respectively. The PS3 followed suit with 28 percent of sales versus the Xbox One’s 27 percent.

Meanwhile, the top selling titles are Call of Duty: Ghosts, Just Dance 2014 and GTA5.

Even with criticisms regarding the quality of launch exclusives and hardware issues, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have both been incredibly successful since their respective launches. Sony announced at the beginning of December that the PS4 had sold more than 2.1 million consoles since launch, while Microsoft touted the Xbox One as being the fastest selling console in the US for November.

Meanwhile, Amazon states that both consoles at their peak during the holiday season managed to sell 1,000 units per minute. This makes it fairly more reasonable that Sony will be able to sell 3 million PS4 consoles by December 31st.

The top selling titles on Amazon for the holiday season were also revealed and unsurprisingly, they’re all current gen titles. This includes Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox 360), Just Dance 2014 (Wii) and Grand Theft Auto 5 (Xbox 360). You’ve got to feel a pang of sadness for Nintendo considering the ultimately lackluster sales of the Wii U.

What are your thoughts on the success of both consoles? Will the PS4 emerge victorious eventually or are we just getting started with the new generation? Let us know below.

Ubisoft’s latest installment in its dance series, Just Dance 2014 is now available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the United States. Functioning on motion controls, Just Dance 2014 requires either the PlayStation Camera or Xbox One’s Kinect to perform dance steps according to the song in question.

The game will feature more than 45 tracks which include recent hits such as “Applause” by Lady Gaga, “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke Ft. Pharrell, “Kiss You” by One Direction, “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk Ft. Pharrell Williams and “Starships” by Nicki Minaj and much more, with “Roar” by Katy Perry to be available as free DLC at launch.

The Xbox One version will support up to 6 people playing at once, which should be interesting when group dances come into play. The game will also support Xbox SmartGlass, which you can use to navigate menus and select songs using your mobile device.

Just Dance 2014 will also release in Europe, Australia and New Zealand on November 22nd, with a European launch for PS4 on November 29th. It is currently available for current-gen consoles.

Everything you need to know about Just Dance 2014.

Just dance 2014 is the upcoming arcade dance simulation game that is currently in development under Ubisoft (Splinter Cell and Assassins Creed), it is currently set to be the fifth installment in the already massively popular Just Dance series which first launched in November of 2009 and has since become one of Ubisoft’s most financially successful video game franchises.

On October 1st, 4th and 8th 2013, Just Dance 2014 was released on all current generation consoles (Wii, Wii-U, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) and is also scheduled as a release title for the upcoming next gen consoles, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

+ Quick Jump To

1. Development

2. Gameplay

3. Tracks

Development

The development cycle for the Just Dance series of games has remained largely unchanged since the first game in the series arrived in 2009, since then the games successful mechanics have seen little need for innovation and only minor tweaking, putting an emphasis on gameplay refinement rather than changing a winning formula. Players have been expecting a considerable jump forward in the games overall responsiveness and ability to better recognize player inputs thanks to the technological leaps made with the new Kinect Sensor and PlayStation 4 Eye.

This will give the game a much better degree of recognition when it comes to reading body movements, which are of course the central focus of the game. First announced during the Ubisoft press conference at E3 2013, this latest entry into the dance-centric series is also going to be the first Just Dance game to have a year following the title, rather than a number, with the last game being titled Just Dance 4, which was gifted with the 2013 Kids’ Choice Award.

Gameplay

Similar to all the previous Just Dance games in the series, the players’ goal is to mimic an on screen counterpart as they dance their way through a predetermined dance routine, to a song of their choice. The better the players’ synchronicity with this digital double and their entourage of backup dancers, the higher the score earned. Regardless of which console you purchase the game on, you will still have access to the “Classic” free dance game mode, wherein you choose a track that you want to dance to, and the computer AI generates a dance routine for you to follow. One of the newer gameplay modes, “On-Stage Mode” enables a new multiplayer focused dancing game.

Player one takes on the role of the main act, performing their dance routine as per usual, whereas players two and three fulfill the role of backup dancers performing their own separate routine which is designed to complement the first. If players have enabled Ghost Data recordings, then players can compete against each other’s digital counterparts,(similar to how racing games allow players to compete against ghost copies of their fellow players for a higher score) effectively creating a “dance of” scenario.

An exclusive game mode that’s reserved for the Nintendo Wii U and Xbox One versions of the game is an updated model of the “Puppet Master Mode”. In Puppet Master Mode, one player can choose to alter the game’s rules, current playing track and dance moves for the other 4 players. This is accomplished through the Wii U’s gamepad touch screen, and the Xbox One’s accompanying app “Xbox SmartGlass” as part of Microsoft’s second screen initiative.

Thanks to the powerful new Kinect Sensor, the Xbox One version of the game will be able to support up to six players at once. For consoles that support microphone add-ons, there is also a karaoke mode in the game. Players are scored on whether or not they sing the right notes in the right key, but due to voice recognition limitations, they are not penalized for singing incorrect lyrics or using fractured sentences. Accurate notes is all that matters. The game mode “World Dance Floor”, will be made available on all consoles and serves as the game’s online multiplayer component.

All players around the world are placed on one huge scoreboard where they compete for rankings and high scores on leader boards, to make it fair and balanced; all players must dance to a set track list that cannot be altered. Exclusive to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners is the “Just Dance DJ” mode which is returning out of popular demand. This gives the player limited control over musical beats between songs, but more important when used in conjunction with “Endless Mode”, the player can continue directly from one song to the next differently each time.

Other returning game modes are Dance Mashups, Extreme and sweat versions as well as the competitive battle modes. Players that are utilizing an internet connection can share short clips of their dance routines directly to their Facebook page and twitter feed, as well as the Just Dance AutoDance network. One small change to gameplay is the difficulty, songs used to be rated by difficulty on a scale of numbers. This has been replaced with an Easy, Medium, Hard and Extreme difficulty selection.

Get into the groove.

Just Dance is back. Leave your inhibitions at the door, clear the room of furniture and prepare to sweat like a beast. With the series having amassed total sales in excess of 40m copies, Ubisoft is clearly doing something right. This year’s update adds a few bells and whistles but retains much of the charm and accessibility that makes these titles such good clean fun.

The 47-strong track listing is refreshed with the usual eclectic mix of old and new, with more available to download should you wish. From Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive to Robbie Williams’ Candy, or ABBA’s Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! to Gentleman from PSY, there’s literally something for everyone. There’s even a random Aladdin song – which is a little weird.

First up, the menu screen is a marked improvement on last year’s effort. The way Kinect switches between game modes and selects dances is much better, having dispensed with the Just Dance 4 “grab and pull” mechanic and replacing it with a much more effective hover option to select from a long list of tracks and game modes on the scrolling carousel. If you don’t fancy navigating with Kinect, there’s always the controller – which makes things a lot easier.

"Thankfully, Just Dance has never taken itself too seriously and doesn’t demand the same kind of dedication as the likes of Dance Central to learn the moves perfectly. Sadly though, there’s no dedicated practice mode; Just Dance just kind of throws you into the action and if you mess up, so be it."

Once you’ve picked your track, you’re in familiar territory: bright backgrounds and nicely animated (and appropriately costumed) dancers fill the screen, along with a gauge that shows how successful you are at replicating their moves. At the bottom of the screen, a scrolling display shows your next few moves. Match them adequately and you get points. Get more points than your opponents and you win. Simple. The points earned let you unlock new dances and challenges through the ingame shop, extending the game’s replayability factor.

As before, you and up to three friends can hook up in the comfort of your own living room and have a go at classic dance offs or Battle Modes, Extreme dances and mash ups – each player designated a colourful character onscreen to imitate.

Thankfully, Just Dance has never taken itself too seriously and doesn’t demand the same kind of dedication as the likes of Dance Central to learn the moves perfectly. Sadly though, there’s no dedicated practice mode; Just Dance just kind of throws you into the action and if you mess up, so be it. There are, of course, the usual Kinect issues and a lot of the time it doesn’t seem to matter whether your arm or leg is swung in the right direction as you’re praised for pulling off a perfect move anyway.

"A most welcome addition is the new World Dance Floor, which finally sees the introduction of an online multiplayer mode. If you don’t have friends in the same room, you can now catch up with them online and challenge them to a dance off."

Still, the fact that the accuracy is slightly debatable isn’t a dealbreaker as you’ll no doubt be having too much of a good time to be distracted by little things like that. And besides, it makes the game far more enjoyable for all generations – children, in particular, would be put off if it were too unforgiving. After each dance, the Autodance feature allows you to watch and edit a video of your exertions, which fortunately nearly always makes you look better than you actually were.

And, as ever, you can also sit back and watch other hot and sweaty people around the globe strutting their funky stuff, if you desire. The major change this year though, is that you don’t just have to watch others, you can actually dance against them…

A most welcome addition is the new World Dance Floor, which finally sees the introduction of an online multiplayer mode. If you don’t have friends in the same room, you can now catch up with them online and challenge them to a dance off – and if you haven’t got any friends (!), why not pit your wits against strangers from around the globe. Players join a virtual crew to compete – boys can take on girls or different crews can fight it out – which really adds to the fun.

It’s a pretty comprehensive package and there are loads of other play options if you have the energy: take centre stage and have your friends perform as your backing dancers or sing along to the lyrics displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Then, for the more masochistic gamers, there’s the Just Sweat exercise mode, which – exactly as the name suggests – is where you dance to burn off calories. Play a series of songs back to back as part of a program spanning 10-40 minutes – guaranteed to make you sweat/pass out! Alternatively, you can switch the calorie counter on to monitor you whenever you play.

This year’s Just Dance is brilliant fun and even the most self-conscious dancers – myself included – will quickly get into the groove.

Nintendo and Ubisoft have announced that a Wii U bundle with Just Dance 2014, the newest entry in Ubisoft’s obscenely popular dance based video game series, will be available starting November 22, in what sounds like a suspiciously timed move to possibly maximize sales to casuals even as the other next generation consoles launch.

The bundle will be launching in UK, but it will also be made available in Benelux, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and certain Export EU territories. It will include a Wii U Basic console (which comes with 8GB of memory), the Wii U Gamepad, the Wii Sensor Bar, a Wii Remote Plus, and disc versions of Just Dance and Nintendo Land. So, apart from the space issue (which can be expanded with any USB hard drive anyway), it’s a really good deal.

Just Dance 2014 will also be launching on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, Xbox One, and PS4 in addition to the Wii U.
