If you’re annoyed with the issues plaguing Assassin’s Creed: Unity and Far Cry 4, then you’ll be happy to know that one of Ubisoft’s franchises Just Dance 2015 is going strong and receiving new DLC tracks.

These DLC tracks will be available for current and previous gen consoles and include “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus, “Want U Back” by Cher Lloyd ft. Astro, “Funhouse” by P!nk, “Kiss you” by One Direction and “C’mon” by Ke$ha. This is in addition to the present 40 tracks which include Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” and Icona Pop (with Charli XCX)’s “I Love It”.

Just Dance 2015 is available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. What are your thoughts on the game thus far and will you be picking up the DLC tracks? At this point, Just Dance is an annual fixture as far as games lineups go, and it is still nothing short of a pop cultural phenomenon. It is that rare sight, a casual game that somehow outlasted the very thing that gave birth to it (the Wii) itself and took on a life all of its own. People often like to turn their noses up at the games, but there is no denying that, at the very least for what they are, Just Dance are fun games.

If you have ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes during the making of the games, however- I don’t know why you would have wondered that, to be honest, but just in case that you have- the good news is, this newest video gives us an insight into the development process, from the initial costume concepts and coolest dance moves to the final game that is released like clockwork every year.

Just Dance 2015 is out on all Xbox, PlayStation, and Wii consoles.

The formula is well-known by now: line up in front of the camera with a few friends and follow the onscreen prompts in time with the music. Perform well, earn points and then sit back in a sweaty heap to watch the often hilarious video replays.

Fans of the previous releases will be pleased to see that Just Dance 2015 is pretty similar to last year but has been repackaged with over 40 new songs. There are tracks here that should appeal to all ages but it’s certainly not the strongest line up. You can strut your funky stuff to a wide variety of tunes, ranging from fairly recent hits such as Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Rihanna’s “Diamonds” to the more eclectic Ylvis track, “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)” and Frankie Bostello’s “Mahna Mahna” of Muppets fame. There’s even some traditional (!) Greek dancing thrown in, as well as the classic Tetris soundtrack to make shapes to.

The mega popular “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen and One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” provides the hook to get a younger audience onboard, while Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out For A Hero” and “Don’t Worry Be Happy” by The Bench Men are targeted at the older gamer. There are even some heavier tunes like “Walk This Way” from Run-DMC & Aerosmith for the rockers out there! My personal favourites turned out to be “XMas Tree” by Bollywood Santa and “Epic Sirtaki” from The Bouzouki’s – two songs I’d never previously heard of.

I don’t know whether it’s the more elaborate moves or the high tempo of many of the songs but this year’s entry seems to have a higher difficulty. It just doesn’t seem as accessible as previous versions and may put off some players (especially younger gamers). Some of the moves are ambitious to say the least, with leaps and twists, squats and mad gesticulation – but it’s still an absolute blast as a party game.

The cartoon backgrounds add to the tone of silliness and fun, as does the sound of the audience clapping and cheering during some tracks, or the daft costumes that the characters wear.

The Community Remix mode is pretty cool too, replacing the stock cartoony footage that you need to follow with video excerpts of other players from around the world. Then there’s the Challenger Mode that lets players battle against other gamers online and a new Dance VIP feature that also lets you compete with special guests and compare scores with them.

Your efforts are encouraged by the occasional “Perfect” or “Good” popping up on screen, which boost both your points and place on the leaderboards. Occasionally Kinect will record your moves too, editing the clips together and replaying them at the end of the song. These can be saved, “enhanced” with funny faces or special effects and then shared online so fellow Just Dancers or your Facebook friends can see how truly daft you look.

During our playthrough we found the camera sometimes struggled to detect all players pre-game. Despite the supposed power of the new Kinect tech, accuracy is not a strong point in Just Dance. It often fails to pick up your every move and you tend to be awarded points and “Perfect” scores despite stepping in the wrong direction or failing to flail your arms about correctly. Trust me, I’m not a great mover but I regularly beat my friends!

Although track selection through the main screen is simple, finding your way through the various menus to find the game mode or feature you want is not intuitive. And there’s an awfully big emphasis on the social aspect and competing with others online too.

Personally, some of these features are lost on me, as I prefer having fun with friends locally in the comfort (and privacy) of your own home – there’s little appeal about the wider community seeing me dance! Still, playing online and sharing your experience with others globally works very well and is available if you desire.

Development

Just Dance is one of Ubisoft’s best selling games in one of its most popular series, so despite not having been confirmed, everybody knew that Just Dance 2015 was in development long before it was officially announced. The games official announcement came during the Electronic Entertainment Expo on June 9th of 2014 when Ubisoft took to the stage for their press conference. During this conference they announced Just Dance 2015 and its counterpart (which is an entirely separate and stand alone title) Just Dance Now.

With the titles gameplay mechanics already being rather basic and fundamentally impossible to change without robbing the game of its implied goal which is to, Just Dance. So the developers opted to give the game a broader appeal by making it more accessible to more gamers. They accomplished this by turning something that basically everyone carries into the games Microphone and Sensor. The players Smartphone can be used as the games main input source meaning that you no longer need a handful of plastic microphones and other peripherals to play the game. You need only synchronise your phone with the game through the appropriate website and that’s it, you’re good to go.

This simple but game changing tweak (pun intended) alters the entire feel of the game, giving it a much more “pick up and play” party game feeling rather than a game that requires setting up and doling out of equipment, because most gamers in the target demographic carry a Smartphone, this decision is likely going to reflect well on the game as a whole. It also offers more opportunities for gameplay because more individual players can take part in a game now because of the Smartphone functionality.

Gameplay

Just Dance 2015 is the sixth game in the popular franchise and as such, the formula was getting a little more bit old and drawn out with each successful iteration of the game series. So Ubisoft decided to give the game a more party-like feel by being able to include more players through their new Smartphone Microphone and Sensor functionality.

This allows more people to join in on a game of Just Dance 2015 while keeping the room largely peripheral free, players can join in easily by synchronising their device with the website and just like that, they’re in.

Returning game modes from previous Just Dance titles include the World Dance floor and Auto Dance modes and features. One of the new gameplay modes with new features being introduced is the Community Remix mode. This new gameplay mode allows players to dance along to songs as per usual but with other players on the screen rather than the generic dancers. Other than this, the gameplay of Just Dance 2015 remains largely unchanged from that of its predecessors. Just Dance 2015 is the sixth game in the main series and shouldn’t be confused with its 2014 counterpart Just Dance Now.

Ubisoft’s Just Dance 2015 has just had its full tracklist revealed, and as expected, it’s a series of popular hit songs from the last year or so, which may or may not be the best, from a purely quality perspective, but it will certainly get you dancing, which I suppose is the point. Oh, and it has Let It Go, and Let It Go is awesome, so that pretty much warrants a purchase of the game all on its own.

Just Dance 2015 will be coming to all motion gaming platforms, including Nintendo’s Wii U.

The Wii U has been doing a bit poorer than it should be. It’s an excellent console with some wonderful games, but mass market success has constantly eluded it. Even the power of the incredible Mario Kart 8 could not really help move the console at a desirable pace of sales.

However, eventually, the console is bound to hit a critical mass of desirability and visibility- Ubisoft, one of the system’s most ardent supporters (ones who nevertheless spoke out against supporting it with core games recently) believes that period will be this Holidays, and that the highly anticipated Super Smash Bros. (and Ubisoft’s own Just Dance 2014) will be the catalysts.

“Super Smash Bros. has some of the best moments that Nintendo has shared. I think that franchise could be magical for the Wii U,” they said to GamesIndustry.

“To be honest, we always want more consoles,” they continued. “Just Dance 2015 is resonating very well. We think it will please a lot of [existing] Wii U owners and push more families to buy extra Wii Us. But we also believe that Super Smash Bros. will be a trigger to increase the momentum of the Wii U at Holidays. As a gamer, I was playing [Super Smash Bros.] over ten years ago, and it has some of the best moments that Nintendo has shared. I think that franchise could be magical [for the Wii U].

“Nintendo has some of the best franchises in the world and it knows how to make great games. It proved that with Mario Kart, and it will prove that again with Super Smash.”

Well, Ubisoft, you and I are agreed one one thing- Nintendo are the best developers in the world, with the best franchises in the world. Whether that is enough to save the Wii U, we’ll see soon enough. We’ll see that very soon.

Ubisoft’s massively popular dancing party game, Just Dance 2015 recieved an updated track list today.

The title which eschews the use of things like plastic microphones in its latest iteration sees the worlds most popular dance game make use of connected screens and smartphones as the primary player input this time.

The updated track listing announced at Gamescom 2014 includes the following songs:

Whether or not you like those songs is up to personal taste of course, you can always wait and see what comes along in the inevitable DLC packs.Just Dance 2015 will be launching this October 24th in the UK, October 21st in the United States and October 23rd in Euopre, Middle Eastern countries and Asia.

Ubisoft unveiled Just Dance 2015 at its E3 media briefing, with Pharrell Williams’ popular track “Happy” as the spotlight song. There’s some mechanics on display as well including the ability to work in tandem with other players to complete moves.

There’s also some sharing facilities embedded within that allows you to stream your performance to the world over, which now allows you to embarrass yourself on a global scale. It’s kitschy sure but hey, at least there’s actual gameplay footage to be seen here rather than just words (you listening EA?).

Just Dance 2015 will be released in October for Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4 and Xbox One. Just Dance Now was also unveiled for smartphones, which allows multiple individuals to play together.
