Even with the vast range of IPs available to Microsoft, there are specific titles we'd like to see making a comeback on current-gen platforms.

Upon Microsoft’s acquisition of Zenimax and Activision-Blizzard, it’s become apparent that every big publisher has a venerable treasure trove of IPs that are just laying around. Microsoft and Xbox Game Studios have the benefit of owning a lot more of them following its various acquisitions.

Following the Activision-Blizzard deal, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has cited his desire to work on franchises from his childhood. Inevitably that leads to the question: What other titles could be brought back for the Xbox Series X/S generation? Let’s take a look at 15 of them here.

Scalebound

Set in a fantasy world with dragons, it saw protagonist Drew having a massive dragon named Thuban by his side. Along with functioning independently, one could also give commands to Thuban while fighting. It was also possible to directly control the dragon and enter Berserker mode for increased power. Announced in 2014 as an Xbox One exclusive, the hack and slash combat combined with battles on a massive scale looked promising, especially with up to four players in co-op.

Originally slated for release in late 2016, Scalebound would be delayed to the next year and subsequently cancelled in January 2017. Studio head Atsushi Inaba felt that “both sides failed” when it came to the cancellation and that it “didn’t do all of the things that we needed to do as a developer.” PlatinumGames has expressed interest in returning to the project – especially since Microsoft still owns the IP. It may not happen any time soon but never say never.

While Xbox Game Pass has been praised for providing a wide selection of titles for both PC and Xbox subscribers, it also supports Android gaming via the cloud. This allows for playing big-name games on tablets and phones. But what if you wanted to turn your phone into a retro gaming device? Microsoft has you covered.

On Xbox Wire, the company announced that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers could now play 16 Xbox and Xbox 360 titles on Android phones and tablets via backwards compatible. Check out all of the games below with some having touch controls enabled.

Banjo-Kazooie

Banjo-Tooie

Double Dragon Neon

Fable 2

Fallout: New Vegas

Gears of War 2

Gears of War 3

Gears of War: Judgment

Jetpac Refuelled (touch controls enabled)

Kameo

Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark Zero

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion

Viva Piñata (touch controls enabled)

Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise (touch controls enabled)

More games will be “coming soon” to the service, expanding on the retro functionality even more. Xbox Game Pass continues to grow with more games added each month. Even big new releases like People Can Fly’s Outriders are joining the service at launch. What the future holds for retro games remains to be seen but being able to take some of them on the go is a nice bonus.

Purchasers can still get Alan Wake: American Nightware if they go to the store with their ID.

When most consumers preorder Quantum Break, they will be getting a free code of Alan Wake: American Nightmare. It turns out there are a limited number of people who purchase the upcoming game will actually be getting a download code for Kameo. UK retailer GAME says they had to change out the pre-order offer because of the rating of the games in question.

While Quantum Break is apparently rated as a PEGI 16 game, Alan Wake: American Nightmare has been rated as PEGI 18. Because the game is only available to gamers 18 and over in the UK, the retailer cannot package the two titles together. Because the store chain wants people to still be able to get something for free if they do purchase Quantum Break ahead of time, they are packing in a code for Kameo instead.

While this news is likely to annoy and anger some of those who expected one game and are getting another for this preorder, GAME has done one better. The company says that those who have purchased Quantum Break ahead of time can bring their copy of the game, as well as their ID into their local store. Once they prove they are of an age where they can play Alan Wake: American Nightmare, they will get the free download code for that title as well.

In other words, it turns out that GAME is giving users three games for the price of one, all because the PEGI ratings were different. There’s a little bit of an annoyance but purchasers are getting more bang for their buck. Quantum Break launches for the Xbox One and Windows 10 on April 5, 2016.

Rare said that it wished it “scrapped everything and started again” during their development on Kameo: Elements Of Power.

The title was originally slated for a GameCube release, until Microsoft bought the studio in 2002, and Kameo finally released the title for the Xbox 360.

“I was on that project from start to finish, so it’s quite painful to talk about it in some ways,” said Rare creative director George Andreashe in the latest issue of Edge Magazine.

“We changed direction slightly because of the new audience we were trying to aim at. We called Kameo an elf, but really she was a fairy. We tried to disguise that a few times, but it didn’t really work out. It was a game with a fairy for an audience that likes shooting and killing things.” he said.

“In hindsight, it probably would have been best to scrap everything and start again. And then we jumped on 360 as a launch title. We weren’t far off finishing [when that happened].”

Despite the negative claims, he admits that “sales-wise it was pretty healthy”.
