Why isn't there more noise being made about ReCore?

You couldn’t be blamed if you weren’t too hyped about ReCore, the Xbox One and Windows 10 title from Comcept and Armature that will be arriving on September 13th. This is a game that was supposed to be exclusive to the Xbox One but is heading to Windows 10. Granted, that’s the case for many former Xbox One exclusives but for a new IP like this, it kind of dulls the appeal.

"How does this all tie back to ReCore? Well, it’s again another case of a new IP that doesn’t quite have that huge marketing push."

Not that it matters either way. If a developer makes a good game, then it deserves its recognition. I’ll have fun playing it and I’ll recommend that other people play it. Unfortunately, in the games industry, when judging a game’s success, it’s about more than just “Well, I enjoyed playing it” (pretentious as that may sound). Take Until Dawn, for instance. That’s one PS4 exclusive that succeeded despite having a long development cycle, being a relatively new IP and having very little marketing might behind it. That too in a year when Sony wasn’t exactly blossoming with exclusives.

How does this all tie back to ReCore? Well, it’s again another case of a new IP that doesn’t quite have that huge marketing push. When it was first showcased at E3 2015, this seemed like an amazing new IP with a strong female protagonist. Flash forward to E3 2016 and we have a snazzy trailer and…that’s it. Compare this to Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3 or even Sea of Thieves and you’ll begin to wonder why there wasn’t more time devoted to it. Yes, there have been gameplay demos that emerged courtesy of other media outlets but it feels like Microsoft isn’t really pushing ReCore as much as it should. Where are the “Making of” trailers, especially given the talent that’s on this game?

Think about it for a minute. Armature Studio has designers and employees who worked on Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Keiji Inafune is the man behind some of Capcom’s most treasured franchises including Mega Man and Resident Evil. Joseph Staten was in charge of directing cinematics for the Halo series at Bungie. He also wrote the story for Destiny before it was scrapped, causing him to depart the studio. That’s a pretty strong roster to tout and then you tell people that this team is creating a new IP? How is this not getting more attention?

"All indications from Microsoft point to ReCore being great value for your money and worth investing in. Then why in the world isn’t it being pushed more?"

There could be any number of factors, including Inafune’s recent lackluster release in Mighty No. 9 and the controversy that followed. But surely the other talented developers would be enough to offset that. One could argue that it’s a $40 title because it’s relatively small. Heck, that’s why I thought it was $40 and not getting nearly enough attention. The genre itself isn’t exactly the stuff of marketing dreams either. Imagine a third person, Mega Man-esque shooter/platformer in a new universe and boom, you have ReCore, at least from a casual bystander’s perspective. A few minutes watching the game is enough to indicate that this isn’t the set-piece heavy drama that adorns titles like Tomb Raider and Uncharted. And hey, more power to developers for creating experiences that are divergent from the norm but set pieces are the norm because they impress people.

Regardless, the game isn’t $40 because it’s viewed as a small title (which by extension means less marketing). It’s because Microsoft wants to offer a strong experience at great value to build a fan base. This would indicate it has plans for the franchise. I could understand not pushing ReCore because it’s a new IP and you have no idea how it could perform. The game could be short and not warrant a $40 price tag. However, all indications from Microsoft point to ReCore being great value for your money and worth investing in. Then why in the world isn’t it being pushed more?

Look, I’m not telling you to skip the game if you think it looks interesting. It’s just a shame to see new IPs like this that have to flourish simply on word of mouth. When good games are recognized, pushed and receive support, that often means the developers behind said games can thrive and make even more good games.

"Hopefully, ReCore and other future titles that may not have “Halo” or “Forza” emblazoned on it receive as much investment and publicity especially when that could lead to more such great game in the future."

And while I railed on Sony earlier for not pushing Until Dawn all that much, it did give a strong amount of publicity to The Witness despite its long development cycle. Lo and behold, The Witness broke $5 million in sales for its first week, which can be attributed to both console and PC sales but it’s more about getting the word out there. No Man’s Sky, as controversial as it may be, received strong support from Sony including time on stage at E3 and has been pretty successful even if too much hype may been its undoing.

What happens if ReCore is a good game and doesn’t sell well simply because not many people knew about it? Where will that leave Armature or Inafune, especially when this might be the latter’s attempt at redemption for Mighty No. 9?

There’s a fine line between advertising one’s game and really pushing it to the moon. Microsoft has done a great job letting consumers know about its biggest exclusives but should push its smaller, newer IPs like ReCore all the more. Once again, whether the game is good or bad, there’s a way to let your fans on Windows 10 and Xbox One know more about it even for the purpose of whether they should be playing it. Hopefully, ReCore and other future titles that may not have “Halo” or “Forza” emblazoned on it receive as much investment and publicity especially when that could lead to more such great game in the future.

Still looks good. Yup.

We haven’t had the chance to see much of ReCore ever since it was announced- we got to see a pretty cool announcement trailer last year, and then another trailer at E3 this year, where we got to see some gameplay footage, but that’s about it, really- for a game that is due out soon, we’ve seen surprisingly little of it.

This new trailer changes that. The trailer, which came out for Gamescom, shows us more gameplay footage of the new game, which looks to be a cross between Mega Man and Metroid, showing us an Xbox exclusive that looks unlike any other Xbox exclusive so far.

ReCore is being worked on by Keiji Inafune, the creator of Mega Man, and recently behind the infamous flop Mighty No. 9, in association with Armature Studios, comprised of veteran developers who worked on the Metroid Prime games- it has a lot of pedigree behind it, so it may yet turn out to be a great system defining title. It launches on September 13 on Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs.

Haven’t had enough leaks? There’s more where that came from as Comcept’s ReCore has had its first gameplay screenshots leaked.

According to NeoGAF, ReCore will apparently be out on September 13th in North America, Latin America and Asia Pacific. The last part doesn’t include Japan where it will release on September 15th. Europe and other regions worldwide receive it on September 16th.

The screenshots themselves look pretty good though it’s the official gameplay reveal we’re most interested in. If ReCore is indeed out this year, then Microsoft’s Fall line-up is looking pretty strong with Halo Wars 2 and Forza Horizon 3 rumoured to be joining as well.

There’s plenty of reason to be excited for ReCore alone though – it comes from Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune and former Bungie writer Joseph Staten. What are your thoughts on the screenshots? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more information when Microsoft’s E3 presser rolls around on June 13th, 9:30 AM PDT.

Comcept’s ReCore hasn’t had a ton of information floating around recently. The action adventure title was announced last year at Microsoft’s E3 presser and poised to release in Spring 2016 but was subsequently delayed. This E3 promises new information and perhaps a more concrete release date.

Until then, we’ll have to make do with some new concept art courtesy of the E3 2016 “Into The Pixel” Collection. The artwork showcases the main character and her pet machine venturing into a desert cave in a scene not unlike that showcased in the initial reveal trailer. At the very least, it’s nice looking concept art…even if it tells us next to nothing new about the game.

ReCore is currently in development for Xbox One and Windows 10 (announced earlier this year). It comes from the mind of Keiji Inafune, currently prepping Mighty No.9 for release this month, and former Bungie writer Joseph Staten, currently in charge of ReCore’s story. What are you hoping to see from the game at E3? Let us know in the concepts below.

Creator Keiji Inafune says delays due to the number of release platforms.

Comcept’s Mighty No. 9, designed by Megaman creator Keiji Inafune, was quite the successful Kickstarter in 2013, raising $3.8 million. However, the project has seen its share of woes and delays, first being listed for an April 2014 release date and then eventually being pushed into Q1 2016.

Thankfully, it doesn’t seem like there will be another delay. According to Inafune at Unreal Fest 2015 (via Inside Games), Mighty No. 9’s main source of delays has been the number of platforms it will be releasing on. This game’s platforms include PC, PlayStation Vita, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U and Mac OS X.

If the game proves to be successful though, it’s likely that there will be a sequel. One can only hope that it doesn’t encounter as many delays as its predecessor.

What are your thoughts on Mighty No. 9 at this point and are you still looking forward to it? Let us know in the comments.

Everything you need to know about ReCore.

ReCore is an action-adventure game that is being produced by Comcept, Armature Studios and Microsoft and it will appear exclusively on the Xbox One. The game is being produced by Keiji Inafune who is the man behind the much-beloved Mega Man series and has also had a hand in the Resident Evil and the first two Dead Rising games. Also a veteran of video games, but untested on the current generation, Mark Pacini is directing ReCore. He is best known for his work on the Metroid Prime series.

Development

ReCore was first revealed with a video at E3 2015. The game is being made exclusively for the Xbox One, though there were rumors at one time that the title might eventually make it to PC. This was because of stated goals by Microsoft to offer as many as it’s Xbox One games as it can on Windows 10. At the same event it was announced that Comcept, was partnering with Armature in order to create the game for Microsoft.

In early September it was announced that Joe Staten was hired by Microsoft as a “senior creative director.” Staten is best known as a writer on Destiny and Microsoft said that he will be helping out the development team of ReCore as well as other big projects that are being created exclusively for the Xbox One. The music for the game is being put together by someone who also has an impressive resume when it comes to the video game industry.

At the end of the reveal trailer, Microsoft acknowledged that they expect to be able to launch ReCore in the spring of 2016. There have been no other details shared about a release date for the game.

Story

The story of ReCore takes place in a post apocalyptic period. The reveal trailer shows off a young woman named Joule who is trudging through the wastelands on a nearly deserted planet (it is not clear if this is supposed to be Earth or another planet entirely). As one of the last human beings left alive, she is constantly on the hunt for parts and supplies. In the reveal trailer, Joule is joined by a small robot that looks like a dog named Mack which aids her in getting along through the rough terrain. The developers have said that most of the planet is controlled by robotic enemies that are bent on wiping out the rest of the human race. The people who are putting the game together say that the only way you will be able to survive is by teaming up with robotic creatures like the dog who will serve as your companions. Mack is a member of a robot faction of which there are a few others in the world that want to help Joule and the last remaining humans survive against the robot faction that wants them wiped out.

The trailer shows a fight between Joule and the dog with some spider-like robotic creatures. When the dog becomes overwhelmed, the girl takes the what appears to be a power-core from the dog body and puts it into a robot that looks like some sort of a gorilla. The gorilla then helps the girl continue on in her mission. It’s unclear how many of these robots the girl will be able to befriend, or whether or not they will all be using the same core. It’s not clear beyond that battle what kind of other obstacles will be found along the way or whether the girl ever interacts with other people.

Gameplay

ReCore is an action adventure game that uses a third person perspective. There is not much known about the gameplay beyond the setting, which is in the distant future. While footage of the game shows the main character taking the core out of one robot and putting it into another, it is unknown whether this will have any sort of puzzle aspect where certain cores will only work in certain robots, or whether any core will be interchangeable with any friendly robots the girl meets during her travels.

The development team has said that the environment in which the game takes place will shift and change depending on the weather. In particular, the maps the game is played on will be drastically changed after a large sandstorm. Sometimes an area the player was aiming for will be blocked off. At other times something might be revealed that was completely unseen before the storm hit the area. It isn’t known if the robotic companions can be controlled, or whether they operate entirely independent of Joule.

Characters

Joule is the main character of the game and she is also described as being one of the last human beings left on this planet. While the developers have said that she is “alone” it’s not known if there will be other human NPCs that Joule will meet as she goes about her travels. The other main character is a robotic dog named Mack. Mack is part of a faction of friendly robots but it is not known whether other robots make an appearance or whether Mack is just transferred from one body to another.

There are enemy robots that are shown to have an appearance of a spider in the reveal trailer. Other enemy robots have been mentioned in promotional material but what they are is not yet known.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game

Keiji Inafune's action side scroller still needs time to quash numerous bugs and other issues.

Comcept’s Mighty No. 9, billed as the spiritual successor to Mega Man and designed by Keiji Inafune, has been delayed into the first quarter of 2016. This was initially seen to be the case when product listings for the game changed the launch date to next year.

In a message to backers (via NeoGAF), Comcept said that, “We are unable to confirm a final release date at this time, however we will be aiming for a release in Q1 2016. Once a solid release date is set, we will announce it immediately to our backers and fans.

“All of the core content for the game is developed and in a complete state. However, there are still bugs and issues pertaining to the online features that are included in the game. These bugs and issues have a direct affect on enjoyment of the game, so a decision was made to work these issues out before release.

“We appreciate your support and patience regarding this matter, and look forward to delivering Mighty No. 9 to our backers and fans in the best state possible.”

Mighty No. 9 has already seen its share of delays over the year and it was somewhat expected that it would be delayed again. Nevertheless we’re still looking forward to it so stay tuned for more details.

Of course, that might be putting the cart before the horse.

Keiji Inafune’s Red Ash, being pitched as a spiritual sequel to the Mega Man Legends franchise, much like Mighty No. 9 was pitched as the spiritual follow up to Mega Man, has received a new stretch goal on Kickstarter- a PS4 version. If the game reaches $1 million in crowdfunding on Kickstarter, we are being promised a PS4 version for the game.

Of course, as of right now, the game isn’t anywhere close to meeting even its base funding goal, let alone a stretch funding one- the developers were asking for a pretty reasonable $800,000 to get the game funded. Now, with less than a week before the funding period concludes, the title has only managed to raise $470,000.

Whether or not the PS4 stretch goal actually stimulates enough interest in the project for it to at least meet its base funding goal remains to be seen. We will keep you posted on it regardless.

It's possible that only physical retail versions were delayed.

Keiji Inafune’s Mighty No. 9 may be facing a delay. According to NeoGAF, several retailers like Amazon and GameStop have updated their listing to include 2016 as a new placeholder release date.

However, if you head over to Xbox Live Marketplace or the PlayStation Store, you’ll spot the same September 15th release date as before. So what’s going on?

It’s possible that only the physical versions of the game were delayed while the digital versions go ahead as planned. As it stands, a representative from Deep Silver – which is in charge of publishing Inafune’s game – decline to offer any comment to GameSpot.

If true, this wouldn’t be the first time Mighty No. 9 has been delayed. It was originally scheduled to be out in April 2015 but was subsequently delayed to September. Take this recent delay news with a grain of salt but suffice to say, the lack of comment from Deep Silver isn’t exactly promising.

Microsoft had a damn good E3 this year, and one of the reasons was their reveals of games coming exclusively to the Xbox One, that we could be entirely sure would never be coming to the PS4, thanks to Microsoft doubling down on its first party studios, partnerships, and initiatives. One of the games that we got to see thanks to this renewed focus was ReCore, an action adventure game set in a post apocalyptic setting featuring a struggle against robots who have taken over the planet. Pretty standard stuff, but then you realize that the game is being headed up by Keiji Inafune, the creator of the Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Mega Man and Onimusha series, and that he is working with Armature Studios, which is comprised of the people who worked on the Metroid Prime trilogy.

Yeah, that is one hefty resume right there.

Anyway, if you were hyped for the game, then no doubt you will appreciate the reveal that we got today, of the game’s boxart. It’s nothing special, it’s pretty simplistic in style and technique, as well as content, but at the very least I will give it props for being different from every other damn boxart in the market.

ReCore launches next spring, exclusively on the Xbox One. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage.
