That's a lot of Minecraft...

Acquiring Mojang and Minecraft two years ago might have been the smartest move they’ve made in a while. Ever since Microsoft bought it, Minecraft has sold 50 million copies across PC, consoles, and other platforms, for a total of over 100 million copies sold worldwide to date- this makes it the highest selling game of all time.

It is unclear, however, if the 100 million number also includes the ‘Pocket Edition’ that is sold on smartphones and tablets, because the press release only mentions ‘other platforms’ after explicitly mentioning PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.

Minecraft is currently available on PCs running Windows and Mac, as well as Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, and smartphones and tablets running iOS, Android, Windows, and Kindle. With 106 million units sold, Minecraft would be the fifth most populous nation in the world if each copy it has sold were a person. You can check out a handy infographic Microsoft and Mojang have sent with the press release below for this, and other cool facts.

For iOS and Kindle devices.

Human head, the folks who brought us the excellent Prey, are now bringing us a brand new survival horror game. It is called Lost Within, and you can see what the game is like for yourself in the trailer above.

The game, which has been announced for Kindle and iOS devices so far, looks like a brand new, AAA take on the classic Resident Evil games (albeit on a mobile)- everything, from the setting being one mansion, to the kind of scares, fights, and interactions that are involved in the game seem to evoke the PlayStation and Gamecube classic.

‘Survive a haunted asylum and its monstrous Inhabitants,’ the developers said. ‘Confront a legendary killer who prowls the abandoned wards. Scavenge and create makeshift weapons or conserve your resources and employ stealth tactics to sneak past the lurking horrors. When all else fails, run for your life or find a place to hide. To escape, you must uncover the asylum’s dark mystery: the shattering secret that led to its condemnation. There are many doors, but there is only one way out.’

The game will be published by Amazon. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage.

If this is true, it would be massively disappointing.

Rumors and rumblings of an Amazon console have been heating up for a while now, and their recent purchase of Double Helix Studios (the folks behind the excellent Xbox One reboot of Killer Instinct as well as the just released reboot of Strider) only added fuel to the fire. And while a lot of people were expecting an announcement soon with a release later this year, it appears that it might be closer to us than we thought.

Apparently, Amazon will be releasing a set top box for TV, powered by Android, that will run both licensed Android as well as proprietary software; it will probably be another piece of hardware that slots into Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem, and as such, it might use Kindle OS (which is a heavily forked and modified version of Android). The release is currently pegged to be in March.

If this is true, then this news is actually fairly disappointing, as that would make the upcoming Amazon console not a true console and a competitor to Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo as originally thought, but yet another microconsole with a focus on Android games, such as Ouya and its ilk. A major new entrant into the console market has the potential to shake things up massively and freshen them up a little (the last time we had a new entrant into console gaming was more than a decade ago, with Microsoft), so Amazon squandering its chance like that would be heavily disappointing.
