Despite the fact that not a single Kingdom Hearts title had released on an Xbox platform, the Xbox One version of Kingdom Hearts 3 released day and date with the PS4 one last year. It was a bit odd, but the power of Disney was probably presumed to be more powerful than the need to follow the long-winding and convoluted storyline of Kingdom Hearts. Well, for Xbox players who want to take that leap, they now can.

With no real announcement, the two Kingdom Hearts HD Collections, HD ReMix 1.5 + 2.5. and HD 2.8 Final Prologue appeared for purchase on the Microsoft Store, which you can check out here and here.

Together, the games encompass the entire Kingdom Hearts saga. Combined with Kingdom Hearts 3, that means the whole thing is now playable on Xbox One. Of course, we also know more Kingdom Hearts games are in development- two teams, in fact, are dedicated to pumping out new entries, so one can never really be done with this franchise. But you can at least get lost in the weeds of the series if you so desire.

Square Enix have revealed their lineup for this year’s Jump Fiesta, the annual event in Japan every year where Square Enix reveal a whole lot of major details on their upcoming games. It seems like fans of all of Square Enix’s games and properties should find something to get excited about this year.

Among other things, Square Enix will be showing off Final Fantasy 15, NieR Automata, the 3DS and PS4 versions of Dragon Quest 11, and the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD– the big mysterious holdout and omission from that list is Kingdom Hearts 3, that Square Enix appear to benot talking about at all until 2.8 HD is out, for some reason.

Square Enix will also have a Dragon Quest event on November 17, where they will look to share new details on the game, including, hopefully, a release date. You can check out the full lineup of games coming to Jump Fiesta below:

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue has an incredibly dumb name, but the game remains important to the Kingdom Hearts mythos- in fact, it directly leads into the long awaited Kingdom Hearts 3, so if you are a fan of the franchise who hopes to play that game, it’s best for you to go through Final Chapter Prologue.

To drive home the importance of this game, largely a port of the 3DS game Dream Drop Distance, with enhancements and extra content, Square Enix have released one more trailer for this game- allegedly the last one. The trailer shows off some of each of the games included in the 2.8 HD Collection– Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD, Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage, and Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover.

Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD, which will be what I call it henceforth because its true name is ridiculous, is almost here- the final remaster collection for the series (until the first two remasters are put in one collection and re-released for the PS4, that is) features Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, which is the 3DS exclusive Kingdom Hearts game, as well as some other new content, all apparently important to understanding what goes on in Kingdom Hearts 3, which will be out… some time.

Anyway, there are new screenshots out for this collection, which you can see for yourself below. They’re actually scans from the newest issue of Famitsu Weekly in Japan (via DualShockers), so the quality won’t be the best, but I imagine it will be enough for most Kingdom Hearts fans who are just eagerly awaiting new news and updates, too.

Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD is due out on PS4 in January 2017. You can check out the new screenshots for yourself below.

The one big problem with Square Enix’s attempted consolidation of all the wide ranging Kingdom Hearts entries, that came out across five separate platforms, and all maintained narrative continuity, was that they put their collections for all games on PS3.

This was well and good, but Kingdom Hearts 3 is a PS4 (and Xbox One) game, and PS4 is not backwards compatible with PS3 games. Worse still, Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD is a PS4 game- so you still need at least two platforms to enjoy the entire series.

Well, Square Enix are attempting to fix that. Today, they announced Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, which will consolidate the two PS3 Kingdom Hearts collection into a single collection on PS4. Playing through 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, as well as 2.8 HD, should catch fans up on Kingdom Hearts 3, for when that releases next year on PS4 and Xbox One.

Look, Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD isn’t going to be a visual stunner. The bulk of the game began life as a Nintendo 3DS title, and the rest of the package won’t win any awards for its graphics tech either, no matter how good the artstyle and the visual embellishments may be. So the suggestion that the game may support 4K output on the PS4 Pro isn’t preposterous- especially when the 4K output in question may not even be native.

Twitter user aibo is reporting that an interview with Kingdom Hearts Director Tetsuya Nomura that is due to be released later this week reveals that the game will support 4K output on the PS4. The interview doesn’t clarify whether the 4K output will be native or upscaled (though I can feasibly see it being native, given the game’s technically humble roots), but for a lot of tech fans, maybe the idea of Kingdom Hearts in 4K is enough.

Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD will be launched on PS4 exclusively later this year.

Kingdom Hearts 3 may not be out for a while, but in the meanwhile, there is Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD, which will be releasing on the PlayStation 4 exclusively to catch people up with the series’ at this point vast, sprawling, and disparate lore, and bridge them into the next numbered entry in the series.

Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD will include multiple important story elements, including a PS4 remaster of the Nintendo 3DS exclusive Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, as well as new story elements and segments that all will help players better understand Kingdom Hearts 3.

But if you’re still not convinced, Square Enix released a brand new trailer for the upcoming collection, which launches January 2017, at the Tokyo Game Show. It’s long and informative, and also in Japanese, but hey, it’s not like we’re able to understand much of what goes on in Kingdom Hearts anyway, right? So it’s par for the course.

Square Enix will be sharing a brand new trailer for Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD tomorrow, the company shared on the Kingdom Hearts series’ official Twitter account today. The trailer will have some new gameplay, and will hopefully show off some of the new additions to the package.

Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD is a PlayStation 4 remaster of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, the game that was launched exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012, and was cited as being ‘mandatory reading’ for fans looking forward to Kingdom Hearts 3. It will be getting multiple new additions and content to further flesh the story out as well, to properly bridge the gap between the numerous already existing installments of the game, and Kingdom Hearts 3, which still does not have a release date.

Unlike Kingdom Hearts 3, which is coming out on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, however, Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD will only be available on PS4- looks like Xbox One gamers may have to entertain the prospect of going into the new game completely blind.
