Today’s a pretty big day for game launches. In addition to the launches of Resident Evil 7 and Yakuza 0, today also marks the day that Square Enix have also chosen to launch Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8, the bizarrely named collection of all remaining Kingdom Hearts games and projects that weren’t already remastered and put on PlayStation, in the west.

To celebrate the release of the collection, Square Enix have released a new launch trailer. The trailer shows off Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, the formerly Nintendo 3DS exclusive entry in the series that is supposed to lead directly into the long awaited Kingdom Hearts 3, as well as Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage and Kingdom Hearts χ [chi]: Back Cover. Which should really all serve to establish the point that Square Enix are terrible at coming up with names.

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 is available ow exclusively on PS4. You can check out the new trailer below.

Goodbye despair.

We don’t get to see a total PlayStation victory on Japan’s hardware and software sales charts all too often- between the Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo have had these charts on complete lockdown for a very long time, now. However, this week marks a rare occurrence where Sony is the big winner all around.

The highest selling system in Japan last week was the PS4, with 47,000 units sold (of which 7,900 were PS4 Pro systems). This was ahead of the Nintendo 3DS, which came in second last week 34,500 units. The PS4 was buoyed last week by the release of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8, which finished first on the software charts with 137,800 units sold. This is actually a bit of a low showing for the traditionally big franchise, but we can probably attribute that to it primarily being a remaster.

DanganRonpa 3 also released last week, and the PS Vita and PS4 versions took the second and third place on the sales charts respectively, pushing down 3DS perennial toppers such as Pokemon Sun/Moon and Super Mario Maker to fourth and fifth place.

It was a reasonably good week in Japan last week- and there is no doubt that Sony, at least, are relieved at PlayStation’s ability to still sell well in the nation.

Why is it not on PS3 or Xbox One as well?

One of the announcements that came out of Sony’s TGS show this year was Kingdom Hearts HD II.8, a collection which would include the remaster of the Nintendo 3DS exclusive Kingdom hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, as well as Kingdom Hearts 0.2, a new episode in the series that would pave the way to the upcoming, long awaited Kingdom Hearts III.

Exactly why such an important part of the series mythos is exclusive to the PlayStation 4 is a question many have asked since this announcement, especially since Kingdom hearts III itself is also due out on the Xbox One, whenever it does launch. In an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu, Kingdom Hearts director Tetsuya Nomura explained the reason for this PS4 exclusivity.

Since Kingdom Hearts 0.2 is using the technology that will ultimately power Kingdom Hearts III, the game cannot be made available on the PS3, like every other major kingdom Hearts game so far has been- hence the PS4 exclusivity, Nomura explained.

That makes sense, of course. But why not also put it on the Xbox One?
