That's not a good look for Square at all...

The release of Final Fantasy 15 later this year won’t just be the release of a video game- no, according to the plans that Square Enix shared at their Final Fantasy Uncovered event back in March, the launch of the game will be an event, as we are going to be bombarded by a deluge of cross media Final Fantasy projects and merchandize from all directions at once. Something like that should manage to create enough excitement ad buzz around the game to hopefully compel even those who ordinarily would not pick it up to maybe check it out.

Or at least, that was probably the plan, anyway- you see, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy, the prequel movie to Final Fantasy 15, covering all the events that led to the game, just opened at the Japanese box office, and it languished, performing miserably and earning only ¥35,516,460 (roughly $345,000), selling only 22,818 tickets. Yes, the movie had a limited release, but its performance is abnormally dismal even considering that.

What does this mean, then? There are multiple explanations: the most terrifying one for Square is that there are not many people interested in Final Fantasy 15 after all, in spite of all of Square’s attempts to sell people on it. A slightly more reasonable response might be that people may be interested in the game, but they are definitely not interested in any of the peripheral media surrounding it. There is also always the possibility that people who were burned by Square’s previous cross media efforts, such as Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, and so were hesitant to give a new Square movie a chance.

Whatever it is, this is not an auspicious start to the Final Fantasy 15 project.

Regis and the Glaive battle to protect their kingdom.

A new trailer for Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15, the CG film set in the Final Fantasy 15 universe, has been released. It offers even more context to the war taking place between the Nilfhelm Empire and Kingdom of Lucis following the departure of Noctis.

Running parallel to the events of the game, the film will star King Regis (voiced by Sean Bean), the bodyguard-esque glaive Nyx Ulric (played by Aaron Paul) and Lunafreya (voiced by Lena Headey) as they battle the forces of Nilfhelm. Monsters, machines and magic collide in epic battles and pretty much explain what’s happening back home while Noctis is on the run.

Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15 premieres in Japanese theaters next month with a release in select US theaters on August 19th. It will release on Blu-ray and other digital formats in the Fall. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy 15 is out on September 30th for PS4 and Xbox One.

What are your thoughts on the trailer? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more information.

Behind the scenes video featuring English cast released.

Final Fantasy 15 fans in the US take note – Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15, Square Enix’s CG film set in the game’s universe, will be heading to select theaters on August 19th. That’s more than a month before Final Fantasy 15 releases on Xbox One and PS4.

Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15 runs parallel to the events of Final Fantasy 15 and will focus on King Regis and Lunafreya during the inherent turmoil taking place. It’s out in Japan on July 9th and will head to digital and Blu-ray release in the Fall.

In a new IGN video, actors Sean Bean (Regis Lucis Caelum ), Aaron Paul (Nyx Ulric) and Lena Headey (Lunafreya) actually discuss their roles in the film and offer a behind-the-scenes look at their work on the same. Hopefully Sean Bean’s casting isn’t an omen of sorts regarding the fate of Regis.

Final Fantasy 15 is out on September 30th and is rumoured to be appearing at Microsoft’s E3 presser. Stay tuned for more details as E3 rolls on.
