"Disappointment" doesn't begin to describe it.

Just because a game looks promising in its pre-launch buildup doesn’t mean things are actually going to shake out that way. That’s a lesson that we’ve learned on more than a few occasions over the years, with the list of games that have looked promising at first only to end up disappointing being a long one. Here, we’re going to talk about a few games that did just that.

LAIR

An obvious pick for a list such as this one, Lair is forever going to hold the dubious crown of being one of the most bitter disappointments in gaming. Factor 5’s excellent track record and promising pre-launch showings suggested that Lair was going to be a huge early PS3 hit, but upon its release, the game turned out to be sort of a broken mess, thanks in large part to its frustrating motion-heavy controls. Even now, close to two decades later, it’s hard to get over the disappointment that was Lair.

Here are 15 games from the last 15 years that garnered huge hype and excitement pre-release but ultimately failed to deliver on those expectations.

The medium of gaming, much like any other, has equal parts games that are great and others not so great. That being said, there have been many games over the years that have garnered huge hype and expectations but failed to deliver on what was promised. To that effect, here are 15 of the most disappointing games from the last 15 years.

Lair (2007)

The PlayStation 3’s Six-Axis controller might not have been the most ergonomic when compared to its competitor the Xbox 360 controller, but it was certainly ambitious – sporting a fully-featured motion control setup. Factor 5’s dragon warfare game Lair was made to utilize the motion control functionality, and a big-budget and marketing coalesced to form huge hype and of course, expectations for the game. After a year-long delay, Lair would finally release in 2007 – to middling critical reception. Reviews at the time criticized the game’s motion controls as being cumbersome and unintuitive among a number of things, and the game quickly became one of the biggest disappointments of the year.

Whether self-published or under a larger company, these developers suffered their share of outside meddling.

Whether you’re a small studio making ends meet or a huge triple A developer, game development is tough. The process is rife with creative decisions, technical issues, and general turmoil. So of course, it doesn’t help when a publisher – who helps bankroll a project and markets it – utterly mucks about with development. Let’s take a look at 13 games that suffered from publisher interference, both allegedly and obviously.

Dragon Age 2

Don’t you just love it when a publisher wants a sequel for your game? Especially with just 14 to 16 months for development? Such was the fate that befell Dragon Age 2 thanks to Electronic Arts and as a result, BioWare ended up cutting a lot of story content and scaling back on the locations (besides crunching continuously). Granted, the sequel would find some appreciation, especially for what it offered in its short development cycle, but such haphazard development wasn’t needed.

The PlayStation 3 has had a number of classics but these games scrape the bottom of the barrel.

The PlayStation 3 era is remembered with fondness, even with all the trials and tribulations the console faced at the beginning. While we look back on classics like Uncharted, The Last of Us, Resistance, Killzone and so on, let’s not forget some of the terrible games that also released.

Haze

Haze should have had it all. It was developed by the team behind TimeSplitters, backed by a large publisher in Ubisoft and one of the key exclusives for the PlayStation 3. Lo and behold, this epic single-player shooter was simply a mess of glitches, bland visuals, terrible writing, boring gameplay, dumb AI, and so on. It’s a shame too because the premise was genuinely interesting.
