The game is the first fully downloadable arcade game based on Lara Croft and not only includes a new isometric view in the brand new single player adventure, but also includes a franchise first two player offline cooperative experience. This marks the beginning of the Downloadable Lara Croft campaign which will run until the end of 2010.

On September 28 – Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will be released with full online support on PlayStation Network and PC (via the Steam network). On the same day we will offer a free update for Xbox 360 gamers to download which will include the introduction of two player online co-op as well as full leaderboard support and voice chat functionality.

“DLC for us means Downloadable Lara Croft,” said Darrell Gallagher, General Manager of Crystal Dynamics. “It all begins in August with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light releasing on XBLA and runs through to the end of the year with the additional packs we will be offering. Oh and be prepared for a few surprises.”

From October to December the Downloadable Lara Croft campaign continues with 5 packs available across all formats. The first three are expansion packs featuring a combination of all new puzzle, exploration and combat experiences in the game and new areas to explore. The further two packs are playable character packs, offering gamers the chance to experience the entire adventure without Lara Croft and Totec and instead with some other well-known videogame characters…

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will be available on Xbox August 18, 2010 as part of the Xbox Live Arcade’s Summer of Arcade for 1200 MS Points and for PlayStation Network and Steam on September 28, 2010 for $14.99. The game is rated T for Teen by the ESRB.

The new Tomb Raider spin-off will follow the adventures of Lara Croft, who is searching the mysterious Temple of Light, and finding a new ally known as the Guardian of Light.

Global brand manager Karl Stewart has said that: “We’ve gone down the road of implementing Steam DRM where we’ve committed to the US being an exclusive and we’re going to make a decision as to whether or not we’ll use different distribution channels, But I think for now, because it’s online and it’s got leader boards, Steam offers us the best opportunity to hit a broad audience with that type of game.”

“Tomb Raider’s got a huge following, when you look at Tomb Raider games in the past and how many times they’ve been pirated. I go on some BitTorrent sites and within the first 48 hours there’s like four hundred thousand downloads, it’s crazy,” he said.

“The biggest fear we have is that people are going to be inquisitive and are going to download it.

“Given that Tomb Raider has traditionally been a single player game we have the risk of people saying, ‘I never really wanted to play the online mode, I just want to play as a single player’ You don’t have to do the leader boards, you don’t have to go online. We had to mitigate those risks by doing things like DRM.”

Developed by Crystal Dynamics, Guardian of the Light will be digital title. There are some serious changes to this next game in the series. One of the changes is the camera. Instead of third person view the game will now employ an isometric view. The second is is the co-op mode wherein you can fight alongside  Totec, a Mayan tribesman, who wields a spear and shield to overcome traps, zombies and other enemies. The game will be shown at GDC this year, so may be we can have more information then.
