Considering it’s a cutesy game in a world full of them, it’s nice to see Laughing Jackal add some new features.

Some of these include online leaderboards which let you test your skills against other Hungry Giraffe players worldwide, Achievements, Worldwide Calorie Counter which keeps track of all the calories eaten by every single player, an all-new store menu, a new Angel Feather powerup which save you from certain death (each download giving you 5 Angel Feathers before you have to buy your own), new upgrades for negating poison, obtaining more boost from low-calorie foods, store more Hard Hats, and much more.

Hungry Giraffe  was commercially successful, with over 100,000 downloads worldwide.

A 20 foot tall, 1200kg giraffe needs a ton of food each day just to survive. But, oh no! That’s all there is to this game. Play Hungry Giraffe once, and you’ve basically seen all there is to be seen. While this lack of variety and innovation is definitely working against this game, it also makes for a simple and enjoyable experience, basically because what the game does, it does rather well.

You have to make sure that your giraffe eats everything edible that appears on the screen- from apples and strawberries to tacos and burgers. Eating food is what keeps the giraffe going, it’s what gives it strength to climb further upward. Some kinds of things give it more fuel than others- eating tacos will give you a larger boost than eating bananas.

But that’s not all the giraffe comes across. There are anvils and hammers and dumbells and other such things which are placed dangerously close to the food, and you have to avoid them as best you can. If the giraffe eats these, it gets weighted down, its speed slows down, and the danger of falling out of the screen is higher.

Then there’re the poisons. Eating these poisons has adverse affects, with the giraffe throwing up all over the screen. This blocks your view, and while pills can reverse this condition, it’s best that you avoid poisons too.

It’s a very simple premise, as you can see, and there really isn’t much to talk about. The game has a solid and enjoyable foundation, and you can pick it up and play it whenever you feel like and have tons of fun with it. It’s that kind of game. The visuals are charming and pleasant to look at, and the soundtrack’s nice. But there’s nothing out of the ordinary here.

Hungry Giraffe is a very ordinary, very simple game that won’t really stick out in your memory, but will give you several hours of enjoyment.

Laughing Jackal have today announced that Hungry Giraffe, will be coming to the North American PSN store on February 7th, exclusively and free for PlayStation + users, before going on general release on February 21st priced at $3.49.

Established in 2005, Laughing Jackal are the developer of PlayStation minis such as Duæl Invaders, Vibes, Ace Armstrong vs. the Alien Scumbags, Stellar Attack, Cubixx, Orbit, the Fighting Fantasy series of gamebooks and the zombie chain reaction puzzler OMG-Z.

Laughing Jackal have today announced that their PlayStation Mini game Hungry Giraffe will be coming to the European PSN store a week earlier than originally planned on February 1, exclusively and free for PlayStation + users, before going on general release on the 15 February priced at £2.49 (€3.49).

Laughing Jackal’s latest PlayStation minis title, Orbit, will launch on the 6th December in North America and the 7th December in Europe for PlayStation Plus members who will be able to pick it up for free for two weeks, after which it will go on general release for the price of £2.49 / $3.49.

By collecting the money mysteriously floating in orbit around the planets, you’ll give the project a cash boost, upgrading shonky systems and gaining new ships to move beyond the Moon.

Laughing Jackal have announced that their arcade-action puzzler, Cubixx HD, will be on sale in Europe between the 16th and 30th of November for the price of €3.99 / £3.19, as part of Sony’s Trial and Unlock sale.

Cubixx HD was one of the better PSN games we played this year. In  our review this is what our Editor said about it:

“A classic retro title given a modern day revamp… and it works really well. Maintaining all of the addictive qualities of its predecessors, Cubixx HD is a great game solo or with friends.”

Cubixx HD will be released in Australia on the 9th November 2011 for $12.95.
