Boss Key’s Lawbreakers is the newest game by Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski. A hardcore hero/class based arena shooter, Lawbreakers requires precision and command over the game’s controls and mechanics.

It’s a hard game to get a grip on- but that’s why we are here with our guides. We’re going to help you master the game, and hopefully come to grips with its litany of mechanics and economies. In this guide, we talk about leveling up faster and earning Creds, the in game currency) quickly.

LEVELING UP TIPS AND TRICKS

You get XP to level up simply by playing through the game- there is no trick to do this quicker that doesn’t involve simply playing through the game. That said, do keep the following in mind:

• You get XP for completing a match- even if you lose
• Don’t focus on just getting your kill count up! Focus on completing objectives as well, which nets you XP for that specific mode
• Try to get specific achievements in a game, like being the MVP- that, too, nets you bonus XP

EARNING CREDS QUICKLY

In Lawbreakers, Creds act as the primary currency of the game, and are used to earn cosmetic items like weapon skins, character skins, and profile portraits. There are two ways of earning Creds in Lawbreakers:

• Once you complete a game, you get ‘loot crate’ Stash Drops, which have a rare chance of giving you Creds. Keep in mind the chances of gaining Creds this way is low
• You can buy Stash Drops with real world money, which increases the chance of you scoring Creds

That said, remember, the more Stash Boxes you open, the more duplicate items you might accrue. Why is this important? Because duplicate items will automatically be swapped for money.

STASH DROPS

Stash Drops are earned in game when you level up. Each contains four items- with at least two items in each being the lowest possible item rarity. There are five Rarity tiers for items found within Stash Drops:

• Grey – Base
• Green – Advanced
• Blue – Superior
• Purple – Exotic
• Orange – Boss

Lawbreakers is a paid for $30 game, which comes with all characters and classes unlocked upfront. Much like Overwatch, it counts on you wanting to unlock costumes, skins, camos, and so on for your characters, and much like Overwatch, predicates its entire in game economy around these, meted out via RNG loot drops (albeit Overwatch is, unlike Lawbreakers, full price, of course).

UNLOCKING THE TWITCH PRIME SKIN

If you are a Twitch Prime member, you get free loot in Lawbreakers:

• 3 “Bleed Purple” Weapon Skins for the Lobber, Firefly, and Arc Blades
• 4 Weapon Stickers: FrankerZ, Kappa, PJ Salt, and Bleed Purple

To gain these, go to Options, the go to the right most tab. where you can link your game with your Twitch account. If it is a Twitch Prime account, you will end up getting all of this loot, which you can then apply to your character in the customization menu.

There are multiple game modes in Lawbreakers– and each actually plays fairly differently from one another (some, like Blitz Ball, play totally differently), leading to different gameplay loops and different strategies.

In this guide, we walk you through each of the game modes in the game- this part should be obvious, but you can’t actually expect to do well in the game if you don’t know what it is that you are supposed to be doing. Thankfully, most modes are easy to understand and grasp- and once understood, they are also great fun.

TURF WAR

Turf War revolves around territory control- there are three zones on the map. Once a team gains control of a zone, that zone locks. Once all three zones have been claimed (in total, not necessarily by one team), a short intermission begins, following which the ones become neutral again. The team to reach the score limit, or the team with higher points at the end of the time limit, wins.

OVERCHARGE

Overcharge is basically Capture The Flag- you fight for control of a battery, and try to take it back to your base, where it slowly regains charge. Once it reaches 100%, you need to let it overcharge to score a point. The first team to reach 3 points, or the team with higher points at the end of the time limit, wins.

UPLINK

Uplink basically works identically to Overcharge in a lot of ways- gain control of a download module, take it to your base, complete a download, score a point. The first team to score 3 points, or the team with higher points at the end of the time limit, wins.

OCCUPY

One of the most nonsensical modes in the game, Occupy has you stand in the radius of a zone of control that moves all over the map to score points, and to prevent the enemy team from gaining points. Reach the score limit, or have more points at the end of the time limit, to win.

BLITZ BALL

This plays like American Football- fight for control of a ball in the center of a map, and then take it through a goal near your enemy player’s base to score a point. The first team to score 8 points wins the game.

Lawbreakers is hugely nuanced, and requires mastery of its mechanics for you to actually do well in it for higher level play. That is really the kind of thing that comes with practice- so the more you play, the better you will get at the game.

That said, there are some general tips and tricks you can keep in mind that can help you win matches and perform well. Doing well is paramount not just for yourself, but also for your team- unlike Call of Duty, this is not a game where you can attempt to lone wolf it.

• Familiarize yourself with each class, and their abilities- even if you don’t plan to play with them, it is useful knowing what you might expect should you run into them in a game
• Make sure to check your stats and scoreboard frequently during a game to keep track of how things are going. Press the Touchpad on the DualShock 4 to call up the scoreboard
• Always be on the move! Lawbreakers is as much about mobility as it is about dealing damage
• Think out of the box- your weapons and abilities can be used in ways not intended or immediately obvious. Experiment, and learn from your mistakes
• Blind fire when necessary- sometimes you might be pursued relentlessly, and aiming down sights might now be an option. Blind fire.
• Embrace verticality- even if you aren’t playing with a class that can hover or fly, use the zero-g areas to take advantage of the z-axis.

There are nine classes in Lawbreakers, each of them with their own quirks that must be understood and mastered. We’re here to help you with that with our series of guides on the classes- such as this one. In this guide, we walk you through the Wraith class.

The Wraith is possibly the most effective, the most devastating, but the most difficult class in the game. Meant presumably for higher leveled and advanced players only, Wraith can offer scope for lots of high level techniques and strategies and nuances, but only to someone who is intimately aware of all the movement and combat intricacies of the game, and can therefore leverage everything that Wraith has to offer.

WEAPONS:

• Spektor: An auto machine pistol
• Wasp: A short sword that also transfers forward momentum
• Stinger: A sticky explosive projectile

ABILITIES:

• Slide: A highly efficient movement maneuver that can be used for movement and offense
• Chrono Switch: Slows down enemies it hits, leaving them open to your attacks

Lawbreakers has nine classes- and unless you are caught up on all nine of them, you might as well just give up hopes of achieving much in higher level play for the game. Thankfully, we are here to help you out wth that- and in this guide, we give you a thorough overview of the Vanguard class.

Vanguard is a class specializing in movement- both of its abilities highlight its movement capabilities, and its weapons are all meant to be used in close quarters as you bail out of there- except for the Hydra, which is meant to be used as you move.

WEAPONS:

• Hydra: A gattling gun that gets more accurate the longer you fire it
• Pulsar: A quick fire palm thrust, effective for close range combat
• Meteor Shells: A cluster of five grenades, effective in tight quarters

ABILITIES:

• Afterburners: Lets you hover around the map for a short duration
• Starfall: Launches you into the map, highlights targets, then slams you into them to deal impact damage

Cliff Bleszinski’s newest game is now out. Lawbreakers takes a lot of cues from Blizzard’s Overwatch structurally, but in terms of aesthetics and actual gameplay, it has the kind of sensibilities you expect from a Cliffy B game.

Bleszinski cut his teeth on PC gaming- so of course it makes sense that his newest game runs like a dream on PC. That said, of course, given the sheer range and permutations of PC hardware that can be found on the market, you may run into trouble running the game on your rig. That’s where we come in. In this guide, we attempt to address some of the most common problems found with the PC version if Lawbreakers.

But first, the specs:

GENERAL FIXES

Generally speaking, some basic troubleshooting tips should always help you resolve whatever issue you are facing with the PC version of any game. The same holds true of Lawbreakers as well. If you are running into problems, maybe first attempt the following steps, and if they don’t work out, look into some of the more specific fixes we have below.

• Make sure the drivers on your PC are updated
• If you have two GPUs, make sure you are using the discrete GPU instead of the integrated one
• Set Lawbreakers‘s priority to High in the Task Manager
• Turn off any background programs, including firewalls, chat clients, video recorders, and overlays
• Try lowering visual settings on the game to see if that improves game performance

STUCK ON MAP LOADING

If you are stuck on the map loading screen, the only fix is to exit the game, exit Steam, and then wait a while to restart the game. Note that you must wait a while before you restart the game- starting it too son after quitting basically puts you back in trying to load the game that was unable to load and got you stuck to begin with.

NGS FAILED TO INITIALIZE PROPERLY

To resolve this issue, run Steam (and the game) as an Administrator.

MAIN MENU SCREEN ISSUES

Change the native language of the game from ‘native’ to ‘eng’ on the bottom of the menu.

UNABLE TO CHANGE RESOLUTION

The only fix to this is to change the resolution at which your computer itself renders for now.

FREEZING

This appears to happen if you excessively Alt-Tab. The solution to this would be to… well, to not Alt-Tab. You can also look into turning off V-Sync, or running the game in Windowed Mode, as a fix.

Note: Given that the wide range of PC hardware out there, the fixes mentioned here may or may not work for you. But it’s worth giving them a shot since these have worked for players who own the PC version of LawBreakers.

There are nine classes in Lawbreakers, and having an understanding of them all can be the difference between winning and losing. Given the nuances each class has, it is unlikely for the average player to spend the time to learn the ins and outs of each of them- instead, we are going to help you learn them with our guides. In this one, we walk you through the Titan class.

The Tank of Lawbreakers, Titans will deal out incredible amount of damage, and also take a lot of time to take down. The trade off is their speed- they are slow to move and slow to fire, so you need to be more deliberate when playing as one.

WEAPONS:

• Hammerhead Launcher: A rocket launcher with impact damage, splash damage, and the ability to detonate ammo mid-air
• Crisper: A sidearm that deals damage to multiple enemies thanks to its Lightning Chain; useful in CQC
• Neutron Mine: Slows down enemies with mines

ABILITIES: 

• Pulverize: A leap that deals charge and impact damage
• Berserk: Shoot lightning from your hands, Emperor style, and also buff up health

Each class in Lawbreakers comes with its own quirks, its own nuances, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. Understanding all of these not just for your own class, but for all the other classes in the game too, can be the difference between winning and losing a game- a good player is one who can play around the strengths and weaknesses of themselves, and of all other players in the game.

In this guide, we walk you through the Juggernaut class in Lawbreakers.

Hugely devastating in the close range, you nevertheless want to be extremely careful with how you play with the Juggernaut. In a pinch, use the Armor Protocol to boost your defense and rate of fire and escape the sticky situation, and try not to get engaged in long range combat, since Juggernaut is useless for that.

WEAPONS:

• Instigator: A close range shotgun that dishes out massive damage (but is ineffective over larger distances)
• Impale: A blade attached to the Instigator, used for close range melee, dealing massive damage
• Armor Protocol: A suit of armor that gives you defensive capability, while also boosting your rate of fire

ABILITIES:

• Holo-Deflector: A non traversable temporary shield that deflects all damage
• Charge: A sprint with the ability to damage all enemies in its area of effect upon impact with the ground
