Recent years have seen several good superhero titles, but what are some of the best with open worlds? Check out 10 of them here.

While the cinematic universes of Marvel and DC are somewhat floundering, video games starring superheroes continue to provide incredible appeal. The power fantasy of embodying different heroes and using their powers in massive settings is just so hard to deny. There are some genuinely incredible games to look forward to in the future, like Iron Man, Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. In the meantime, let’s look back on 10 of the best open-world superhero titles and what made them so great.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

The most successful open-world superhero game is undoubtedly Marvel’s Spider-Man. Available in 2018 for PS4 before arriving on PS5 in “Remastered” form, it sold over 20 million units on the previous-gen console alone. It made you feel like Spider-Man, a given and a nice thing when it came to the combat and web-swinging, but also sometimes like Miles Morales and Mary Jane Watson, which was weird in certain sections.

Nevertheless, its stellar encounters, gorgeous visuals that accurately captured Manhattan, and memorable storyline had us hooked. And while the open world may have adhered to some familiar tropes, the sheer fun it offered, combined with the incredible movement and traversal methods, was simply sublime.

Everything you need to know about Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is the latest in a long line of Lego titles by Travellers Tales, taking classic and large properties and giving them a kid friendly treatment, Lego treatment. Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is a direct sequel to Lego Marvel Super Heroes, tying the post credit sequence of the previous game right into the beginning of this game. The game features an overwhelming number of famous and not so famous Marvel heroes as they work to stop Kang the Conquerer from stealing their worlds and finishing his Megaworld, Chronopolis.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 was released on November 14, 2017 to a middling critical reception, mostly saying that this is a Lego game with all the fan service with repetitive gameplay (such games have grown a reputation for), but appreciating the diverse locations the game pulls from.

+ Quick Jump To

1. Development

2. Story

3. Gameplay

4. Characters

Development

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 was developed as a direct sequel to Lego Marvel Super Heroes, connecting the new game right over the post credits sequence of the last title. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe has progressed, the team at Traveller’s Tales has gained new material to work with, such as a modern appearance for the Guardians of the Galaxy, who featured in the last game based on Comic Book influences.

The story itself isn’t strictly driven by the Movie universe, in an IGN developer interview it was explained that the story was co-written by the team at Travellers Tales and writers at Marvel Comics. Influences from the Cinematic Universe come from the team wanting to draw in the young crowd who are mostly unfamiliar with the epic comic lore and want to see the funny Racoon and his friends they saw in that one movie do some cool stuff.

In the game, Kang the Conquerer is building his ultimate city, Chronopolis, by pulling worlds from their own time, allowing a hugely diverse set of locations from Wakanda to Ancient Egypt and beyond to appear as playspaces within the game. In addition to the larger world and larger story, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 features a larger character roster than before as well, which is crazy since the original title featured 180 heroes.

The 2016-17 Video Game Voice Actor Stike had a major impact on the presentation of the game, forcing a recast of almost all the major characters from Lego Avengers and the previous Lego Marvel Super Heroes game as those actors were all affiliated with the Screen Actors Guild.

Story

Taking place right after the ending events of the first game, where Starlord says the Guardians have arrived for some other purpose, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 features over 30 central characters in the story and over 200 for free play as they take on Kang the Conqueror, who is traveling through different timelines and realities, conquering them, taking their most famous cities and landmarks and merging them into his ultimate city, Chronopolis. This conquest takes superheroes from their dimensions and unites them against Kang as they work to prevent all universes from collapsing by Kang’s hand.

Various other villains also appear through the story, forced into working for Kang, though they have an uneasy alliance and some may turn against Kang in time, according to a developer interview at E3 2017.

Gameplay

As with past entries in the Lego series, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is a Third Person Action-Adventure game designed to be family friendly. Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 moves between basic platforming, action sequences with basic combat, and puzzle-solving scenarios, as well as exploring the open world of Chronopolis. Chronopolis is a world comprised of Kang the Conqueror bringing universes together into his ultimate city, and very diverse locations such as Wakanda, a Marvel Noir version of New York City, the planet Sakarr and medieval era landmarks can appear together.

New to this game is the players ability to manipulate time, which can have a direct effect on puzzle solving and can effect certain characters. For the first time, a four-player competitive battle mode appears, which allows players to enjoy the games combat system in a competitive or semi-cooperative format as they team up to battle each other in the lightest of light fighting games ever created.

Characters

There are over 200 characters playable in Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 and a handful more that act as NPCs. Listing out each of them is well beyond the scope of this Wiki, but we will discuss the major players we now know about.

Kang the Conqueror, voiced by Peter Serafinowicz, is a time traveling villain with roots really, really deep in the Marvel lore, who has the ability to move through time itself. He often uses this to his advantage with technology well beyond the comprehension of modern heroes, even someone as brilliant as Iron Man. Kang however, likes to toy with his enemies, which often results in his downfall. He’ll use advanced technology, but not advanced enough to not be impossible for the Avengers to take down his schemes and just get steamrolled.

The brains of the operation, organizing the literal legion of heroes working to undo Kang’s damage, is Cosmo. The Guardians of the Galaxy appear in a semi-prominent role this time, as they help link the events of the two games together and work together with the Earth heroes to stop Kang. Starlord is their fearless, sometimes in way over his head leader, with Gamora, Wisecracking Rocket Racoon, Drax the Destroyer and the ever popular Groot come along for the ride with him, and they all quickly split up with other heroes to take on Kang and his many cronies.

While it’s impossible to give even surface level biographies for all of the characters in this Wiki, the official story trailer does show off some of the faces we can expect to play as. The core team of Avengers including Captain America, Iron Man and Hulk are present, as well as Ant Man, Spider Man in several incarnations such as 2099. Other characters include Cyclops, Dr. Strange, Iron Fist, Spider-Gwen, Wasp, Beta-Ray Bill, a cowboy version of Captain America, Ms. Marvel, Loki, The Enchantress, Magneto, and Black Panther. They are just a fraction of the characters that can be unlocked within the game or play a role in the story.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.

One of the games you will want to enjoy with them will be LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2– like all LEGO games, it is polished and great fun, and full of great content, child friendly humor, as well as loads of references for older players and fans to catch on to.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is basically the kind of game that you want to play with your entire family; resultantly, it is the kind of game that more people would want to buy on consoles rather than on PC. Which is a shame, because the PC version of the game is really quite good- there are some errors, but it is clear it is a well made, well optimized product.

That said, there is, of course, always the possibility that you run into some problems- this kind of thing can be hard to avoid given the sheer variance in PC builds that there is. So if that happens to you, never fear- we’ll help.

But first, the specs:

MINIMUM:

RECOMMENDED:

Please be advised that the following methods are to be used at the sole discretion of the system owner. GamingBolt or its staff members take no responsibility for problems that may arise or issues that may occur from trying the below. Always remember that official support is always the best support.

GENERAL FIXES

Generally speaking, some basic troubleshooting tips should always help you resolve whatever issue you are facing with the PC version of any game. If you are running into problems, maybe first attempt the following steps, and if they don’t work out, look into some of the more specific fixes we have below.

Make sure the drivers on your PC are updated

If you have two GPUs, make sure you are using the discrete GPU instead of the integrated one

Set LEGO Marvel Super Hero 2‘s priority to High in the Task Manager Turn off any background programs, including firewalls, chat clients, video recorders, and overlays

Try lowering visual settings on the game to see if that improves game performance

Make sure you have Windows updated before you attempt to play LEGO Marvel Super Hero 2.

GAME CRASHES

This error is known to occur with an out of ate GPU or its drivers. Please ensure your GPU drivers are updated

NO INPUT

This error occurs when the game asks you to press ‘L’ but doesn’t detect you pressing anything. There is a reason this happens- the L it means is not the keyboard key, but rather, the left stick on a controller.
… yeah
So, just connect a controller and press the left stick. Any XInput controller will do.

CONTROLLER SPLIT SCREEN

The game switches to co-op mode as soon as you connect the controller, which can be… annoying. The fix is simple- have the controller plugged in before you boot up the game.

Note: Given that the wide range of PC hardware out there, the fixes mentioned here may or may not work for you. But it’s worth giving them a shot since these have worked for players who own the PC version of LEGO Marvel Super Hero 2.

Some of the best family friendly games that we routinely get are the LEGO games- and the latest one of those is LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2, which brings the entire Marvel universe of heroes and characters together for another great hub base collectathon romp. It’s the kind of thing you will love to play with your kids over a holiday.

It’s also got a surprisingly nuanced and textured story that you will appreciate for all the subtle and clever nods and references it makes to other Marvel media. If you are interested in checking that out- or if you are stuck in the game, and don’t know where to go and what to do next- then what you need is a walkthrough, which we are only too happy to oblige you with.

Just make sure, though, the walkthrough has full spoilers- so maybe don’t skip ahead of where you are in the story, okay?

There's not a lot of innovation here, but fans of Marvel and the LEGO series will find a lot to love in this game.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is a game that is perfectly content following in the footsteps of its predecessors. Though it expands and mostly even improves upon much of what we saw in the original LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, you get the feeling that there’s not much new here. There have been dozens upon dozens of LEGO games thus far, and if you’re familiar with the series’ formula and all its trappings by this point, as many of you might be, then there’s not much new to see here. However, that doesn’t mean Marvel Super Heroes 2 is a bad game- only that it’s an uninventive one.

Once you look past that and resign yourself for another typical LEGO adventure, you realize that this game is, in many ways, perhaps the most polished LEGO game yet. Thanks to veteran developers Traveller’s Tales intelligently making use of their experience with this series, this game manages to stand out as perhaps the best realization of this well-worn formula yet. Though there’s no innovations or radical changes to look forward to, the game does offer a well-written, charming and incredibly enjoyable experience.

What’s most appealing about LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is the fact that no matter what level of familiarity you have with the Marvel lore and their history, you’re regularly going to find something that will grab your attention. From new fans of Marvel properties, thanks to the Cinematic Universe, to mid-tier enthusiasts who have a slightly deeper knowledge of their comic book characters as well, to full-blown aficionados, who are intricately familiar with even the most obscure Marvel publications, Marvel Super Heroes 2 packs in something for everyone to enjoy.

"What’s most appealing about LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is the fact that no matter what level of familiarity you have with the Marvel lore and their history, you’re regularly going to find something that will grab your attention."

Much of that is thanks to its narrative setup. This is a typically light-hearted story that is surprisingly coherent and can be quite amusing and interesting, and while a lot of that is thanks to the game’s excellent portrayal of large numbers of Marvel characters, most of it boils down to its setup. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 makes use of a lesser-known hero from the Marvel ethos- Kang the Conqueror, a villain who first fought against The Avengers in the 1960s. Though he isn’t as popular an antagonist as the likes of Thanos or Loki have become over the past few years, the game makes use of him perfectly. Like most other characters that have any significant screentime, Kang is smartly and sharply written and is very well voiced.

Kang the Conqueror has basically managed to rip a whole in space and time to build his own demented world, that of Chronopolis, which is basically of mixing pot of settings from all corners of Marvel lore. From Marvel Cinematic Universe locations such as Asgard and Xandar to Iron Fist’s K’un-Lun and Black Panther’s Wakanda, it’s all in there. But it goes beyond just that. While one area is like your regular midtown Manhattan, another area is based on Medieval England.

It’s almost like a virtual theme park. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 throws in all sorts of different Marvel worlds, stories, and characters, adds a dash of its own bizarre ideas, and brings it all together to create a world that is diverse and constantly entertaining. Every area has its own distinct flavour and personality, and making your way through each of these can be a lot of fun. What also helps is that there’s a lot of stuff to do as well, from hunting down collectibles to finishing side quests, a lot of which are quite well designed.

Make no mistake, this isn’t a massive or layered open world, the likes of which we see more in more in games such as Horizon: Zero Dawn or The Witcher 3. Marvel Super Heroes 2 is, after all, meant to be a highly accessible game, and while its world is full of variety and dense with plenty of things to do, don’t expect it to be the largest or even the most elaborate and complex open world setting you’ll ever see. What’s in there is all really good, but it’s all pretty basic, rudimentary stuff.

"LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 throws in all sorts of different Marvel worlds, stories, and characters, adds a dash of its own bizarre ideas, and brings it all together to create a world that is diverse and constantly entertaining."

Unfortunately, there were often times in my playthrough where, due to lack of adequate communication on the game’s part, I found myself at a loss for where to head next in the world. Since Chronopolis isn’t a huge enough setting for players to go lost in, I was able to proceed forward eventually, but such instances did still harm the game’s pacing. In fact, this issue is not just restricted to open world traversal- even during levels and set piece sequences, there are often times when LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 simply fails to communicate to the player just what it is it wants them to do. Again, none of these instances were too frustrating, and it didn’t usually take long to get past them, but they did ruin the momentum somewhat.

Level design itself, on the other hand, is quite solid. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 makes great use of Marvel locations, both obscure and well-known, and populates them with characters and references, also of both varieties. Every level has you playing as a pre-determined group of characters, combining light combat with environmental puzzles that involves using each character’s specific abilities based on different requirements. Unfortunately, it is in the combat the LEGO series shows some of its weaknesses once again.

These games are, after all is said and done, made with a young target audience in mind, and as such, they never try to be too complex or to be built intricate mechanics. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is a simple and straightforward game, with pick-up-and-play mechanics that people of all skills and ages would feel comfortable with. That’s a great thing, of course. The downside, though, is that the combat ends up feeling like nothing but aimless button mashing, with no skill involved. Of course, this isn’t a new complaint- it’s one that’s persisted with this series for as long as anyone can remember.

If the style of combat in LEGO games is something you’ve grown comfortable and content with, then this might not be much of an issue with you. But for players who’re looking for something that involves skill and progression, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 does nothing to change its series’ ways. Thankfully enough, the other major aspect of the moment-to-moment gameplay, which is solving environmental puzzles, is quite enjoyable. The puzzles are not really mind-benders, and they’re usually pretty rudimentary in nature, but figuring out which character’s ability you should use, and why you should use it, can often be a fun exercise. It becomes doubly enjoyable when you play the game co-operatively with a friend- in fact, while playing co-op, even combat becomes a little more fun.

"Unfortunately, it is in the combat the LEGO series shows some of its weaknesses once again."

The charm and colourful personality that characterizes all of Chronopolis is also something that is reflected in the visuals themselves. Technically, this game is no masterpiece, but the visual palette has a vibrant charm to it that is simply undeniable. More importantly, the simple fact that you get to see all your favourite Marvel characters, as well as the characters they inhabit, made entirely out of Lego blocks just adds a unique personality to them. That’s not to say you won’t notice any oddities or blemishes in the technical department- there are quite a lot of noticeable performance issues in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2. You’ll see quite a lot of jaggies, there will be plenty of frame rate drops, and you’ll often run into a number of glitches, some of which might even force you to restart your game to the previous checkpoint.

If you’ve been playing LEGO games for a while now and were expecting Marvel Super Heroes 2 to finally be the game that brings about a change in the formula, you’re going to be disappointed. This isn’t a new kind of LEGO game, and it wasn’t meant to be. Instead, it follows a tried and tested formula, and does so in a solid way. While issues with the sheer lack of challenge and requirement of skill exist, as well as some technical and performance issues, the game’s diverse theme park-like setting and its charming and silly humour are enough to make sure you have a great time.

After much controversy over its microtransactions, EA’s Star Wars Battlefront 2 still managed strong a debut in the UK as per the latest Chart-Track data. Physical sales for the game were enough to rank it at second in the charts though it still couldn’t overcome Call of Duty: WW2 which is now in first place for the third week in a row.

FIFA 18 has fallen to third place while Nintendo’s Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon saw strong debuts at fourth and fifth place respectively. Assassin’s Creed Origins fell from third to sixth place while The Sims 4 for Xbox One and PS4 debuted at seventh.

Rockstar’s LA Noire Remastered came in at eighth place followed by Super Mario Odyssey and another new debut LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 at tenth. As for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim VR, it managed to debut at nineteenth place. Chart-Track only looks at physical sales for games in the UK so expect all sales of the above to be higher when digital downloads are included.

Everything you need to know about the next big LEGO game.

If the continuous stream of Lego titles from TT Games hasn’t been enough for you, then Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 promises to add some meta-human fun to the mix. Releasing on November 14th, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is bigger than its predecessor but is it better? What exactly stands out, especially in this season of high profile releases? Let’s break down some of its major features before.

New Hub World

Time travel will be a pretty big thing in Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2. The new open world hub is Chronopolis, which is the main base for Kang and his elite commandos, the Anachronauts. The overall size has been described as twice that of Manhattan but it’s the locations that make Chronopolis so interesting.

Like many months before it, November will deliver excellent games across all kinds of platforms.

November is nearly here which means we’re coming to the end of a fantastic year of gaming. Each month has presented something special for all kinds of players and November is no different with 15 important releases to watch out for. Let’s take a look at all of them.

Call of Duty: WW2

It’s that time of the year again. You know, when a new Call of Duty releases and basks us in a year-long spree of microtransactions, balance changes, jokes about MLG, Doritos and Mountain Dew and DLC. However, at least this year’s Call of Duty: WW2 has the benefit of going back to a bygone era for the franchise. As the name implies, it takes place during World War 2 with a highly cinematic campaign that will encompass various theaters of the conflict. This also means that multiplayer will do away with the futuristic jetpacks and wall-running in favour of run and gun gameplay. There are some new features like a social space to meet other players, Divisions to enlist in and build different classes, the new War mode which presents a huge conflict in multiplayer for the first time and of course, a new Zombies campaign with Nazi Zombies returning. Will it help reinvigorate the franchise? We’ll find out when Call of Duty: WW2 releases on November 3rd for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
