Sony will be retiring the servers for LittleBigPlanet, LittleBigPlanet 2, LittleBigPlanet 3, LittleBigPlanet Portable, LittleBigPlanet Vita, and LittleBigPlanet Karting in Japan, permanently ending all online services and components for the franchise in the nation.

All servers will be taken offline on July 31, 2016- this means that after this date, you will no longer be able to play online, access online features, access community functionality, or upload your own stages. For some of these games, which are less than two years old – LittleBigPlanet 3 only launched on thew PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in 2014, for example.

Services for some games in the franchise will also be ending in the west- LittleBigPlanet Portable goes offline in the west on July 31, while LittleBigPlanet Karting sees its online services ending on August 31.

With this wide discontinuation of online services for games in the franchise, as well as with Media Molecule having moved on to other projects, like Dreams, and the relative failure of LittleBigPlanet 3, it appears as though this may be the end of the road for Sony’s original “play share create” franchise.

The winner will be flown to Sweden where they’ll spend one month working within  Tarsier and polishing their title for the LBP community.

Elliott Linger, Product Manager for LittleBigPlanet PlayStation Vita said: “We’ve had a great response to the internship opportunity and it’s been really fun seeing what LittleBigPlanet PlayStation Vita players have come up with for their minigames. We’re really excited to see who Tarsier selects as the ultimate winner.”

The final decision has been handed over to the team at Tarsier who will choose the overall winner. The winner will be selected on the basis of appeal and originality.

LittleBigPlanet for Playstation Vita has been updated to version v1.03 via an 85 MB patch. Obviously, that’s quite a weighty little addition, as it should be since it’s out to improve stability and provide additional support for other features. The patch also addresses a few bug within the game, and can be downloaded by heading to the LiveArea section of the game and hitting the Update icon.

Other features that the patch provides is cross-platform compatible DLC, additional downloadable costume support, unlocking previously locked levels and enabling the “Update All” function.

LittleBigPlanet Vita is going to be “bigger” than both the main installments of the franchise on the PS3, says Executive Producer Pete Smith.

“LittleBigPlanet [Vita] is bigger than LittleBigPlanet 1 and LittleBigPlanet 2,” Smith told NowGamer. “It’s got the full toolset from both games, it’s crazily big. And then we’ve got all of the sharing that you previously had, plus a whole set of new levels. That is gigantic on a handheld device. Smartphones can’t compete with that. They just can’t.”

They were originally about to make LBP Vita a cross platform game, released both on the Vita and PS3, thanks to the cross-play features between the two, but ultimately decided against it.

“At the start we thought long and hard about that, because initially we were thinking we could maybe port the game,” Smith said. “The more we started playing about with things, the more compromises we found we were going to have to make.

“What if you’re making a Vita version on PS3 and it’s got rear touch? How do you test that? What if I’ve created it on my Vita and it’s got front touch but it goes up on PS3? It’s not a port of the PS3 – LittleBigPlanet Vita is its own game.”
