New content incoming soon.

Loadout is a free-to-play multiplayer game which was developed by Edge of Reality for PlayStation 4 and Windows platform. The game has been available on the latter for over a year and was recently released on the PlayStation 4. GamingBolt recently caught up with Edge of Reality’s community manager Jason Heitman to know what the company’s future plans are for the free to play shooter.

Rashid Sayed: Loadout saw an amazing reception to its customization, billions of weapons and carnage-filled gameplay on the PC. What inspired you to make it free to play, especially with such a crowded market on the PC for the same?

Jason Heitman: We wanted to make a game that was true to the roots of those who spearheaded the project. Many of us come from the fledgling era of shooters and wanted to pay homage to that era in our own chaotic way. As cliché as that may sound, it came down to building something that stood out due to its art and gameplay. The Free-To-Play concept stems from the success the market was seeing at the time, in terms of F2P titles. There’s a long story behind what Loadout was going to be and what it is now, but we’d need a longer sit down for that –ha, ha.

Rashid Sayed: What inspired the numerous weapon combinations, along with the arcade-style gameplay?

Jason Heitman: Giving people creative freedom. We want people to play the way they want and enjoy their specific style. Now it comes with its caveats that create difficulty in balancing and building off the types of play style that populates our game but all-in-all the premise was for creativity. The arcade-shooter nature of Loadout fits more so than a military shooter or a sci-fi shooter (though we were in part inspired by science fiction).

"Due to manpower, we can’t accommodate both at the same time, so we move through phases on each platform. The goal is to get Phase One out on PS4 and catch PC up in one blow."

Rashid Sayed: How will you add on to the campaign mode, which acts as a Horde mode for four players, with the PS4 version?

Jason Heitman: We want it to be the “beginning” for new players, a place where they can learn the ropes and earn something special for their time. Our team is working on building a story that fits into the why and how of the Loadout universe. Regardless, the main objective is to build in a natural progression that revolves around a story that prepares you for Arena. That could include boss battles, special modes that allow for progression over a match and more. Just depends on what we’re able to pull off while balancing the feature set for Arena and other parts of the game.

Rashid Sayed: Will there be any new maps or modes for the PS4 version? What other issues in the original PC release have been addressed in the lead-up to the console release?

Jason Heitman: Yes! Phase One Update slated for February will showcase potentially three new maps! We have more on the way and will begin to share those as they become available. As for issues with PC release compared with PS4, they tend to be difficult games in some respect. We fortunately learned much from our early server issues from PC, which helped tighten the experience on PS4. That said, each platform presents its own brand of challenges and it’s up to us to continually find ways to get through them, rather than just around them. It’s a major learning experience either way.

Rashid Sayed: Will the PS4 version of Loadout have updates and patches around the same time as the PC version?

Jason Heitman: Due to manpower, we can’t accommodate both at the same time, so we move through phases on each platform. The goal is to get Phase One out on PS4 and catch PC up in one blow. From there, it’s possible the two platforms function as different experiences due to the desires of each community.

Rashid Sayed: Is there a specific reason why Loadout is a PS4 console exclusive with the absence of an Xbox One version?

Jason Heitman: Sony has been very kind to us and has provided us with every opportunity to succeed due to their embrace of Indies and most importantly F2P games. That’s not to say we won’t ever make our way to Xbox One but right now we’re happy with the opportunity Sony has provided us with the PlayStation 4 and want to provide as much as we can for that PS4 player base.

"You know, one of the best parts of being part of the PlayStation lineup is Sony is very calculated in what kind of title they incorporate into the F2P market. We’re all made to function successfully next to one another and effectively share the wealth."

Rashid Sayed: Many indie developers don’t appreciate Microsoft’s parity clause. What are your thoughts on the same?

Jason Heitman: I don’t really have any major thoughts on that parity clause. Whatever opportunity I’m presented, I’ll take it and run with it. I try not to worry about others decisions or judgments.

Rashid Sayed: The PS4 has had a very large influx of free to play titles in the past year since its launch. With games like PlanetSide 2 incoming, how will Loadout look to stand out at launch?

Jason Heitman: You know, one of the best parts of being part of the PlayStation lineup is Sony is very calculated in what kind of title they incorporate into the F2P market. We’re all made to function successfully next to one another and effectively share the wealth. We want Planetside 2 to be a success on PS4 because it only helps the rest of us in the F2P market. Plus, the guys at SOE are good folk.

Rashid Sayed: Is it safe to assume that Loadout will run at 1080p and 60fps on the PS4?

Jason Heitman: We couldn’t make this at launch but it is planned to be part of Phase One Update in February.

Rashid Sayed: Will Loadout on the PS4 support Remote Play on the PS Vita?

Jason Heitman: Yes it does! However there are some adjustments we need to make for it, as the default control scheme doesn’t exactly accommodate shooters.

Rashid Sayed: Will you be taking advantage of other unique features of the PS4 like the light bar or touchpad?

Jason Heitman: For now, the only thing the touchpad does is control the scoreboard. Maybe more in the future?

Edge of Reality’s free-to-play multiplayer third-person shooter Loadout will be soon receiving the 1080p and 60 frames per second treatment. This update is a part of Phase One which is planned to go live next month, Edge of Reality’s Jason Heitman confirmed to GamingBolt in a recent interview.

“We couldn’t make this at launch but it is planned to be part of Phase One Update in February,” he said to GamingBolt. We also asked whether the PS4 version of Loadout will receive updates and patches around the same time as the PC version. Unfortunately that won’t happen due to manpower issues but they plan to get it done eventually.

“Due to manpower [shortage], we can’t accommodate both at the same time, so we move through phases on each platform. The goal is to get Phase One out on PS4 and catch PC up in one blow. From there, it’s possible the two platforms function as different experiences due to the desires of each community.”

GamingBolt’s Oliver VanDervoort reviewed the PS4 version back in December last year and found Loadout to be a fun-filled game with tons of customization options. The game is now available on the PS4 and Xbox One.

A complete guide for Loadout.

Loadout is a free to play multiplayer third-person shooter developed by Edge of Reality. We have a complete guide for you that will focus on how you can earn and farm Experience Points (XP) and Blutes faster. We have also included ways to level up faster in the game, a complete guide for weapons, best builds/loadouts, customization, crafting and tips and tricks on movement and maneuvering in Loadout.

We also take a look at SpaceBux and healing without health packs. Loadout is now available for the PlayStation 4 and PC. If you have any questions, let us know in the comments section below.

Beginners Guide For Starter Weapons:

The very first thing you would want to do is to pick up the weapon of your choice from the weaponcrafting menu. You will be able to select from Rifle, Launcher, Pulse and Beam. All four weapon types are different from each and are equally impactful. Ultimately it boils down to your playing style so choose wisely.

If you want to totally dominate the competition, then your best bet is to opt for a Launcher + Rifle combination. Rifles can be used to aim at your enemy’s feet and the launcher is amazing for close quarters combat. Secondly, you can also opt for a Launcher + Pulse combination should you have a very good aim. The pulse projectiles are daunting and are hard to dodge.

If you are one of those players who don’t jump too often then Rifle + Pulse combination might work for you. The pulse can take out any incoming rockets fired at you. A possible second combination could be Rifle + Beam. The Beam can take out rockets more effectively.

If you are a team player then we suggest two combinations for you Healing Rockets + Any Other Gun or Healing Beam + Any Other Gun. The former will give you the advantage to sprint between reloads and you can heal multiple people using splash damage. The latter will give you a good range for healing and you will most likely use it in hammer game mode. However you can only heal one target at a time.

Evasive Maneuvering And Movements Guide:

It’s always best to move around as it will make it harder for your enemies to take proper aim and shoot you down. Always keep in mind that the game allows you to dive and roll which makes sure that your hitbox is shrinked. This will make it even harder to take you down.

The best way to survive in the game is to know the map properly, its pathways and jumps. This will go a long way in helping you clear mission objectives and take way less damage.

Levelling Up Faster, Earning Blutes, SpaceBux And Experience Farming:

Here are some quick tips that will help you to level up faster in Loadout. Try to buy an experience boost. It will double the amount of experience you get per game. This is by far the fastest way to level up in the game. However this will cost you real money. The other way is to use XP Boosts and Blute Boosts as this will help you to unlock almost of half of your tech tree very quickly.

The third way is to heal others a lot. The last method that we can suggest is a bit detailed but we have broken it down for you regardless. If you are aware, the bots would always pick up the vials. If you and your party get together in one location with choke point somewhere closer to the enemy spawn area, you will have access to vials of grenades and rockets. Using this method you can get a ton of killstreaks and its use can easily be helpful in situations where a player is on a turret with heals. This way you will be protected if you are being attacked.

It basically boils down to your playstyle and making sure you land up in the first two player slots after the match ends. It must also be added that Player Level and Weapon Level are different things and they get different experience points. The XP boost that you can buy from the store won’t affect your weapons at all.

Once you reach level 10 and start leveling up from there, the game will give you 4000 blutes, and after level 20 you get 10,000 blutes. The only way to earn SpaceBux is by spending real currency. Unfortunately, there is no other way to earn SpaceBux by playing the game.

Avatars, Taunts, Blute Boosts, more Weapons Slots and Loadouts can be bought via SpaceBux. Whereas weapons, their parts, equipment and upgrades can only be bought via Blutes.

Customization, Weaponcrafting, Best Guns Build/Loadout:

You simply cannot progress in Loadout if you are not well versed with weaponcrafting. The video above explains most of the details. The game provides with you a ton of customization options such as payloads, weapon dynamics and variables, triggers, barrels, stocks and more. You can create a weapon of any type with almost unlimited customization.

Below you will find some of the best guns you can build in Loadout.

Healing Yourself Without Health Packs:

You can check the entire explanation in the video above but in short, you can heal yourself without health packs or heal grenades. You need to go over a cheap and optimized build for ‘Mediboom’ which will allow you to heal yourself.

Trophy Guide:

All of these trophies can be unlocked using the guides above.

Level 5: Reach Level 5.
Level 10: Reach Level 10.

Customize, then kill everyone.

Over the top action never looked so good or so easily changeable. When I started up Loadout on my PS4 the very first time, my initial reaction was “where is the cut scene?” Where is the long opening cinematic that tells me what the point of this game is and what I’m going to have to do to accomplish my goals. After I realized such an opening wasn’t coming I realized this game wasn’t about laying out a complicated story with a myriad of different twists and turns all leading me to a glorious payoff rewarding me for my dedication.

What Loadout does is throw gamers into the action right off the bat and lets them figure out what the heck is going on, as they move down the mission list. There doesn’t appear to be a deep story here, at least not one that is known online. When the game is first booted up, players are greeted with some rather impressively cartoony graphics and a menu that allows you to literally jump into the fight within three minutes of picking up your controller.

"Taking on the appearance of a number of pre rendered characters, you and a team of three other players are tasked with taking out alien soldiers who are guarding various rally points."

Taking on the appearance of a number of pre rendered characters, you and a team of three other players are tasked with taking out alien soldiers who are guarding various rally points. The alien enemy ranges from the Peon (the easiest to kill) to the Grunt (harder to hurt), the Elite Grunt, the Grenadier and the Brawler. The farther players go up the chain of enemies the harder they are to kill and the more damage they do to the human combatants.

There is actually a chain of missions I played through, but almost all the missions seemed like a slightly different map with the same basic agenda. I and my team needed to shoot enough aliens in order to get to the rally point, then hold it for a bit and then head off to the next rally point. While the action, complete with bombs and bullets whizzing over my head was fun, it wasn’t enough to draw me into wanting to play the game for hours on end. 30 minutes at a time, then taking a little break and jumping back in is the way to play this game and when I did that, it turned out to be plenty enjoyable.

Loadout developers also got it right by going with two basic forms of gameplay. When I got tired of teaming up with people to take on aliens, I was able to get into the other multiplayer matches that actually put you on a team of four and set you at the throats of the other four. In this mode, there isn’t any kind of avoidance of dying. I died a ridiculous amount of times. The game seems to understand this, considering Loadout actually gave me a readout on the ratio of my kills versus the number of people I killed. This too, is fun in short bursts, and those who love this kind of multiplayer can find quite a bit of fun but it’s also not a feature that has enough maps or enough stated goals to have the kind of appeal that kept me wanting to play for hours on end.

"Never fear if you start to go broke, Loadout is set up to allow you to purchase more in-game currency with real world money. This is certainly a scheme we’ve seen before though I’ll admit, not being someone who ever spends money on in-game purchases in Free-to-Play games, Edge of Reality found a way to make it more attractive."

If the game stopped with the multiplayer functions, if this was the entirety of Loadout it would be the game developers would have a real problem on their hands. Thankfully, the battles are fun but figuring out how a player wants to go into battle is quite a bit more enjoyable. Loadout is called Loadout because the key feature of the game is players can customize one of four models of guns, as well as decide whether they want their characters to go to war carrying a couple of different kinds of grenades, health packs or other tools like Jump Boots.

This is also where the Free-to-Play game makes Edge of Reality their money. When starting the game, you get a certain amount of coin currency that will allow you to put different kinds of scopes, barrels, gun stocks and ammo cartridges onto a machine gun/rifle hybrid, a sort of grenade launcher, a laser gun or a gun that shoots spiky metal balls. Each change to these weapons costs a certain amount of money and you can blow through what you’ve been given to start the game rather quickly.

Never fear if you start to go broke, Loadout is set up to allow you to purchase more in-game currency with real world money. This is certainly a scheme we’ve seen before though I’ll admit, not being someone who ever spends money on in-game purchases in Free-to-Play games, Edge of Reality found a way to make it more attractive. One of the best parts of Loadout is that once you have decided on a kind upgrade for your gun you can go out on the testing range before purchase and see how it works.

"Loadout is over the top in a number of different ways and Edge of Reality didn’t skimp on the gruesome, cartoony details when it came to showing what a gatling gun can do to the human body."

The testing range serves as a kind of endless shooter mini-game which had me hooked long enough that I suddenly realized I had spent 15 minutes just shooting various characters who were doing nothing more than standing there and taunting me while I shot off their limbs and exposed their brains. Yeah, another great feature of this game that made it so popular on the PC was ported over expertly to the PS4 version.

Loadout is over the top in a number of different ways and Edge of Reality didn’t skimp on the gruesome, cartoony details when it came to showing what a gatling gun can do to the human body. Shoot a character enough times in the right spot and you will suddenly be looking at their innards as they come spilling out. Shoot them in the leg long enough and you will actually shave away skin, exposing a bloody shin bone. Bit your target in the head enough times and all that will be left will be some grey matter and a couple of eyeballs. Despite losing various extremities, your victims will still be able to show you how little they care about you by flipping the bird while you finish them off.

The variations of guns Loadout offers are not limitless but there are enough choices that you might want to also spend some of your hard earned cash buying extra slots so you can save a variety of different weapons. Players can also purchase extra loadout slots and if you make more than two guns you are going to want to extra loadout slots because a gun can only be assigned to one loadout slot at a time. I should point out that not everything you need to buy in the game has to be purchased using real money. There is a way to earn SpaceBux in the game, though you can’t use the earned SpaceBux for everything.

"If it seems like I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time talking about everything you can customize, that is because the game is good because of that customization."

The final bit of customization comes in the form of the playable characters. Loadout offers up a few pre-made characters and then gives the option of building around those models in order to look different from everyone else playing the game. The choices for facial features and clothes is plentiful and if you’re willing to spend a pretty penny on upgrades you can give your character a truly crazy look.

If it seems like I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time talking about everything you can customize, that is because the game is good because of that customization. Whether playing the four player team-up against aliens, or the four player team-up against another team of four players, the gameplay itself doesn’t bring anything we haven’t seen before. What it does do is bring quite a bit of things we’ve seen before and put a new spin on them that makes Loadout playable over and over again.

Billions of ways to kill players.

What is Loadout, you ask? it’s a free to play shooter that is coming exclusively to the PS4 (well, at least as far as consoles are concerned) that apparently offers players billions of ways to shoot each other, thanks to a never ending stream of weapon parts and combos.

The game, which is being developed by Edge of Reality, doesn’t yet have an official launch date on the PS4, but the developers seem to be pretty excited about the prospect of bringing it to the console and further expanding the 3 million plus playerbase the game currently enjoys.

“Loadout is a game that lets you concoct the weapon of your dreams and/or nightmares from hundreds of component parts, and share their payloads with your friends in fast-paced matches, with violently comedic results,” they said on the PlayStation Blog. “Giant death beam? We’ve got it covered. Bouncy Tesla balls? Sure. Laser-guided cluster-bomb rockets? Hey, we’re not here to judge. Loadout has literally billions of different weapon combinations, and you can wield every last one of them once we launch on PS4. We’re going to be adjusting all the scopes and balancing the barrels so your weapons of choice feel right at home on DualShock 4.

“Putting a visually unique game like Loadout on PS4 is a treat for us. The sprawling levels and bombastic characters look as glorious and murderable as ever! When you shoot someone in Loadout, you know it and they know it: limbs and heads sever, gaping holes display the delightfully shiny organs within, and flesh burns to a well-done crisp. The lavish animation and art will be right at home on PS4.”

We might have more information for you on this game at E3, so stay tuned.

Over 9 million hours logged since launch.

Edge of Reality’s Loadout has become incredibly popular since launching, with more than two million users having signed up for the game in the past two weeks. This is in part due to the weapons system which, much like Borderlands, lets you have tens of billions of weapon variations thanks to the crafting system.

Players have thus far logged more than 9 million hours in the game, which is free to play. As Edge of Reality CEO Rob Cohen notes, “The incredible surge of interest at launch shattered all our expectations, and it unfortunately just became too much for our servers to handle in the beginning.

“Very few Steam titles have reached the peak concurrent users we achieved upon release. We’re committed to delivering an excellent game to our community, and we continue to work hard to ensure that our servers provide all our players with the same fluid, responsive, and enjoyable experience across the board.”

Have you tried Loadout yet? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
