Paid online gaming will help control some of the losses, rumoured to be $60 per unit.

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 would be sold at a loss with sources for Eurogamer stating that it could be as much as $60 dollars for each console, which retails for $399. However, Sony Japan executive Masayasu Ito stated the company is looking to recover on those losses via paid subscriptions for PlayStation Plus, which is now required for playing online, and with its launch titles.

Ito denied the accuracy of $60 loss figure. He also neglected to mention how many launch titles would be helping to control the loss, but stated that the console will be making a profit faster than the PlayStation 3 did (which took several years after launch to finally see some semblance of profit).

Nonetheless, if the figure is accurate, will a PlayStation Plus subscription be enough to help control it? That depends on how many people would be willing to pay for online gaming, but considering the state of Xbox Live, it should be fine. The PS4 launches on November 15th in North America and on November 29th in Europe.

The dark days continue for Nintendo.

When Nintendo released its annual financial report, it stated that the company saw an operating loss of 36.4 billion yen ($387 million) and cited hardware sales as being a major factor. This essentially means that the Wii U continues to be sold at a loss. The same was confirmed by a representative for the company to Games Industry International.

The Nintendo Wii U launched in November 2012, and president Satoru Iwata stated that each unit would be sold as a loss. Despite being downplayed since then, the loss is becoming more and more pronounced, as if Nintendo only selling 160,000 units in the last three months ending June 30th wasn’t bad enough as is.

A price drop on the Wii U looks unlikely at this point. The console currently retails for $250, with the deluxe set retailing for $300. Analysts predict that the upcoming holiday season – with games like Wind Waker HD releasing before it – will be critical for Nintendo to mount a comeback for the Wii U.
