Avalanche 2 and Blood of the Werewolf get new screenshots.

Majesco Entertainment has created a new indie label in the form of Midnight City, and will release two new indie games to celebrate. These include Beast Game’s Avalanche 2: Super Avalanche, which is set to optimized for Steam in late Q1 2014, and Blood of the Werewolf which will arrive on Xbox 360 and on the PlayStation Network in Q2 2014.

Avalanche 2: Super Avalanche will see players take on the role of a bouncy marshmallow creatures who moves upwards past procedurally generated items and blocks. Why? Well, we’re not sure but there will be 70,000 combinations of power-ups for the marshmallow to take advantage of.

That means jumping higher, running faster and other skills like double jump. There will also be randomly generated bosses which will vary depending on the platform you pick the game up on. Though we know it will be arriving on Xbox 360, a PSN release indicates that it could be on PS Vita and/or PS3/PS4 as well.

Blood of the Werewolf, which already released on Steam for PC this past Halloween, is heading to consoles. New console versions means new content such as “Endless Challenge” which sees you fighting increasingly difficult waves of enemies with limited continues.

You’ll be able to compete with other players worldwide on the leaderboards depending on your success. Meanwhile, the single player sees Selena, a werewolf, who is looking to rescue her son from Victor Frankenstein through 10 levels. Other creatures making an appearance include The Mummy, Jekyll & Hyde and Dracula.

Both games are platformers in their own ways and feature their own snazzy styles. A set of new screenshots has been released for both games, which you can check out below. What are your thoughts on both these games and will you be interested in picking them up on release? Let us know in the comments.

Get in, get out, get rich.

Monaco is a special game. Walking into this review, hearing the hype spreading out across the interwebz, be it through Penny Arcade’s experiences and comics or simply from the over-whelming critical and commercial acclaim, it would seemingly create high expectations. However, Monaco isn’t amazing for just what it does – which it does excellently, mind you – but how it takes the gameplay elements we’ve seen for years and creates a completely new and enjoyable experience.

The premise is simple: You play as a thief, of which eight different types exist in the game, and execute heists. These heists are throwbacks to old-school movies, and feature their own homages to the same (ably aided by the high rolling 50’s style soundtrack).

You’ll be working through 30 different missions in single-player and committing acts like robbing banks, busting out accomplices and much more. The storyline is deftly handled, relying on a neo-noir presentation and smooth characterizations for each of the thieves.

On its own, the gameplay allows you to sneak around and utilize different abilities to complete your objectives. Four thieves are playable from the outset, including the Locksmith, Pickpocket, Cleaner and Lookout. Each character’s ability is obvious from the outset, as the Locksmith can pick different locks and the Cleaner is skilled at knocking out enemies.

It’s the unlockable characters which provide some interesting alternatives with the Gentleman being an expert in camouflage and the Redhead can charm different enemies into unlocking doors and providing meaningful distractions (besides reviving other team members). It all makes for an awesome single-player experience when you’re just romping through a level and using these different abilities to complete missions in previously undiscovered ways.

The ingenuity extends to the game’s line of sight. Unlike most other top down games, your line of sight mirrors the characters. Your character won’t be able to see what’s beyond a locked door. It creates an awesome sense of suspense, and while hard to adjust to, it also applies to enemies. Duck out of their line of sight, and you’ll never have to worry about them seeing you. The Lookout helps add an extra dimension to this in that she’s the only character type that can see NPCs in a level.

So as a single-player game, Monaco is tons of fun. It’s when you go online and compete alongside three different players (or just cooperate locally on your TV screen) that things get crazier, for the better.

The different character types must all somehow work together to execute plans, coordinating their various abilities to succeed. However, plans can go awry, which results in every one just winging it and doing their thing to quickly succeed.

There’s a measure of competitiveness as well in trying to beat your friends out and attain a higher score, even though missions are one based on cooperative play. This is especially so when going up against tougher enemies armed with weapons like shotguns that can kill you in an instant.

Nonetheless, it’s a blast to play. The game’s minimalist art style and shadowy environments contrast excellently with neon lights and the colour coded characters. The animations of each thief are unique and helps imbue tons more personality than entire scripts can do for some characters in most AAA titles. But it helps that they have great dialogue in the single-player as well.

As an indie title that encompasses the essentials of classic arcade titles in a new wave co-operative approach that also redefines how top-down games are played, Monaco is an excellent title. It comes highly recommended, and its small niggles do nothing to detract from the amazing aura that pulling off a master heist – chaotically or coherently – provide.

This game was reviewed on PC.

This will allow Pocketwatch Games to pay back investment from Indie Fund.

The latest indie game phenomenon Monaco: What’s Yours is Mine has gotten a great response thus far from critics and audiences worldwide – so good in fact that it has been able to pay back the initial investment of $100,000 provided by Indie Fund.

Pocketwatch Games developer Andy Schatz stated on Twitter, “Man our direct sales have been crazy good with all this press. After Steam/Humble fees we’ve grossed $120,000 since December 10. Have to pay back $100K loan from Indie Fund first.”

Considering the game hasn’t even released yet, this is nothing but good news.

Monaco was available for pre-order on the Humble Store in December with Steam pre-orders staring on April 17. Within only three days of its Steam pre-orders, the game garnered $120,000. The official launch date was April 24th.

Monaco is essentially a cooperative heist game that takes place from a top-down view, wherein players will be able to choose specialized thief characters to complete different puzzles.

Risk-adverse bets.

In a recent quarterly earnings call, Majesco CEO Jesse Sutton, has said that his company will take risk-adverse bets in preparation for the industry transition to next gen consoles.

“We’re in an interesting position now … which is [that] the industry is going through this transition,” he said.

“Majesco is going to try to be opportunistic, sit back a little and watch what the new platforms do, take what we’ll call ‘risk-averse bets’ on the kinds of brands and products that we bring to those platforms — if and when we do — and look at other opportunities in other areas that can create value as well.”

He also talked a bit about the PS4 and how it opens up opportunities on the PS3 as well.

“What that does is primarily allow the previous generation platforms — as we’ve seen with the PlayStation 2 to the PlayStation 3 — to overlap and create a market dynamic that really builds the mass-market interest in those platforms as pricing comes down and those platforms become more attractive.

“We’re looking forward to taking advantage of those dynamics as well as keeping a close eye on where we can play in the new platforms.”

He was also optimistic about the Wii U and Nintendo’s ability to bounce back after the slow start.

“It is always the game that drives the hardware sales, and as they position their fall lineup of 2013, we think that there’s a good probability that they can generate some traction and build off of their fantastic brand base that they’ve always had.”

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Thanks, Polygon.

Have some acid-washed retro 80's art in your classic brawler.

Billy and Jimmy, if you haven’t heard, have returned and they are apparently “more radical than ever”. Oddly, despite having to save “their shared love interest Marian”, they do go up against a dude named Skullmageddeon in Majesco Entertainment’s Double Dragon Neon.

The retooled 2D beat-em-up is now available on PlayStation Network for PS3 and Xbox Live Arcade for XBox 360.

WayForward wants to put a “radical new art direction pulled directly from the 1980s, in an acid-washed, electrical, over-the-top celebration of that decade’s aesthetics” to Double Dragon Neon – which is good. Now whether people actually like it is a different issue. How well it puts across the classic Double Dragon gameplay rather than overshadowing it is up for debate.

You can pick up Double Dragon Neon on PSN for €7/$9.99 and on Xbox live Arcade for 800 Microsoft Points. And if you’re one of those Playstation Plus people, you can play the game for free from now until January (lucky you).

In this case, drugs were involved, yes.

Billy and Jimmy are back, and they are…pinker. Wayforward and Majesco Entertainment have updated the classic franchise for Double Dragon: Neon and put a powerful acid-tripped, retro, 1980’s art style into effect.

The same beat-em-up style seems in effect, but the game really looks…like something. At least people get beaten up realistically enough, for a Double Dragon game that is.

Double Dragon: Neon is available on PlayStation Network for $9.99 and on Xbox LIVE Arcade for 800 Microsoft Points.

Of course, if you go the Playstation Plus route, you can play Double Dragon: Neion free throughout January.
