From sequels seeking redemption to new concepts for established franchises, these games were way better than they had any right to be.

If it wasn’t obvious, making a video game isn’t easy. Along with creating a strong concept and design, you need to hire artists and programmers, budget everything accordingly, manage production cycles, squash bugs, coordinate teams and much more over years. Whether an indie or big-budget game, it’s hard to predict how some games will turn out.

However, there are games which turn out even better than expected. Even if they looked good, the final result is something truly special. Here are 15 games that are way better than they initially had any right to be.

Inside

Coming off the success of Limbo, Playdead Games began work on Inside, a spiritual successor of sorts. Many praised the former for its presentation and gameplay in 2010. However, despite starting development on Inside two months later, it was a long journey for the studio. Revealed in 2014, it faced some delays, which wasn’t enough to create overwhelming concern. At the time, many expected Inside to be good, but not that good.

And it was more than good on release in 2016. Earning near-universal praise from critics, its dark mood and storytelling were arguably superior to Limbo. The short length also exemplified how a video game could deliver pitch-perfect pacing with compelling puzzles and mechanics, on top of an incredible plot that didn’t hold the player’s hand.

Several years later, Inside is remembered even more fondly than Limbo, transcending its indie identity to become one of the best games ever made.

A notable leaker has suggested that a new Mario + Rabbids game is in development at Ubisoft, set to release as a Switch exclusive.

With E3 2021 right around the corner, leaks just don’t seem to stop coming. Reddit user PracticalBrush12 claims that a new Mario + Rabbids game is in development at Ubisoft, titled Mario + Rabbids Spark of Hope, and will be announced at its Forward event on June 12th as a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

PracticalBrush12 has a strong track record with his leaks and predictions, with many of his previous reports ultimately turning out to be true, including leaks for the likes of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Diablo 2: Resurrected, Monster Hunter Rise, and more There’s also the fact that the developer in question is Ubisoft, which also has a track record of having its surprises leaked beforehand what seems to be every single time.

Not a lot of other details on the matter are known so far, but thankfully fans don’t have to wait much longer to find out. With highly anticipated titles like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, Skull and Bones, as well Beyond Good and Evil 2 almost confirmed to absent from the event, there’s a great chance that fans will be getting an extensive look at this new Nintendo Switch exclusive.

Ubisoft says its catalog on the Switch "continues to be a strong driver of profitability."

Ubisoft have been one of the Switch’s biggest third party supporters ever since the hybrid platform first launched. With games like Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Starlink: Battle for Atlas (though that didn’t sell as well as Ubisoft had expected), and, of course, numerous Just Dance titles, Ubisoft’s output on the Switch has been sizeable.

Apparently, it’s also been very profitable for them. Speaking during the company’s recent earnings call, Ubisoft’s chief financial officer Frederick Duguet said that the publisher is “reaping the benefits” of the Switch’s huge success, and that it’s many games available on the platform have been major drivers for revenue and profits for the company.

“We’re also reaping the benefits of the Switch’s huge success and our position as leading third-party publisher on the platform thanks to, among others, our Just Dance games and Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle,” said Duguet (via VentureBeat). “The depth and breadth of our catalog, which goes beyond the brands mentioned, provides us with ever-greater visibility and continues to be a strong driver of profitability.”

Currently, with the exception of the upcoming Roller Champions, Ubisoft don’t have any major releases planned for the Nintendo Switch- or, at least, none that have been officiall confirmed. Though they haven’t confirmed a Switch launch for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, there have been multiple listings pointing to one.
