Ubisoft had announced that they would be releasing Donkey Kong DLC for their surprise crossover hit from last year, Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. Now, with Spring gradually approaching its end (it is supposed to launch some time in Spring), they have finally shared some further information on the DLC by way of two new videos.

The first video is a gameplay trailer, while the second one is a video showing off gameplay details for the new expansion. We still don’t have actual release details, but it’s good to see that the game will be doing Nintendo’s resident primate proper justice (not that that was something we should have been worried about after how phenomenal Kingdom Battle turned out to be).

You can check out the videos for yourself below, and whet your hype for the expansion, which can’t be too far out now. Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is out and available now exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.

Ubisoft has more Switch games brewing.

We already know that third parties are finally finding a welcoming and accepting audience to hawk their wares to on a Nintendo platform with the Nintendo Switch, and it seems that Ubisoft is no different on that count. In fact, their primary Switch showing, the excellent strategy game Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, apparently was the highest selling third party Switch game in 2017.

Ubisoft noted that the game is continuing its success this year, too, with a successful launch in Japan this year, where it has shown surprisingly resilient legs. Ubisoft confirmed that its other Switch games, such as Just Dance, did very well, too.

They also confirmed that they are looking to grow their relationship with Nintendo, promising that more games for the Switch would come- though declining to comment on exactly what they might be either way. Hopefully, their future Switch efforts are as inspired and high quality as Kingdom Battle was.

Includes local co-op, online co-op, as well as online competitive matches.

Gaming has its roots in players playing against each other in arcades, whether by directly facing off, or just trying to beat each other’s high scores. So of course, multiplayer is a hugely integral component of video games. 2017 saw a great amount of fantastic multiplayer games- and yet, one stood out over all others… Let’s look at them.

NOMINEES

Destiny 2:

Destiny 2 takes all that was great about the original game, while also fixing up its flaws, to deliver one of the standout multiplayer experiences of the year. Yes, there are problems- once again, the end game is lacking, and there are balance problems that need fixing. But Bungie has shown us previously that they know how to maintain a community over the long term- and with Destiny 2, there’s a strong foundation laid down already.

Cuphead:

This brutally difficult, incredibly stylized and charming 2D action platformer allows you to make things a bit easier for yourself by bringing a friend along in local co-op to take on its formidable stages and bosses. Sorry, did I say easier? Like with any co-op game, the shenanigans make it harder if anything. And that’s the beauty and fun of it- working together, in spite of the urge to work against each other, to conquer a game that is truly difficult, delivers one of the standout multiplayer experiences of 2017.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands:

GTA with friends- not GTA Online, actual GTA. That’s the pitch of Ghost Recon Wildlands, and, hey, it works! What is a middling and average open world action game is elevated into becoming hugely fun and memorable when played with friends- and throw in Ubisoft’s great support for the multiplayer, for example with the recently added PvP, and you can see why this game has taken on a life of its own.

ARMS:

Fighting games are always great- ARMS stands out because of how unique it is. The game almost plays like Smash Bros. in 3D, with an emphasis on movement and mobility options, but the exceptionally full featured suite of multiplayer options within it, as well as support for motion controls, further makes it a hugely inviting pick up and play multiplayer game that we can’t get enough of.

Fortnite:

Epic’s newest game launched in early access, and while it stood out right away after launch, it was only when it gained its PUBG inspired battle royale mode that it gained notoriety. Fortnite is hugely fun to play, no matter what mode you pick- and with Epic’s excellent community engagement and post launch support, it is bound to get even better over time.

PUBG:

Speaking of PUBG- PUBG. Has any other game in 2017 been as much of a sensation, or captured as much of the zeitgeist, as PUBG did? It’s such a simple concept- 100 players on an island, and the area of play keeps contracting. You’re defenceless at first, and must scramble to find something to survive with. If you die, you die. And yet, it is so infinitely variable and thrilling and entertaining, that it has spawned an entire genre in its wake.

For Honor:

For Honor is another one of those games that is so unique, it stand out. Melding imaginative close range melee combat with large scale PvP like in a modern shooter, with an excellent meta game layered on top, For Honor wins points for sheer uniqueness. And while it had issues at launch, Ubisoft has since managed to iron out a lot of them, and continues to work on the remaining ones.

Call of Duty: WW2:

The Call of Duty series struck back this year with Call of Duty: WW2, the game that took the franchise back to its roots with a new game set in the Second World War. delivering an exciting and thrilling campaign was all well and good- but getting to play classic boots on the ground Call of Duty, with none of the over the top science fiction weapons and perks that had begun to pervade the series in recent years, reminded us all why we fell in love with the franchise to begin with.

Halo Wars 2:

Real time strategy games should flat out not work on consoles, but The Creative Assembly made it happen with Halo Wars 2, that took Bungie’s flawed original effort, and elevated it beyond what we might have imagined. The true quality of Halo Wars 2 shone in its multiplayer mode- and playing a multiplayer RTS on console was a surreal experience for sure.

Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle:

Yes, this had multiplayer! Originally just co-op, with more modes added over time, there is a delightful fun to be had playing the simplified chess that Mario+Rabbids presents you with- and the multiplayer, yet again, highlights the Switch’s strengths in the local multiplayer experiences that it, and it alone of all the hardware on the market, seems to so squarely emphasize.

WINNER:

Cuphead

Bet you didn’t see that one coming, did you? There is something about Cuphead- take the feeling you get when you overcome a hugely insurmountable challenge, or when you beat a very hard boss- but now, take that feeling, double it, and share it with your friend, who is sharing it right back with you. Cuphead gets to the spirit of cooperation in multiplayer that so many modern games have lost sight of. In a year when so many other games are about trying to be better than the other player, Cuphead is content to let you revel in simply working with your friend in taking down yet another formidable foe. That is truly admirable.

Honoring the best game on the Nintendo Switch.

There has never been a system that managed to have a first year as legendary, and as jam packed with must-have games, as the Nintendo Switch in 2017. It’s almost like Nintendo let out five years of pent up frustration from the Wii U and Wii, to deliver a truly astounding arsenal of fantastic games on a monthly basis. The Switch is nine months old, and it already has an exceptional library of games to pick from. Choosing just one best one was hard- but we did it…

NOMINEES

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild:

The Switch started its life with the killer-app of a lifetime, as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild reinvented the beloved action adventure franchise for a new age, while also simultaneously elevating the open world genre, and what we can expect from it going forward. From its incredible, vast scope to the sheer levels of interactivity the game offered, Breath of the Wild stunned everyone, rendering them speechless, as for the first time in 20 years, we felt truly lost in a limitless world of a video game, where anything truly seemed to be – and almost always, was – truly infinite.

Super Mario Odyssey:

The other major pillar that propped up the Nintendo Switch in 2017 was Super Mario Odyssey, which saw Nintendo’s mascot return to his sandbox 3D platforming roots. Joyously inventive and imaginative, whimsically fun, and just pure fun, Super Mario Odyssey became a game that it is impossible to play without a smile on your face, and a game that fired the imaginations of millions of players around the world.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe:

In the Switch’s early days, there were two games you could assume everyone owned- Breath of the Wild, and Mario Kat 8 Deluxe. Mario Kart may have been a port of a Wii U game, but more than anything, it exemplified what the Switch truly was. Lending itself to shorter sessions of play as much as longer ones, and acting as an incredible demo for the Switch’s spontaneous local multiplayer capabilities, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also, quite possibly, a modern multiplayer classic, and one of the best games Nintendo has ever made.

Splatoon 2:

Betraying expectations by releasing not a Splatoon remaster for the Switch, but a full sequel, Nintendo delivered the newest game in their hot new IP with Splatoon 2. And, sure, it is disappointingly safe, and in many regards, retreads a lot of the same ground, mistakes and all, as its predecessor- but Nintendo’s exceptional post launch support for it, as well as jut how fundamentally fun its core gameplay loop is, means that, warts and all, Splatoon 2 rises above its failings to deliver one of the best experiences of the year.

Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle:

Earlier this year, Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle leaked with some concept art and screenshots- and everyone hated what they saw. How could Nintendo and Ubisoft do such a thing? What was this game? How was Nintendo comfortable treating Mario so cavalierly? And then, we saw the game when it was officially revealed at E3. And then we got to play it. Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle turned out to be an incredible game- a deft mix of Mario motifs with turn based strategy elements, to deliver an addictive and compelling game that, in a year as strong as 2017, especially for the Switch, manages to stand out.

ARMS:

Nintendo’s newest IP turned out to be a fighting game from the makers of Mario Kart- and it turned out to be every bit as wacky as you would expect. A 3D arena fighter, ARMS stands out because of its core gimmick of its characters having extendible arms- which ties neatly into the game’s central mechanic of you curving and swerving them to add another layer of movement to your character’s in combat. It somehow worked, though there were growing pains- but it will be interesting to see where Nintendo takes this burgeoning franchise in the future.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2:

Monolith Soft has already established itself as one of the masters of the JRPG genre, and with Xenoblade Chronicles 2, they were in top form. Delivering a stunning world, unparalleled in its imagination, scope, or beauty, with a philosophically profound and touching story, and an inventive combat system, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is one of the best RPGs of the year, and one of the standout titles in the Switch’s maiden nine months.

Skyrim:

Skyrim needs no introduction. It’s Skyrim- an utterly fantastic game that set the course for the entire industry to follow in the years to com. Six years after launch, it remains as compelling as it ever was- and now, the ability to play it truly anywhere makes its addictive gameplay that much more potent, and uniquely married to what the Nintendo Switch really is.

DOOM:

The fact that DOOM runs on the Switch at all is a marvel- and yet, here we are. Yes, there were many compromises and concessions along the way, but the end experience is unmistakably DOOM. The fast paced 2016 shooter makes it more or less intact on to Nintendo’s system, and, just as it did last year when it first released, stood out due to how incredibly good it was when it did.

Pokken Tournament DX:

One of the sad casualties of the Wii U’s early death was Pokken Tournament DX, the excellent Pokemon based 3D fighting game that launched last year- and this year, Nintendo put it out on the Switch, too. With added fighters and modes, and support for the Switch’s spontaneous local multiplayer, Pokken is one of those games that truly exemplifies what Nintendo’s new console is really about.

Winner:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Go back to what we said about Breath of the Wild- it felt truly infinite. No game before has managed to capture the spirit of adventure and imagination as well as Breath of the Wild did. One of the rare games that is as proactive towards the player as it is reactive, Breath of the Wild is a monumental achievement that managed to elevate what we thought was possible in games, while also more or less perfecting it along the way. It is truly impossible to know where Nintendo will take the Zelda series next- but for the first time in years, they have everyone’s attention on them.

Ubisoft will be adding a competitive multiplayer mode to their surprise hit crossover strategy game Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle tomorrow in a brand new free update, they announced today. Versus mode will take the game’s mechanics, and test their mastery of them.

Players’ actions per turn will be limited, unlike in the PvE modes- but the maps will be littered with boxes containing tickets that allow for additional actions per turn, making them act, no doubt, as control points for games. You will also have to pick from premade loadouts for yourself.

The mode will be playable locally- for now, there is no online support, much like with the co-op modes, though who knows if online functionality will be added later? But for those of you who enjoyed playing Kingdom Battle with friends, now there’s an additional mode for you to try out- check out a video for it below. Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is a very, very pleasant surprise.

Nothing about Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle made sense when we first heard about it. It felt like a cashgrab that was trying to play both sides at once, a mixture that just wouldn’t set well and would probably feel very jarring- and given the different natures of the two franchises in question here, you wouldn’t be blamed for having been skeptical too. But the second you jump into this bizarre and beautiful journey, all your doubts get washed away. Mario + Rabbids is very, very good, more than it has any right or reason to be, and I for one am glad about how wrong I was in my initial assessment of the game’s concept.

What’s most notable about Kingdom Battle is that despite being a crossover of the Mario and Raving Rabbids franchises, the core of its gameplay doesn’t borrow much from any of the two properties. Mario + Rabbids is a turn based tactical RPG, and for people who’ve become familiar with this kind of gameplay in recent releases like XCOM (or, to an extent, even Fire Emblem), you’re going to feel right at home here. Mario + Rabbids employs a similar kind of grid based tactical combat system, but credit must be given to the game for not just trying to rip off the formula, but putting its own unique spin on it.

Battles in Kingdom Battle are an all around solid and thoroughly enjoyable affair. While not as layered or as long-drawn or even as unforgiving as some of its competitors in the genre, you’ll find that the game manages to always keep things fresh by constantly bringing in new elements and gameplay mechanics throughout the course of the game. Varied enemy designs, each of whom have their own unique sets of abilities and weaknesses, along with excellent map design that challenges you to use the environment to your advantage as much as you would your own weapons, also go a long way in working towards that goal.

"Mario + Rabbids is very, very good, more than it has any right or reason to be, and I for one am glad about how wrong I was in my initial assessment of the game’s concept."

Positioning is quite important during battles in Kingdom Battle for a number of reasons, besides the aforementioned environmental concerns. Sticking behind cover and making sure you keep your characters well defended is often crucial, while being able to plan ahead and make sure that you use all your characters’ abilities at the right time and for the right purpose can also make or break the flow of a battle. For instance, propelling one of your characters off of one of their teammates to launch them to another section of the battlefield can give you an advantage in terms of something like, say, the higher ground, but it also means that that character is going to be isolated and more vulnerable for at least a short period of time.

You always have to keep all these things in mind, while also making sure you stay one step ahead of all that the game throws at you in terms of enemy design, map design and environmental hazards (or advantages, depending on how you use them). Kingdom Battle does a good job of mixing up the objectives of battles, so that you’re never doing too much of the same thing one after another. Not only does this help keep the game fresh, it also makes sure that the game remains challenging, but never so much so that it becomes unfair.

Outside of battle, Mario + Rabbids is as surprisingly good as the rest of it is. No, do not expect a full fledged platformer or even an open world exploration based game- gameplay outside of battles is rudimentary and simple, with its purpose being, for the most part, to guide players from one battle to another. But the developers have still done a good job of making sure those sections aren’t just there for the sake of it. From collecting coins and finding pathways into hidden areas to solving puzzles or traversing across varied environments and landscapes, Mario + Rabbids manages to keep things fresh and without any sense of monotony or boredom. You never feel like you’re just going through the paces, and while the battles are still very much the star of the show, a decent amount of fun can often be had even outside of them.

"From collecting coins and finding pathways into hidden areas to solving puzzles or traversing across varied environments and landscapes, Mario + Rabbids manages to keep things fresh and without any sense of monotony or boredom. You never feel like you’re just going through the paces, and while the battles are still very much the star of the show, a decent amount of fun can often be had even outside of them."

Whether its battles or the areas outside of them, Mario + Rabbids constantly keeps throwing new things and elements into the mix. The game starts off simple and easy, introducing you to deceptively simple mechanics and concepts, but little by little, these keep growing in complexity. And the game paces this escalation almost to perfection, always keeping you on your toes, never letting you get bored, never letting monotony set in, and always keeping you excited about seeing how the game is going to surprise you next. Thankfully, the game provides players with enough tools at their disposal to be able to tackle such increasingly complex issues with panache. Levelling up and upgrading your characters and their equipment is, for the most part, done on a very basic level, but there is a skill tree here, and you can, to a limited extent, customize your characters within some bounds.

On the presentation department, Kingdom Battle is as unexpectedly good as it is in terms of its moment-to-moment gameplay. The game is absolutely stunning when it comes to the visuals. From beautifully detailed environments to fluid animations and charming, emotive character models, everything in Mario + Rabbids looks top notch. Technically sharp and crispy textures come together with gorgeous, colourful art style to make for a game and a world that blend the universes of Mario and Raving Rabbids with great aplomb.

Every nook and cranny has its own unique level of charm and personality, all the characters and enemy units and bosses and mini-bosses (both of which are excellently designed, both in terms of combat and how they look) have their own visual personalities, and no matter what part of the Mushroom Kingdom you visit, from jungles and watery areas to deserts, the environments are just exploding with detail and colour. A few frame rate drops aside, which admittedly are bad and frequent enough to be immediately noticeable, the game is almost a technical masterpiece. On the audio side, the game has an excellent soundtrack, that somehow manages to feel right at home in a game that is about both, Mario and the Rabbids.

Whether its these audio-visual presentation achievements or its smart, chuckle-inducing writing, its varied map design or its increasingly complex battle system, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is a wonderfully pleasant surprise in almost everything that it tries to do. While a few months ago, no one would have expected this game to leave any kind of a mark in any way, shape or form, there is no doubt in my mind right now that once the end of the year rolls around, we’ll be looking at Mario + Rabbids as one of the best games of 2017.

Your primary progression in Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is governed by the weapons you have (though of course, you upgrade your characters, too). As such, finding new weapons can be paramount. In this guide, we tackle the location of the weapons hidden about in the first three worlds of the game.

WORLD 1

Killer Extinct
Go through the blue cannon and collect all the rings

Bwah Blaster
Activate a yellow switch in order to activate the red ring and unlock a chest

Gold Weapons
Beat the World’s secret level.

Gold Weapons
Finding Gold Weapons requires you to beat the World’s secret level

Rumble Bee
Activate the Red Ring in 1-1, and collect the weapon from the chest after collecting the coins

Turbine
After using the first canon in 1-2, use the canon on the right to get launched into a special stage. Complete the special stage

Rainbow Runner
Activate the red ring near the stone maze area and get this from the chest in World 1-4.

Spike Striker
In 1-5, after crossing the wooden bridges, hit the green switch, and enter the blue cannon. Complete the challenge.

Bowser Basher
After collecting the Spike Striker, return to the wooden bridges, and hit all the switches, and activate the Red Ring.

WORLD 2

Thunderceptor
From the previous weapon, continue down the path, and activate a yellow switch. A little ahead, go through the blue cannon, and complete the challenge

Special Delivery
In 2-8, activate the red ring in the frost maze

Hog Wild
Push boxes down a frosty path at Peach’s Castle- this should unlock a Red Ring, which you can activate to unlock a chest.

Bwahnzai Bill
In 2-1, push a ball down a slope; this should allow you to activate a Red Ring, and in turn, a chest.

Brute
In 2-3, you will come across a cannon and a chest. You need to progress through the cannon and complete the challenge.

Prickly Persuader
While crossing the wooden bridges, activate the Red Ring.

WORLD 3

Royal Rabbid
You need to pick up the statues and activate the Red Ring.

Thorn Scorn
In 3-1, go through a tube to activate a Red Ring.

Crosshead Orb
Go through a blue cannon and save Toadette. Once you are down, complete the Challenge.

No Pity Kitty
It’s next to the Boo statue.

Hydrant Hammer
You need to go through the blue cannon immediately after the boss battle and complete the challenge

Brunnehildea
At the end of 3-7, activate the Red Ring.

A guide to all the collectibles in the game.

Mario+Rabbids is, ultimately, a Ubisoft game. You know what this means, don’t you? It means that there are a lot of collectibles for you to hunt down in the game! Thankfully, the collectibles this time around are fun to find, and meaningful to collect- you get in game artwork, songs from the soundtrack, and 3D models to observe.

If you need help hunting all of this down, boy, have we got the guide for you (it’s this one FYI, just in case you were wondering).

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is out now, and it has turned out to be a great game, against all expectations, and beyond the wildest hopes and dreams. The charming take on XCOM in the Mushroom Kingdom has a flavor unique to it- supplemented by the fact that the game has nuanced gameplay that is compelling, wrapped up in an accessible package that evokes the best parts of Mario.

One of those parts includes the spectacular boss battles Mario is known for- of course, there are boss battles here, in this game, too. And they live up to the legacy and tradition of their parent series. They can also be really quite hard to get a handle on- which is where this guide comes in.

You can check out the video below to get strategies on defeating the bosses. A timestamped is provided under the guide- please bear in mind that that this video has spoilers.

Some tips to collect coins quickly in Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle.

Coins are, much like in the actual Mario games themselves, the primary currency in Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. You use them to buy new weapons- and since weapons are how your progression is measured in this game, you want to be able to buy better ones.

This, in turn, means that you want to be able to earn as many coins as possible when playing the game. This guide has some basic tips and tricks to maximize your coin yield:

Perform your best in battle. The yield is higher for getting through a battle in a fewer number of turns (below the ‘par’ for the course), and for not losing any party members- so, if something is not going your way, consider restarting the battle to maximize your coin yield.

Collect coins in the overworld. This seems like the dumbest, most obvious thing to say, but make sure that you pick up every coin you can get to while navigating the overworld

Collect coins during battle. Sometimes, coins show up on the battlefield, or they show up when you destroy cover or blocks, or when you get a Golden Shot on an enemy and cause them to explode in a shower of coins. No matter how, the same rule applies- if you see coins, make sure to grab every last one of them

Replay existing missions.

Challenge mode. Challenges are offered by Rabbids dressed as Toads throughout the Mushroom Kingdom- these net coins, and moreover, they can be replayed, too.
