The PS4 is still the top selling console of this generation in Japan.

While the Switch has stolen its thunder in Japan, the PS4 still continues trucking along, silently hitting milestones at a slow and steady pace. Today’s Media Create numbers, which we already reported, revealed that the PS4 has now hit 8 million units sold in Japan since its debut in February 2014. This number comes, therefore, 61 months after the console’s launch in the country.

This means that the PS4 is still the top selling current generation console in Japan—that said, the Switch, with 7.74 million units sold (in just 24 months) is probably just a few weeks away from overtaking it, especially given the pace of sales that Nintendo’s hybrid has enjoyed in the land of the rising sun since its launch.

This seems to align with the pace of sales the Switch has seen elsewhere, too—for instance, in the USA, the Switch is the fastest selling current generation console, coming in ahead of the Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo’s own Wii U (not that that last one is a big achievement, though).

FromSoftware's stealth-action title smashes sales charts in debut week.

Media Create has released this week’s charts for the video game software and hardware sales in Japan, which is largely dominated by new releases. The most dominant of these new releases is FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which has topped software sales with over 157,000 copies sold with three days on the market. Sekiro has enjoyed a strong start across the world, having achieved impressive numbers on Steam, and also having topped UK sales charts.

Meanwhile, Super Robot Wars T, another new release, occupies the next two positions in the charts, with its PS4 version selling over 88,000 copies and the Switch version selling over 44,000. Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy! also debuts strongly, with over 28,500 sales on the Switch and over 21,000 on the PS4 for fourth and sixth places respectively. Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland sold almost 28,000 on the PS4 and over 12,000 on the Switch, occupying the fifth and thirteenth places respectively. Last week’s chart leader, The Division 2, has dropped down to tenth position with 15,000 copies sold.

Things are steady on the hardware side of things. The Switch has once again moved over 56,000 units, just as it did last week, while the PS4 has collectively sold almost 35,000 units. You can check out the full hardware and software charts for the week ending March 24 below.

Ubisoft's open world looter shooter sells over 60k copies in debut week.

Media Create has released the video game software and hardware sales figures in Japan for the week ending March 17th. Ubisoft’s recently released open world looter shooter, The Division 2 has topped software sales, selling over 63,000 copies in its debut week. The game topped UK sales charts as well, in spite of a significant drop in sales over its 2016 predecessor. Interestingly enough, those figures are also lower than what Anthem sold in Japan in its own debut week.

Meanwhile, One Piece: World Seeker has also had a pretty strong debut, charting in second position with over 51,000 units sold. Devil May Cry 5, which topped the charts last week, is now in third place, having sold over 33,000 copies. Meanwhile, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe are still holding strong in the next two positions, with sales of nearly 21,000 and 17,000 respectively.

On the hardware front, the Switch is still the highest selling console of the week, but has seen a significant drop in sales, moving nearly 57,000 units as opposed to last week’s nearly 70,000. The PS4, on the other hand, has held steady at over 32,000 units sold (base PS4 and Pro model sales combined).

You can take a look at the full software and hardware charts below.

Media Create has released video game software and hardware sales charts from Japan for the week ending March 10th- to absolutely no one’s surprise, the biggest release of the week, Capcom’s Devil May Cry 5, has topped the software charts (as it did in the UK as well). It has done so quite effectively, in fact, having sold over 110,000 units with three days on the market.

Dead or Alive 6, which topped the charts on its debut last week, has dropped down quite significantly, ranking eleventh with just a little over 5,000 units sold. Left Alive, which debuted at fifth place last week, is in fifteenth place here, with less than 4,000 units sold. Over in the top 5, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe continue to hold strong. Meanwhile, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has seen a bit of a resurgence as well, moving up from #7 to #4, with over 12,000 units sold.

On the hardware side of things, the sales have held steady for the most part. The Nintendo Switch tops the charts again with over 69,000 units sold. The PS4, on the other hand, has seen a bit of a boost, most likely thanks to the release of Devil May Cry 5, moving a total of over 32,000 units (base model and PS4 Pro sales combined).

BioWare's looter shooter surprisingly tops Japanese sales charts in debut week.

Media Create has released its latest weekly charts for video game software and hardware sales in Japan, and the results are honestly quite surprising. For the week ending February 24, BioWare’s recently released looter shooter Anthem has topped the charts with three days on the market, selling nearly 80,000 units. That’s surprising, because Japan isn’t usually a market where looter shooters (or BioWare/EA titles) do exceptionally well. In comparison, Jump Force, a game pretty much tailor made for Japanese audiences, sold less on its debut last week than Anthem has done this week. Jump Force, meanwhile, is down to fifth place, with over 17,000 units sold this week.

Anthem, incidentally, also topped UK sales charts, but in spite of that, it performed quite poorly, selling half as much as Mass Effect Andromeda did at launch, and managing only 10% of the sales that Destiny did back when it came out in 2014. The fact that it has managed to sell better in Japan than in UK is somewhat surprising. Then again, Japan is a market that gravitates towards physical copies- much more so than the UK, at any rate, and the UK charts didn’t include digital sales, so we don’t exactly have the full picture here.

Meanwhile, the recently released NieR: Automata – Game of the YoRHa Edition also enjoyed a good debut, ranking fourth in the charts with over 21,000 copies sold. Ace Attorney Trilogy – which is out now in Japan and will be coming West soon as well – managed to sell less than 4,000 copies in a poor showing, debuting at eighteenth place. The likes of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and Kingdom Hearts 3 all continued to perform well.

On the hardware front, not much has changed. The Switch is still the highest selling console, in spite of a drop of roughly 12,000 units in sales as compared to last week, with over 53,000 units sold this week. The PS4, meanwhile, is holding steady at around 17,000 units sold (base model and PS4 Pro sales combined).

Just as the most recent weekly sales charts for UK were dominated by the slew of recent AAA releases, so too are the latest charts for video game software sales in Japan, released by Media Create, for the week ending February 17. Jump Force, Bandai Namco’s shonen jump crossover fighting game, debuted strongly, taking the top spot with nearly 77,000 units sold. Catherine: Full Body was another new release, coming in at second place with almost 52,000 in sales.

Far Cry New Dawn and Metro Exodus also debuted in the top 10 for the week, with the Ubisoft game selling over 26,000 units for a fifth place finish, and 4A Games’ post-apocalypse shooter taking the seventh spot with over 17,000 units sold. Kingdom Hearts 3 and Resident Evil 2 are both still in the top 10, at sixth and tenth positions respectively (selling over 19,000 and 11,000 units).

Other recent mainstays of the charts such as New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Pokemon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Eevee! also continued to chart, while evergreen titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Party, and Splatoon 2 continued to exhibit strong legs as well.

On the hardware side of things, the scenery remains mostly unchanged from last week. The Nintendo Switch was once again the highest selling console of the week with sales of over 65,000 units. Meanwhile, the PS4 collectively sold roughly 20,000 units as well (base model and PS4 Pro sales combined).

You can check out the full hardware and software charts below.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch is back to being the bestselling console after last week's blip.

Kingdom Hearts 3 and Resident Evil 2 debuted in the top two positions (respectively) in last week’s Media Create charts for video game software and hardware sales in Japan. That remains unchanged this week, though both games have seen significant drops in how many units they sold (which, to be honest, is understandable, given that this is their second week on the market).

Kingdom Hearts 3 is in at first place, with slightly over 91,000 units sold, while Resident Evil 2 is following behind in second position, having sold slightly north of 51,000 copies during the week. Both games are, of course, doing well the world over- Kingdom Hearts 3 has shipped 5 million copies worldwide, while Resident Evil 2 has shipped 3 million.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Super Smash Bros Ultimate have also retained their positions from last week, at third and fourth positions respectively, with the former selling nearly 46,000 units, and the latter moving a little more than 35,000 copies. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, which was in fifth place last week, has dropped down to ninth place, selling over 11,000 units, while Pokemon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Eevee! move up in its place from their eighth position last week with over 21,000 units sold.

On the hardware front, for the first time in roughly a year, last week the PS4 outsold the Switch (by a couple hundred units). This week, though, things are back to normal, with the Switch retaking its lead, selling over 69,000 units. The PS4, meanwhile, sold over 25,000 units (base PS4 and PS4 Pro sales combined).

Kingdom Hearts 3 sells over 600,000 units, while Resident Evil 2 crosses 250,000 sales.

It’s been a great week for video games- Kingdom Hearts 3 and Resident Evil 2 both launched within a few days of each other, and in the latest Media Create sales report for video game software and hardware sales in Japan for the week ending January 27, the two games have topped the charts- which isn’t really much of a surprise, considering the fact that they’ve been topping the most anticipated releases charts in Japan for months now.

Kingdom Hearts 3 was on top of the charts, selling slightly over 610,000 units, while Resident Evil 2 (which debuted on top in UK last week and has shipped over 3 million copies so far) debuted in second place, with over 250,000 units sold. Both games managed to sell that much in three days, with both having launched on January 25th (a worldwide simultaneous release for Resident Evil 2, with Kingdom Hearts 3 launching in the rest of the world four days later).

Ace Combat 7, which topped the charts last week, fell down to fifth place and saw a significant drop in sales, selling a little over 25,000 units this week. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe took the third position with over 57,000 units sold, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which moved over 38,000 units, took the fourth spot.

What’s really surprising is that on the hardware front, for the first time in about a year, the PS4 managed to outsell the Switch. Nintendo’s console-handheld hybrid saw a drop of roughly 20,000 units in sales over last week, selling over 52,000 units. The PS4 sold about as much, but came out ahead of the Switch by a couple hundred units (base model and PS4 Pro sales combined).

The latest Media Create charts for video game software and hardware sales in Japan are in, and in the week ending January 13, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has finally been dethroned, moving down from the perch that it has occupied since its launch right up until last week. Taking its place is New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (which debuted strongly in the UK as well), selling over 166,000 units in the space of just two days, making for a very impressive debut. Meanwhile, Smash Ultimate is still going strong in second place, with sales of over 62,000 units.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition also had an impressive debut, collectively selling over 68,000 units in two days. The PS4 version is ranked third, with over 41,000 units sold, while the Switch version, with sales of over 26,000 units, follows close behind in fourth place. There are no other new entrants in the charts. Dragon Quest Builders 2 also occupies two places in the top 10, with the Switch version (almost 20,000 units sold) and the PS4 version (almost 18,000 units sold) charting at number 5 and 7 respectively, with Super Mario Party filling in the gap between them in sixth place with just over 19,000 units sold.

On the hardware front, the Switch finally saw its sales slowing down in terms of momentum. Though it’s still on top of the hardware charts, this week it sold just north of 78,000 units, as compared to the nearly 200,000 units it moved last week. The PS4 also saw a significant drop, going from almost 110,000 units sold last week to just over 18,000 this week (base model and PS4 Pro sales combined).

Switch lifetime sales reach 7 million Japan, while PS4 reaches 7.7 million.

Nintendo Switch has been leading the Japanese hardware charts for a while now, but the extent of its dominance in Japan is something that can be easy to lose sight of. For instance, according to the Media Create report for last week, and as pointed out by Twinfinite, the Nintendo Switch ended up selling two times as much as the PS4 did last year.

The Switch sold 3,534,165 units in Japan last year, while PS4 and PS4 Pro cumulatively sold 1,726,031. This means, then, that the Switch ended up selling more than twice as many units as the PlayStation 4 family did last year. This is in spite of the Switch having a slow year in terms of new software releases, while PS4 got major new releases such as Monster Hunter World.

The Switch’s lifetime sales in Japan are also now over 7 million units, which puts it within kissing distance of the PS4’s lifetime sales in Japan of 7.7 million units. The difference, of course, is that it took the PS4 nearly five years to get to that number, while it took the Switch less than two years to do it.

Now to see if Japanese third parties start putting their stuff on the Switch.
