“The Mega Man series is one of our most important IPs, and we are continuously considering ways to develop it further," it said.

While many might believe that Capcom has been so focused on its big IPs in recent times like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter, that the company might have left classic franchise Mega Man behind. However, in a recent shareholders Q&A, the company reaffirmed that it still sees Mega Man as one of its most important IPs.

When asked about the company’s plans for the Mega Man franchise going forward, the company noted that, while it can’t provide any additional information at this time, it still sees great value in the classic side-scrolling series. It did, however, confirm that it is looking at ways to further develop it.

“The Mega Man series is one of our most important IPs, and we are continuously considering ways to develop it further,” said the company when asked about its plans for the IP. “However, we do not have any additional information we can share at this time.”

In answering another question, Capcom also noted that it has seen quite a few inquiries when it came to merchandise related to Mega Man, especially in overseas markets outside of Japan. “While we do not disclose individual sales figures by IP, we receive a particularly high volume of inquiries about the Mega Man series from overseas markets,” the company explained. “We will continue to focus on expanding this business further.”

Mega Man is largely considered to be a dormant franchise because the last mainline entry was Mega Man 11 in 2018. Since then, the company’s efforts surrounding the franchise have largely revolved around making the back catalogue of Mega Man games playable on modern systems through remasters.

Interestingly, the company had spoken about Mega Man being an important IP for it last year as well in a similar way. In a shareholders meeting from July 2024, the company had similarly stated that “Mega Man is one of our highly-valued IPs and we are considering how to create games for it on an ongoing basis.”

It is worth noting, however, that the Mega Man franchise has still remained largely dormant. The most recent release was a remaster compilation of the Mega Man Battle Network series. So far, the company has seemed unsure of how to modernize the side-scroller for today’s audiences.

Back in 2023, the company had spoken about how it was still looking into how it can develop new games in the franchise. Along with gameplay, the company was also seemingly looking at new concepts, ideas, and other aspects.

Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, which came out back in 2023, has proven to be quite successful for the company in the meantime. It was confirmed in April 2023 that the collection had already sold more than 1 million copies. For more details, check out our review, where we gave it a score of 7 out of 10.

Harebrained Schemes' Shadowrun trilogy, Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, Metal: Hellsinger and more are also coming this month.

Sony has announced the next wave of titles coming to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers starting December 19th. PS4 and PS5 players can play Grand Theft Auto 5, Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, Moto GP23, Metal: Hellsinger (with PS4 owners able to download the PS5 version), Salt and Sacrifice and Moonscars.

There’s also Gigabash, GRIME, Tinykin, Prodeus, Shadowrun Returns, Shadowrun: Dragonfall – Director’s Cut and Shadowrun: Hong Kong – Extended Edition. The only PS4 title for Extra subscribers is Mega Man 11, which should be backwards compatible on PS5. Overall, it’s a solid selection of games, especially for those who never played the Shadowrun series or want to try Grand Theft Auto 5 before its sequel launches.

As for PlayStation Classics, available exclusively to Premium subscribers, there’s Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 and 2 on PS4, and Thrillville, Thrillville: Off the Rails and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command for PS4 and PS5.

In his Twitter bio, Kazuhiro Tsuchiya reveals that he's "graduated" from Capcom. The producer was in charge of all things Mega Man.

With Street Fighter 6 around the corner and receiving great reviews (check out ours here), producer Kazuhiro Tsuchiya has reportedly left Capcom. Though not officially announced, the developer’s translated Twitter bio (as spotted by Rockman Corner) specifies that he’s graduated from the company. As anyone familiar with Vtubers will know, “graduation” usually means departure.

Tsuchiya isn’t just instrumental in Capcom’s latest fighting game. He was also the series producer for Mega Man following Keiji Inafune’s departure, working on all of the Legacy Collections and Mega Man 11. His most recent release is Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, which sold over one million units in less than two weeks.

Where the series goes from here, especially the live-service title Mega Man X DiVE, remains to be seen. It’s been some time since Capcom’s last major mainline title, so hopefully, there will be something announced. Stay tuned for more details and updates in the meantime.

The costume transforms the Palamute into Mega Man's canine companion with new animations. It will be unlocked in a new event quest.

Capcom has revealed its next big collaboration for Monster Hunter Rise and it’s with Mega Man 11. More specifically, it adds a costume that transforms one’s Palamute into Rush, Mega Man’s faithful pet. Check out the trailer below to see Rush in action.

The new outfit has some cool animations, like Rush transforming into a rocket-powered ride while dashing and deploying a spring when the player dismounts. Like with Street Fighter’s Akuma, there will be an event quest that must be completed to unlock the outfit. Sadly, it doesn’t seem like the Mega Man Palico outfit from Monster Hunter World is making a comeback.

The fifth Capcom collaboration DLC is set to arrive this Fall so stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks. Monster Hunter Rise is currently available for Nintendo Switch and will release in early 2022 for PC. It was recently rated in South Korea and Germany for the latter which indicates a possible announcement, perhaps at Tokyo Game Show 2022.

Capcom recently updated its list of Platinum Titles, which indicates games that have sold over one million units in their life-span. It revealed updated sales numbers for a number of franchises in the process. Monster Hunter World currently sits at 14.1 million units sold while Resident Evil 7: biohazard is at 6.8 million units sold.

Resident Evil 2, a remake of the 1998 PS One classic, is at 4.7 million units sold while Devil May Cry 5 managed to sell 2.7 million units. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne was reported to have shipped 2.8 million worldwide on October 29th and is now confirmed to have sold the same. Of course, there are a number of other first-timers to the Platinum Titles collection.

Okami HD, Mega Man 11 and Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection all managed to sell one million copies since launch. Capcom recently reported that it would work on more franchise revivals and remakes following the success Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry 5. We’ll see if this opens the door to new titles for Okami, Mega Man X and Dino Crisis in the coming years. In the meantime, check out Capcom’s top ten best-selling games till date below.

Monster Hunter World: 14.1 million units

The franchise may yet have a bright future.

Monster Hunter World isn’t the only standout in Capcom’s latest financial results. While it is the biggest performer, it seems Capcom’s efforts to revive the Blue Bomber, their mascot Mega Man, bore fruit last year too. Without going into specific numbers, Capcom reported that series revival Mega Man 11 ended up selling “well” last year.

“In addition, Mega Man 11 (for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC)… reported strong sales,” their fiscal report says. They also add that the Mega Man X Legacy Collection ended up selling well too, which should come as good news for fans since Capcom has previously stated that a new game in the Mega Man X franchise is contingent on fan reception to Mega Man 11.

“Mega Man X Legacy Collection, Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 and Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2 (for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC for all three titles) performed well thanks to a dedicated fan base and strong brand capabilities,” they noted.

This is excellent news, because it suggests that Capcom will not retire Mega Man for as long as they did for the last few years. While it’s clear that Mega Man will never sell as much as Monster Hunter or Resident Evil, at least we can be assured that it will sell well enough for Capcom to continue investing in the franchise.

As games like Monster Hunter World and Resident Evil 2 amply demonstrate, Capcom is well and truly back. They had a few rough years for a while there, but they’ve really come into their own over the last few years, and have been delivering incredible new takes on their long running franchises.

This has given us stuff like a long awaited revival of Mega Man, continued support for Street Fighter 5 after a troubled launch, a reinvention of Resident Evil with Resident Evil 7, possibly the franchise’s strongest entry yet with Resident Evil 2, and, of course, Capcom’s most successful game ever with Monster Hunter World. So it should come as no surprise that in 2018, the top rated publisher in terms of average Metacritic score was Capcom.

Metacritic revealed that the company landed in first place with an average Metascore of 79.5. This places Capcom ahead of Sega, which came in second place, EA (in third place), Nintendo in fourth place, Ubisoft in fifth place, and Sony in sixth place. Sony’s ranking in particular is a bit surprising given that they had the strongest year they have ever had as a publisher last year, but I imagine stinkers like Bravo Team really hurt their overall score.

But on the whole, it is Capcom’s triumph this year that is to be celebrated. And with Resident Evil 2, as well as the upcoming Devil May Cry V, we can expect them to continue to do great this year as well. Thank goodness for that—gaming is poorer when Capcom struggles.

Last year saw a number of tough bosses but these 13 took the cake.

There are boss fights and then there bosses. The foes listed here didn’t just a pose a challenge in 2018 – they threatened to wipe the floor with us at almost every turn. It’s one thing to have a frustrating encounter but pulling out all the stops and taking them down was a reward unto itself. Let’s take a look at the hardest boss fights of 2018.

Inner Agent 3 – Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion

Accessible only when all 80 challenges and the final event have been cleared in the Octo Expansion, Inner Agent 3 challenges you to “surpass the hero within”. Bombs galore, an infinite ink tank, the ability to fly and bombard you from above, splashdowns with huge impact radius – Inner Agent 3 can do it all and then some. And make no mistake – all of these attacks hurt.

Surmounting these challenges made for the most satisfying experiences of 2018.

Games that challenge us, that demand us to truly come to grips with their mechanics in order to get the most out of them, may not be for every single person out there, but they hold a huge place in the hearts of many nonetheless. There’s something extremely gratifying about understanding the ins and outs of a game, and then using that knowledge and skill to throw even the most difficult challenges it throws at you, especially when that game manages to find the right balance between being difficult and being fair. We played plenty of challenging games in 2018, and here in this feature, we’re going to talk about the fifteen that were the most difficult of them all. Without further ado, let’s get right into it.

BELOW

Below was in development for five years, which is a long time to wait for any game. Late in 2018, we finally got to play the game, and what a ride it was. While there’s an argument to be made that it’s difficulty can actually be a bit unfair at times, especially combined with the undeniable repetitiveness, most of the times, the game manages to find the right balance. Struggling through gruelling encounters and navigating around the many deathtraps it throws at you is as satisfying as you would expect.

Hopefully enough to show Capcom there is still interest in the brand.

Mega Man Legacy Collection has become the first game in the Mega Man series to cross 1 million units sold in 15 years. Capcom’s financial data, with a listing of all of their platinum sellers, notes that the Legacy Collection has sold over a million copies across all the SKUs.

While Legacy Collection is technically a ROM compilation of older games, and has been available across a whole range of systems over a few years now, this is still a notable milestone, because it indicates to Capcom, hopefully, that there is some interest in the Mega Man brand. Mega Man 11 came out earlier this year, and was great, and hopefully the success for this collection means we can see more along those lines from Capcom—maybe even DLC for Mega Man 11, which earlier the developers said that they aren’t quite sure about working on. That, or a Mega Man 12 along the same lines as 11 would be great, too.

Mega Man Legacy Collection is available on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Mega Man 11 is on Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
