Even with good gameplay, visuals and story-telling, these 10 games suffer from some of the worst voice-acting performances.

With all of the work that goes into video games, voice-acting can be one of the most important aspects. It’s performances by the likes of Troy Baker, Nolan North, Laura Bailey, Keith David, and many more that bring life to the characters that we know and love. Not every video game can boast amazing voice-acting all of the time though, either due to the budget, localization or poor direction. Let’s take a look at 10 games with some of the worst ever performances.

Deep Fear

Among the many quality horror titles lost to history, Sega’s Deep Fear definitely warrants a mention. Despite Resident Evil still being at the height of its popularity, Deep Fear’s tale of ex-Navy SEAL John Mayor as he investigates The Sea Fox submarine and Big Table facility for mysterious parasites still earned praise.

With excellent sound design and music, the latter composed by Kenji Kawai of The Ring fame, what could possibly kill the horror mood? The voice acting, unfortunately. It comes across as monotone at times and downright corny at others, marring the dialogue and any sense of tension. Plus the less said about DuBois Amalric, the designer of The Sea Fox and Big Table, the better.

The stuff of nightmares, these bosses dominated gamers while barely breaking a sweat during the 1990s era of gaming.

The last decade or two of gaming has seen its share of tough boss fights, for sure. However, the 1990s presented some of the toughest challenges in gaming yet and are still infamous to this day. Let’s take a look at 13 of the toughest bosses during that era.

Akuma – Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo

Did you think that M. Bison from Street Fighter 2, one of the toughest bosses in any game ever up till that point, was a wuss? Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo’s Akuma is the fight for you. Accessible only by reaching the last stage quickly without any continues in Arcade Mode, Akuma will appear and waylay Bison, then replace him as the final boss. In terms of abilities, he possesses the Zankuu Hadoken (which fires two Hadoken in mid-air), a teleport for quickly closing the distance, and very quick combos that take off chunks of health. Hilariously enough, his playable version isn’t as powerful but was still considered broken enough to warrant banning from tournaments.

No matter how many times they fell, these bosses kept coming back stronger.

No matter how many times a particular boss is beaten, they just can’t take a hint. Maybe they’ll pop up in the sequel as the true mastermind behind the scenes. Or perhaps they didn’t really die in the previous battle and are now back for more. Only one thing is guaranteed and that’s how they’ll never truly be defeated. Let’s take a look at such bosses that fit into that category. Spoilers abound so beware.

Guardian Ape – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Immortality in Sekiro is a curse, something you learn firsthand when dealing with the Guardian Ape. It’s torturous enough with its grabs, slams and dung and you’d think things would end upon severing its head. However, the Guardian Ape resurrects and utilizes the sword embedded in its neck along with Terror to make the fight even more annoying. Stabbing its centipede ends the fight but won’t permanently kill the ape. Instead, when traveling to the Ashina Depths, you fight the Headless Ape again, only this time it receives some backup from its mate. Defeating it will result in the centipede taking a rest…until you come back with the Mortal Blade and kill it for good.

Bad guys with tragic pasts.

We all love to hate a bad guy, especially when that bad guy pops up in a video game as a boss we have to fight. But sometimes, games turn the tables on us, and we end up empathizing with these bosses (or at least end up feeling bad for them), either because of their tragic pasts, or just their sheer bad luck. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at fifteen such bosses.

WILLIAM BIRKIN (RESIDENT EVIL 2)

William Birkin is no saint, and throughout the Resident Evil franchise, he’s been responsible for plenty of bad stuff, the most prominent of which was the outbreak in Raccoon City, which led to the entire city being nuked. But the fate that he suffered was a horrible one nonetheless. After Birkin infected himself with the G-Virus, he gradually became a prisoner in his own body, and in this tortured state, he was essentially forced to watch from the sidelines as the virus took over his body and mind and did one horrible thing after another.

They may not seem like a big threat at first but these bosses posed quite the challenge.

There’s nothing like encountering a slew of bosses that are just plain dorks. Ah the fun you’ll have beating them down along the way. However, these bosses don’t go down easily. In fact, they emerge as powerful threats and can easily take you down instead. There are also those who seem harmless that we never quite expected to pose such a great challenge later. Let’s take a look at 15 said bosses here.

The Pain – Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

At first, The Pain seems like a joke. Controlling bees? What’s next, throwing honey at his enemies? Of course, you need to remember that dozens of bees can literally sting you to death. During a battle with Ocelot, Snake ran afoul of The Pain and barely escaped death by stinging. Though he eventually defeated the Hornet Soldier, he most assuredly wasn’t the joke we made him out to be.
