Double crosses, revelations, triple agents, and more- here are all the Metal Gear post-credits conversations, ranked.

When you’re playing a Metal Gear game, you can’t help but remain glued to your screen right up until the credits roll- and beyond. This, of course, is a series that has been doing post-credits sequences since the very beginning, since before they were all the rage. Each game in the series has had post-credits scenes that have added more to that game’s story in different ways, often in very significant manner, and a lot of these scenes, which are, more often than not, conversations between two characters, end up being very memorable. Here, we’re going to take a look at each of Metal Gear’s post-credits conversations and rank them.

#10. METAL GEAR

This was back when the series was finding its feet, so it’s not surprising that in the many years since it came out, the original Metal Gear has been surpassed by essentially all of its successors. The game’s post-credits sequence was, as the game itself was, simple and to-the-point. Metal Gear ends with Solid Snake seemingly killing off Big Boss and leaving Outer Heaven, but after its credits have rolled, the game reveals that Big Boss is still alive, and has vowed revenge against Solid Snake.

Why are you still here?

Over the course of many years and multiple instalments, with an ensemble of dozens of memorable characters, Metal Gear has delivered some truly excellent quotes that have stuck with us to this day. In this feature, we’ll be talking about our fifteen favourite ones from the entire series.

This goes without saying, but there are spoilers ahead.

“FIND SOMETHING TO BELIVE IN” -SOLID SNAKE, METAL GEAR SOLID 2

An incredible way to put encapsulate what Raiden’s arc in Metal Gear Solid 2 was all about- while the Patriots, Raiden himself, and even we as players kept on hoping that he would live up to the legend of Solid Snake, the man himself told him in no vague terms that that was the last thing he needed to do. What he needed to do was find something that he could fight for, and find it himself, because only then would it mean anything to him.

"You can say that thanks to PlayStation Metal Gear Solid existed at all. The role that PlayStation had was to make Metal Gear possible."

The Metal Gear Solid series is one of the biggest, most successful, most influential gaming franchises of all time- but it owes its entire existence to the original PlayStation, as it turns out. Speaking at this year’s Develop conference (via GamesRadar), Kojima revealed that the Metal Gear franchise was internally considered concluded- until the PlayStation came along, with the promise of alluring polygonal 3D graphics, and all the possibilities that that entailed.

“I made Metal Gear 1 and 2, and at that point the series, for me, was complete and it was finished, and I started working on other adventure games,” Kojima said. “Back then Metal Gear was always intended to be a hide and seek game,” he explains. The original idea was always to have players hiding and that the viewpoint would change. However, “back then we didn’t have 3D polygons, we had to do everything in 2D. So for Metal Gear I had no choice but to use game design where you’re doing it from up above.”

After the release of Metal Gear 2, however, Kojima was done with the series, and had moved on to making other titles- before the promise of the PlayStation pulled him back in

“I was working on other adventure games until I heard the news that this hardware called PlayStation was going to be released. The impressive thing about that was you would be able to make real time polygons,” he said.

“For me, Metal Gear as a series was complete, finished to me, but that point I thought I would be able do what I originally intended to do with these polygons in real time. For example, if you are hiding under a table you can change the point of view, or hiding in a locker you can let the player see how it looks from inside the locker,” he said, before concluding, explicitly, that “You can say that thanks to PlayStation Metal Gear Solid existed at all. The role that PlayStation had was to make Metal Gear possible.”

This is probably the reason that the Metal Gear games would continue to be associated with PlayStation for a long time to come after the first game- most games either launched on PlayStation first, or were PlayStation exclusives, and through to the very end of the franchise, its iconic protagonist Snake continued to be one of the many icons synonymous with PlayStation.

The ultimate Metal Gear collection coming to Europe too.

The ultimate collection for Metal Gear Solid fans, the Metal Gear Solid: Legacy Collection, has launched exclusively on the PS3 in North America, and will now be launching in Europe as well. Konami calls it ‘ultimate,’ and they seem to have got it right: the Legacy Collection features Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2 HD, Metal Gear Solid 3HD, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Metal Gear Solid 4, along with the original, MCX versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2. It also features both Metal Gear Solid digital graphic novels (one of which has never seen a European release until now).

The Collection also comes in special packaging, and either stands as a great collectible for a series fan, or a great entry point to someone who has always been interested in the games, but has never picked them up.

Metal Gear Solid: Legacy Collection is a Playstation 3 exclusive compilation. The fifth game in the saga, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, launches next year.

Hideo Kojima announced (Twitter) a while back that in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, the PSOne Metal Gear Solid will also be included along with MGS2, MGS3 and MGS: Peace Walker, the PSP game that was released last year. “Metal Gear HD series. The domestic version is a package of MGS2 and MGS3,” […]

The domestic version is a package of MGS2 and MGS3,” he wrote.

“But, there is also a product code for MGS1, and MGS3 is subsistence specification, so MG1 and MG2 which were sold on MSX are included.

“This means, you can enjoy MG1, MG2, MGS1, MGS2 and MGS3 with this one!”

However, it is not clear if this specific collection will be available outside of Japan, meaning regions outside of Japan might have access to just MGS2, MGS3 and MGS: Peace Walker.

Andriasang reports that the Japanese HD Collection will include HD remakes of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, and a code for Game Archives version of Metal Gear Solid. The MGS3 version included in the collection will be Subsistence, meaning fans will also have access to the MSX originals- Metal Gear 1 and 2. So, in total, the collection will include Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3.

The HD remake of Peace Walker will be sold separately in Japan.

Outside of Japan, according to Adriasang’s report, the HD Collection will include MGS2, MGS3 and MGS: Peace Walker, and the Subsistence version of MGS3 will be included in the collection, meaning, again, we will also get Metal Gear 1 and 2 (which are exactly in their original form, not remastered. Even the menus aren’t changed- the devs wanted to keep it retro). MGS1, apparently, will not be included.

So, we aren’t exactly sure yet just what the hell is going on. But stay tuned, and we will keep you updated and keep hitting you with more info on this as it comes our way.
