Metroid Dread Sells 2.74 Million Units, Mario Party Superstars Hits 5.43 Million

Along with announcing that the Nintendo Switch had sold over 100 million units till date, Nintendo also offered updated sales numbers on several titles. This includes newer games like Metroid Dread, which has sold 2.74 million copies as of December 31st 2021. That’s not bad, considering it launched on October 8th and is the first major title in the series since Metroid: Samus Returns from 2017.

Mario Party Superstars performed very well, as expected, with 5.43 million sales since its October 29th launch. The other new title released in the quarter was Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain with 1.28 million sales since launching on December 3rd. Game Builder Garage managed to sell 1.01 million units while WarioWare: Get It Together!, which launched in September 2021, hit 1.24 million sales.

Other noteworthy numbers include Luigi’s Mansion 3 at 11.04 million sales; Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury selling 8.85 million units; The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD at 3.85 million sales; New Pokemon Snap at 2.36 million sales; Mario Golf: Super Rush at 2.26 million units sold; and Miitopia at 1.63 million sales. With E3 2021 officially in the bag, it’s time to look back on all of the big announcements and new games that were revealed. From new IPs to familiar franchises, there was something for everyone this year (except Splinter Cell fans but what else is new?). Let’s take a look at 30 new titles announced during the expo.

Redfall

Arkane Studios’ rumored Omen was finally revealed as open world co-op shooter Redfall. The story sees an island in Massachusetts cut off from the rest of the world after vampires block out the sun. Naturally, as a survivor, you need to kill them and escape. Though gameplay wasn’t revealed, there will be multiple playable characters, each with their own unique abilities and gadgets. And though it may seem akin to Back 4 Blood, Bethesda’s Pete Hines says that a more methodical approach will be needed instead of running and gunning. Redfall is slated to release in Summer 2022 for Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Metroid Dread Announced – 2D Title Releases October 8th on Switch

Metroid Prime 4 is still in the works, but Nintendo has a new 2D Metroid in the works as well, true to multiple leaks. It’s called Metroid Dread and offers a 2D side-scrolling perspective like the older titles. It’s even referred to as “Metroid 5” in the trailer. Check it out below.

The “Dread” seems to come from a robot named E.M.M.I. that’s pursuing Samus. It seems impenetrable which means she’ll have to run, jump and even use an ability that can camouflage her in plain sight. Many of the same Metroid tropes return though, from using the Morph Ball to travel into new areas, different power-ups and much more. There’s even a slight hint of other characters that could appear during the journey.

Metroid Dread will be releasing on October 8th for the Nintendo Switch so expect more gameplay and details in the coming months. Stay tuned for more news and announcements from the Nintendo Direct E3 2021 showcase.
