Former Metroid Prime designer Michael Wikan states getting Metroid Prime 3 in particular working with traditional cotnrols would be a "herculean" effort.

Rumours of the Metroid Prime trilogy being remastered and ported to the Switch have been around since pretty much the day Metroid Prime 4 was announced, and even after the latter’s development was rebooted, leading to an indefinitely delay, those rumours have refused to go away. Of course, a Metroid Prime Trilogy release for the Switch remains as elusive as ever- so what exactly is the deal with that? Well, according to former Retro Studios veteran Michael Wikan, who was a senior designer on all three Metroid Prime games, that might be a little unlikely.

As spotted by Nintendo Everything, Wikan recently said in Facebook comments that Metroid Prime Trilogy would be hard to pull off for the Switch. According to Wikan, Metroid Prime 3 in particular would present challenges, in terms of translating the fully motion controlled game to traditional controls.

“I am pretty skeptical it will happen,” Wikan wrote. “It was straightforward to update Metroid Prime 1 and Metroid Prime 2 to motion controls, but converting Metroid Prime 3 to normal controls would be a herculean effort, as it is scripted very specifically using volumetric triggers to detect the motion in precise manners to do specific switches, and the bosses are tuned to take into account the ease of gestural aiming.”

Wikan also wrote that in the absence of “functional editor tools” at Retro Studios, the task of recoding Metroid Prime 3 would be a challenging one. He wrote: “The biggest issue is that Retro Studios no longer has functional editor tools to work with the Prime code base, so everything has to be ‘brute force’ hard coded.

“Rebuilding the hundreds of interaction sets in Metroid Prime 3 alone, not to mention re-tuning the game play to take in the slower engagement pacing of conventional controls, would probably take a year with a 4-5 person team, full-time, by itself.”

Of course, this doesn’t mean that this will never happen – perhaps Retro has been working on this behind the scenes for some time – but Wikan’s comments do make it clear that even if it does, it wouldn’t be a simple porting job- which would also explain why it hasn’t happened in all this time.

Here’s hoping we do get to play the entire trilogy on the Switch before Metroid Prime 4 launches though- whenever that happens.

No matter how many times they fell, these bosses kept coming back stronger.

No matter how many times a particular boss is beaten, they just can’t take a hint. Maybe they’ll pop up in the sequel as the true mastermind behind the scenes. Or perhaps they didn’t really die in the previous battle and are now back for more. Only one thing is guaranteed and that’s how they’ll never truly be defeated. Let’s take a look at such bosses that fit into that category. Spoilers abound so beware.

Guardian Ape – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Immortality in Sekiro is a curse, something you learn firsthand when dealing with the Guardian Ape. It’s torturous enough with its grabs, slams and dung and you’d think things would end upon severing its head. However, the Guardian Ape resurrects and utilizes the sword embedded in its neck along with Terror to make the fight even more annoying. Stabbing its centipede ends the fight but won’t permanently kill the ape. Instead, when traveling to the Ashina Depths, you fight the Headless Ape again, only this time it receives some backup from its mate. Defeating it will result in the centipede taking a rest…until you come back with the Mortal Blade and kill it for good.

Not hard enough? Here, torture yourself some more.

Though there are many who prefer their games to be accessible, there are also those who really like to challenge themselves. Often, some titles satisfy those needs by themselves, but more often than not, games end up giving options to players in case they want something really challenging- options that they present as rewards. Finishing a game and then playing it through again on a newly unlocked harder difficulty isn’t something that everyone enjoys, that’s for sure, but there’s a certain appeal to it as well. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at some games that featured some truly gruelling unlockable harder difficulties.

METAL GEAR SOLID 2

Metal Gear Solid 2 came out in Europe a few months after it did elsewhere, but players got a pretty sweet reward for their patience in the form of European Extreme difficulty. Even harder than regular Extreme, European Extreme gave players zero rations throughout the games, buffed up enemies so they could essentially deliver one hit kills (especially the bosses), and made it so that if you ever broke stealth and alerted an enemy, it was game over for you.

Whether from collecting everything or being at the right place at the right time, secret scenes abound in games.

We often talk about Easter Eggs and secrets in video games which reward players for going above and beyond with their completion tendencies. While some games offer hidden cutscenes for the same, there are others which have hidden scenes just lying around for anyone to discover. So why not take a look at examples of both for the 15 best secret cutscenes in video games? Let’s get right to it and be warned: Spoilers await.

Anya’s Grave – Gears of War 4

Perhaps one of the more interesting moments in Gears of War 4 is JD Fenix veering off the main mission path on the family estate to visit his mother’s grave. We’re not told up to that point about what happened to Anya but this quiet moment of introspection and sadness tells us what she meant. In a way, it’s a respectful send-off of sorts to one of the series’ key characters.
