From fantastic takes to authentic recreations to everything in between, these real-world inspired open world settings stand out in memory.

As good as it feels to play a game that can thoroughly transport you to a unique, creative, fictional world with its very own set of rules, just as often, it can be equally entertaining to dive into games where the places you’re visiting are actual, real-world locations. From fantastical takes on real locations to games that attempt to more authentically recreate them to everything in between, these games can come in many different flavours, and here, we’re going to talk about some that stand out.

Before we proceed, keep in mind that we’re limiting this list only to games that are set in actual, real places, which games that are set in fictional places that are based on real locations won’t be included- so you won’t see games like Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption in here. With that out of the way, let’s get started.

SLEEPING DOGS

One of the most criminally underrated open world crime games we’ve ever played, Sleeping Dogs is something of a shoo-in for such a list. Its open world Hong Kong setting was one of its biggest highlights, thanks not only to how detailed and authentic it was, or how vibrant, alive, and dense it felt, but also how perfectly it served as a setting to the game’s bombastic combat and action.

Join us as we take a look back at the rich history of the PS3 and run down 15 of the best games available on the console.

Sony fumbled out the gates with the PS3 with its pricing and a hardware architecture that was notoriously difficult to develop for, but it was able to turn its fates around for the better with a steady stream of first and third-party games – some of which would go down to become the greatest hits of all time. With this feature, we are taking a look back at Sony’s seventh-generation offerings – and counting down 15 of the best games that are available on the platform.

A quick note! Don’t be surprised if you don’t find some of your favorites on this list. And while you’re here, why not check the previous list for added context?

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

Mass Effect 2

BioWare’s Mass Effect 2 continues to be held in high regard even after all these years, and a lot of it can be attributed to the best-in-class narrative that twists and twists based on the choices you make and of course, the spectacular action that takes you through it all. Mass Effect 2 might just be the best action rpg out there, thanks to a well-rounded narrative that features memorable characters like Illusive Man and bombastic moments like the Suicide Mission. It’s also one of the best-looking games on the now-dated console platform, but one of the best nevertheless.

These are some of the best open world racers you'll ever have the pleasure of playing.

An open world setting can be a tricky thing to pull off for a racing game. For a genre that’s so focused on constant speed and forward momentum, the absolute freedom of a vast open world can be a tough thing to reconcile, and it can be just as tough to actually populate that world with interesting and varied activities that all fit within the framework of a racing game. Even so, there have been more than a few excellent open world racers that have managed to do just that, and here, we’re going to highlight some of the best of the best, as we rank the ten games that we feel stand the tallest in the genre.

#10. TEST DRIVE UNLIMITED 2

Test Drive Unlimited 2 may not have been the perfect game by any stretch of the imagination, with everything from its inconsistent world design and forgettable and threadbare attempts at telling a story to the bevy of technical issues the game launched with dragging the experience down in some pretty significant ways. But there’s a lot of fun to be found here nonetheless. Large chunks of its open world are absolutely gorgeous, and as such, a joy to simply drive around in, while there’s also no shortage of excellent racing events and activities scattered throughout all of that real estate. Sure, you have to cut through some less-than-stellar stuff to get to the good stuff, but when you do get to it, it’s really, really good.
