The follow-up to Minecraft Dungeons is rumoured to be titled Project Snowblind internally, and will feature new zones and enemies.

While dungeon crawling Minecraft spin-off Minecraft Dungeons was quite popular when it came out – it even crossed 25 million players back in 2023 – Mojang has been quiet about its future. A new rumour indicates that a sequel to Minecraft Dungeons might be in the works.

Datamining team XOXLeak has discovered that a game, internally titled Project Spicewood, has been in development for the last two years, and that it is a sequel to Minecraft Dungeons. It is worth noting that, as is the case with most rumours, this one should also be taken with a grain of salt.

According to the leak, some of the new zones in Project Spicewood will be Honeycomb Fields (with Undermill, Farm, Island, Lake, Fields and Forest as its main points of interest), Desert (with Cliff, Fortress, Mountain, Village and Icelagoon), and Forest (with Deep Dark Entrance, Outpost Entrance, Witchzone and Shady Forest). There will also be a town, which will likely be the base of operations for players.

Back in September 2023, Mojang had announced that update 1.17 would be the last bit of content made for Minecraft Dungeons, and that the development team that worked on the game would be moving on to another Minecraft-related project. This timeline seemingly matches up with XOXLeak’s post quite well, since we’re close to two years having passed since the announcement.

“As 1.17 was Minecraft Dungeons’ final update, our team has now moved on to new projects that continue to explore experiences in the Minecraft universe,” said Mojang at the time. “This means that there are no new features or content updates planned for the game. We do intend to continue bringing new experiences to the Minecraft universe and give our team the freedom to keep exploring the types of games they’re passionate about – just as they did with Dungeons.”

Since its release back in May 2020, Minecraft Dungeons had been quite popular. February 2022 saw the game’s player base rise all the way up to 15 million, and then in September 2023, Mojang had announced that more than 25 million players had experienced the dungeon crawler.

Another spinoff, Minecraft Legends, has also been quite popular. Back in April 2023, Mojang revealed that it the title had more than 3 million players since its launch. The game had seen plenty of updates, but in January 2024, Mojang had announced that the Snow vs Snouts update would be the last one the title would get.

For more details on both of the spin-off games, check out our reviews of Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends.

In the meantime, Minecraft continues to be incredibly popular. A report from October 2023 revealed that the game had surpassed 300 million copies sold since its official launch all the way back in 2011. Currently, Minecraft sits at the top of the charts for the number of copies it has sold, with GTA 5 being second with roughly 210 million copies sold, and Wii Sports being a distant third with 82.9 million copies sold.

The dungeon crawling title launched for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC in May 2020.

Minecraft Dungeons might not be Microsoft’s biggest or most high-profile release, but the dungeon crawling action RPG spinoff has, nonetheless, managed to attract a healthy player base.

Mojang and Microsoft have announced that Minecraft Dungeons has surpassed 25 million players across all platforms since its launch in May of 2020, nearly three and a half years ago. At last count, in February 2022, that number stood at 15 million players, so the game has clearly maintained impressive momentum in terms of attracting new players.

To commemorate the milestone, a new trailer has also been released, which showcases gameplay footage, highlights some of the game’s many post-launch updates, and of course, thanks the community for its support. Check it out below.

Mojang has also confirmed that update 1.17 was the last big update to release for Minecraft Dungeons, with the dungeon crawler’s development team having shifted focus to new projects, which are also set in the Minecraft universe. You can read more on that through here.

Minecraft Dungeons is available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

That means Mojang won't be releasing any new features or content updates for the dungeon crawler from this point forward.

The Minecraft brand’s versatility means there’s no shortage of different kinds of gaming experiences it can provide, and we got a taste of that with the launch of dungeon crawling action RPG Minecraft Dungeons with its launch in 2020. Over three years on from its release though, support for the game is ending.

Mojang has announced that update 1.17 was the final major update for Minecraft Dungeons, and that its development team is now focused on developing “new projects”, which are also set in the Minecraft universe.

“As 1.17 was Minecraft Dungeons’ final update, our team has now moved on to new projects that continue to explore experiences in the Minecraft universe,” Mojang wrote. “This means that there are no new features or content updates planned for the game. We do intend to continue bringing new experiences to the Minecraft universe and give our team the freedom to keep exploring the types of games they’re passionate about – just as they did with Dungeons.”

Mojang has also announced that Minecraft Dungeons has exceeded 25 million players worldwide.

Meanwhile, another Minecraft spinoff, action strategy title Minecraft Legends, launched earlier this year for PC and consoles, and had crossed 3 million players within a couple of weeks of its release.

The event kicked off last week and will run until June 15, seasonal trials, new gear and cosmetics, a new tower challenge, and more.

Minecraft Dungeons might not be as much of a dominating presence in the cultural zeitgeist as the phenomena of a game that spawned it, but then again, it was never meant to be that. What it was meant to be was a solid action RPG offshoot that could appeal to a wide audience and keep them coming back for more for a long time to come, and thanks to its solid inherent quality and the consistent post-launch support it has released with expansions, seasonal events, and more, it’s been quite successful in its attempts to do that.

It’s now two years ago that Minecraft Dungeons originally launched, and sure enough, Mojang is looking to commemorate that occasion in style– with a special event that actually kicked off on May 25, and will run until June 15. And what has that celebration brought to the table? Well, there are new seasonal trials for players to take on, which will yield various rewards, including new gear like the Sparkler, Sweet Tooth, or the Sugar Rush, in addition to the new anniversary cape. There’s also a new tower challenge that’ll help you earn the friendship of the baby moobloom pet- and yes, you read that right.

Check out a brief teaser trailer of the game’s 2nd anniversary celebration below.

Minecraft Dungeons is available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Halo Wars: Definitive Edition and Killer Instinct are also Steam Deck Verified, while Gears Tactics and Minecraft Dungeons get the "Playable" tag.

The Steam Deck has been out for well over a month, and the list of games in Steam’s massive library that are fully optimized for the handheld device has been growing consistently. Microsoft has been playing its part in that well, having confirmed less than a month ago that the likes of Psychonauts 2 and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice had joined that list.

Now, more Xbox first party games have received the “Steam Deck Verified” tag, which denotes the highest level of compatibility for a game on the device. As announced in an update published on Steam, this new batch includes Fable Anniversary, Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition, Halo Wars: Definitive Edition, Killer Instinct, Kalimba, Halo: Spartan Strike, and Rush: A Disney–Pixar Adventure.

Meanwhile, a handful of new games have also been given the “Playable” tag, which, as you may have guessed, means that though these games are playable on the Steam Deck, they haven’t been fully optimized for the device. The new batch of Playable games includes Gears Tactics, Minecraft Dungeons, Deadlight, and Halo: Spartan Assault.

Microsoft’s been announcing new batches of games at a steady clip until now, so hopefully it won’t be long before more games join the list. Stay tuned for future updates.

Mojang's dungeon-crawling action RPG will be celebrating this milestone with a timed winter-themed event until close to the end of this month.

Minecraft Dungeons may not have set the world on fire since its launch in 2020, but the dungeon crawling action RPG spinoff has done more than well enough for itself in that time, especially if you’re going by the numbers. Recently, for instance, Mojang announced on Twitter that Minecraft Dungeons has now amassed over 15 million players across all platforms to date, surpassing the 10 million it stood at at this time last year.

To commemorate the milestone, Minecraft Dungeons has also kicked off a new inter-themed event, Festival of Frost, which will run from now until February 22. This will bring new “frost-themed floors” in the Tower and seasonal trials from the Chills and Thrills event, while every player that logs into the game during this period will also get the Iceologer Cape for free.

Minecraft Dungeons is available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Season 1, The Cloudy Climb, brings a Premium Pass that players can level up to earn various cosmetics like emotes, skins and pets.

Minecraft Dungeons will continue to receive big updates in the coming months, starting with the release of Seasonal Adventures. Announced during Minecon Live, Mojang revealed a Battle Pass-like system where players could level up through various ranks and earn cosmetic rewards. These include emotes, skins, flairs and pets.

Along with a free track (that provides different currency), players can also spend on a Premium Pass. The first Season is The Cloudy Climb and it arrives in December. On top of this is a free mode called the Tower. This is a 30-level mode with each floor containing different enemies, bosses, NPCs and so on. It changes every two weeks, providing a new range of challenges to face.

Minecraft Dungeons is currently available for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch. Along with being available on Xbox Game Pass, it also recently launched on Steam.
The action RPG looter is available in its base version and in an Ultimate Edition which contains all of its paid DLC along with other goodies.

Mojang’s Minecraft Dungeons, an action RPG looter spin-off set in the Minecraft universe, is now available on Steam. Along with the base game, PC players on the platform can also purchase the Ultimate Edition which includes all of its DLC released till now. This includes Jungle Awakens, Flames of the Nether, Hidden Depths, Echoing Void, Howling Peaks and Creeping Winter along with some digital artwork and the soundtrack.

Each DLC pack introduces new areas, story missions and loot while numerous free updates have added other new features. Though not as complex or mechanically demanding as, say, Path of Exile, Minecraft Dungeons has garnered a decent amount of acclaim for being a more streamlined looter. It even has cross-platform play with support for up to four players in co-op.

For more details, you can check out our official review of the game here. Minecraft Dungeons is currently available for Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch along with being available on Xbox Game Pass. It also supports 4K and 120 FPS on Xbox Series X.

Mojang’s Minecraft Dungeons has hit 10 million players since launch.
