Will MLG give the poor PS4 its due now?

The DualShock 4 is a great controller- it’s amazing, really, at how well it modernizes the classic (and frankly, obsolete) PlayStation dual analog design for the current era of more action oriented games, but apparently, it’s still lacking. Apparently, it’s not good enough to be ‘competitive.’ Because, you see, a new competitive controller for the PlayStation 4 (pictured above) is releasing this August. It’s by Scuf Gaming, and it’s called the 4PS, aimed squarely at the competitive games segment.

It makes sense, really- the DualShock 4 is a great controller, but competitive gamers have roundly rejected it (and by extension, the PlayStation 4), with competitive gaming leagues like MLG opting to make the Xbox One (and Wii U with Gamecube controllers) their official machines for all all sanctioned tournaments and events.

The new competitive controller, then, should make the PlayStation 4 competitive (see what I did there?). It should ensure that just the controller design is not the reason that an otherwise excellent console does not reach a pretty lucrative demographic of video games.

While the Call of Duty Championship will be taking place in the United States, a European preliminary of the same will be taking place on March 1st to 2nd. There will be 26 teams from various countries like France, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherlands and more, with each team participating in the preliminaries for the right to head to main championship held in Los Angeles on March 28th to 30th.

The preliminaries will be taking place in the Twickenham Stadium for a €15,000 prize, with the top eight teams going on to the Call of Duty Championship. This will mark the first competitive competition to take place on the Xbox One, with a prize pot of $1 million the line. Eight teams taking place in the pre-lims are from the UK so it shoudl be interesting to see who ultimately wins out.

You can catch the competition on MLG.tv or Xbox Live, so stay tuned for further details.

Major League Gaming has announced that Halo 4 will be making its professional gaming debut this November at the MLG Fall Championship; days before it officially launches around the world on November 6th for Xbox 360.

It sounds super exciting but as of right now, the game will only be playable for professional players in a one off, pre-launch event which kicks off on November 2nd and ends on the 4th, running throughout the Fall Championship weekend.

Major League Gaming are still yet to announce the number of teams competing, how much prize money is up for grabs and how teams will be able to enter the tournament (whether it’s invite-only). It is expected that they’ll announce the specific details for the highly anticipated event in the coming days and whether or not the public will be able to get their hands on it.

It’s going to be a massive year for eSports with both Halo 4 and Black Ops 2 pushing competitive gaming leagues, bring on the 2012-13 season.
