Current owners on Switch 1 can pay for the Upgrade Pack of the Switch 2 Edition, which is also getting a physical release on April 16th.

Out of nowhere, Nintendo has released Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on the Switch 2. It’s available now on the eShop for $64.99 with a physical version launching on April 16th. Of course, those who own the game on Switch 1 can purchase the Upgrade Pack for the Switch 2 version, though it’ll cost $4.99.

Unlike Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park and Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World, however, there isn’t any additional content. Instead, the Switch 2 version offers frame rates up to 60 FPS and resolutions up to 4K. It’s a sizable jump for the open-world title visually, but that’s it.

On the bright side, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition offers plenty of new additions for those who only played the original. Alongside some post-campaign story content and a new location, there are also two new party members and new tracks. You can check out our review here for more details.

The real question now is whether Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and 3 will receive the Switch 2 upgrade treatment, especially considering their above-average sales. It wouldn’t be surprising if MonolithSoft has a brand-new title in the works, built specifically for the console, so stay tuned for any official announcement.

16 songs, the Cloud Sea of Alrest stage, and much more also included in the Challenger Pack.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai showcased the next Challenger Pack, Pyra/Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Along with providing details on each fighter’s characteristics, he also announced a release date. Pyra/Mythra will be available later today, both standalone and as part of Fighters Pass Vol. 2.

The main appeal of Pyra/Mythra is being able to switch between them during combat. You can also choose who to start with by pressing Y at the character select screen. Mythra is about speed, able to move faster and attack faster, but Pyra has power and more range. So while Mythra might be good at edge-guarding and generally confusing the opponent (while also having Foresight to dodge and counter-attack), Pyra has powerful Smash attacks.

Each has their own Specials which makes for a total of six along with 16 costumes (which are provided in pairs so no mixing and matching). In terms of other content, Challenger Pack 9 includes the Cloud Sea of Alrest stage and 16 songs from the Xenoblade Chronicles series. It also adds a Special Spirit Board with some new Spirits to challenge.

For more details, check out the latest “Mr Sakurai Presents” below.

The musical backing to Nintendo's upcoming RPG is just amazing.

Nintendo keeps the hits rolling out and the momentum on their massively popular hybrid console going strong with JRPG Xenoblade Chronicles 2 arriving on December 1st. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is the follow up to the cult classic Wii and New 3DS title, Xenoblade Chronicles.

Nintendo released a new music video with a track from the game, ‘Shadow of the Lowlands’, on their Youtube channel. Composer Yasunori Mitsuda and Irish choral Ensemble Anuna have brought us something truly emotional and hauntingly beautiful with their collaboration, hinting at the tone of the game.

Mitsuda has revealed the length of the soundtrack in the past, and lamenting that he might not have the chance to take on another project of this scope in his lifetime ever again. The already massive game is set to expand even further through a year of DLC content plans, and if the early Famitsu reviews are anything to go by, this is a game Switch owners shouldn’t miss.

A whole year of Xenoblade 2 content to occupy your time

Nintendo has had one fantastic year of releases so far, with a new console backed by some of the hottest, most anticipated and highest rated games of the whole year in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey among others. But in the run up to December, Nintendo wants to remind you that the Switch isn’t done quite yet, and they’ve got a huge JRPG on the way

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 just had a Nintendo Direct all to itself, revealing a handful of new details about the game and its world. The most important part of which was the reveal of a season pass, which will flesh out nearly a year’s worth of content for the game. Also at launch, should you want to play with the original Japanese voice acting, there’s a free DLC for that.

A handful of extras will come to the game to begin with, before next summer adds a challenge mode, and finally next autumn brings fresh story content. If you can’t wait, a new quest will come soon to Breath of the Wild where Link can be decked out like Xenoblade 2 protagonist, Rex.
