Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash doesn't do much for Wii U sales.

We’ve seen the PlayStation 4 topping Japan sales but it’s not often that the PlayStation Vita manages to get one over on the New Nintendo 3DS XL. According to this week’s Media Create charts, it was Dragon Quest Builders which propelled the Sony platforms to the top.

Dragon Quest Builders debuted in first and second place in the software charts with 178,016 and 141,369 units respectively on PS Vita and PlayStation 4. The PS Vita managed to sell 45,114 units while the PS4 sold 32,556 units in the past week. Despite the debut of Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash on Wii U, which sold 55,331 units, the Wii U only sold 8,931 units.

The other big success in the charts was Monster Hunter X which continues to sell well. It hit 17,023 units with lifetime sales at 2,661,523 units. The New 3DS XL only managed to sell 22,593 units though.

Thoughts on this week’s numbers? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more information.

Capcom revealed its financial results following Q3 of fiscal year 2015 and things look pretty good so far.

Along with an increase in net sales and operating income over the same period last year, the company also reported favourable performance from many of its core franchises. Monster Hunter X leads the pack with more than three million units sold over the previously forecast 2.5 million units. Dragon’s Dogma Online, available in Japan for PS3/PS4/PC, has also reported strong performance and downloads for Monster Hunter Explore on mobiles surpassed three million.

In terms of overall franchise sales, Capcom also offered some updates. Dragon’s Dogma has sold more than 2.4 million copies in its lifetime, Monster Hunter has sold 36 million, Resident Evil is at 66 million and Street Fighter is at 37 million. We’ll see how the company performs with Monster Hunter X yet to release outside Japan and Street Fighter 5 due out in February so stay tuned for more information.

Splatoon, Monster Strike and Super Mario Maker still going strike.

This week’s Media Create charts are now available, indicating software and hardware sales in Japan for the past week. To the surprise of none, Capcom’s Monster Hunter X sold 65,227 units with total lifetime sales of 2,587,086 units.

Monster Strike was still in second place with 38,795 units this week (lifetime sales of 738,231 units) while Splatoon sold 28,945 with a total of 1,182,934 units sold since its release date. Super Mario Maker has also been doing good numbers with 25,854 units sold this week, bringing its total sales to 752,739 units.

For the PS Vita, there was Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition selling 23,161 units (607,878 units for its lifetime) and Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Vs Force selling 13,643 units (lifetime sales of 121,406 units). Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam was in tenth place with 9,497 units sold with the total lifetime sales of 207,812 units. Considering that it released in December, it’s interesting to see it so low in the charts. What are your thoughts on this week’s sales? Let us know in the comments.

After the reported success of the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo Wii U, especially the latter which saw Super Mario Maker and Splatoon average more than 60K units each, Media Create’s charts revealed the best-selling games and consoles for the week past in Japan.

Monster Hunter X is on top with 149,587 units sold followed by Monster Strike with 140,479 units (and no, there’s no relation between the two). Super Mario Maker sold 68,523 units on the Wii U while Splatoon sold 60,991 units for the week. Yo-Kai Watch Busters: Akaneko-dan/Shiroinu-tai on the 3DS managed to sell 56,819 units this week.

Hardware sales were also exceptionally strong for the New Year. The New Nintendo 3DS XL sold 82,675 units followed by the PlayStation Vita with 77,926 units, the PlayStation 4 with 70,596 units, the Nintendo Wii U with 55,798 units and the New Nintendo 3DS with 23,895 units.

Total sales of series passes 36 million units.

There’s no stopping the Monster Hunter series – Capcom has announced that Monster hunter X recently reached a new shipment milestone in Japan with three million units shipped thus far. This include digital copies sold through the Nintendo eShop as well. Even better, the game managed to hit this figure within one month.

The Monster Hunter series as a whole has reached a cumulative sales total of more than 36 million units as of December 24th, which is significantly up from 33 million units last year. As such, Monster Hunter has been a success worldwide. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate shipped more than four million copies when it released in the West this year for instance.

To further promote the series, Capcom has announced the Monster Hunter Fest 16 for next year which will head to five cities in Japan. There will also be an attraction called “Monster Hunter the Real” in Universal Studios Japan. Thoughts on the success of Monster Hunter thus far? Let us know in the comments.

Incredible numbers for Nintendo this week.

We have the newest numbers from Japanese tracking firm Media Create, numbers which tell us which systems and games did the best last week. On the whole, it seems as though the festive season has really gotten Japanese buyers to loosen their purse strings, since on the whole, everything seems to be doing well there. After a year of some depressingly low numbers all around, it’s good to see the Japanese market begin to resemble what it used to be in its heyday.

The 3DS is leading the hardware race, as per usual, with the Wii U having topped the charts on the console side. The PS4 and PS Vita haven’t done that poorly for themselves either, though they’re almost half individually of what the Wii U alone managed, and combined don’t even outsell the 3DS.

On the software side, Monster Hunter and Splatoon continue to impress, and new titles like Fallout 4 and Monster Strike have impressive debuts. You can check out the charts below:

3DS – 147,688
Wii U – 80,301
PlayStation 4 – 49,634
PlayStation Vita – 46,182
PlayStation 3 – 2,381
Xbox One – 446

And the software chart:

1. [3DS] Monster Strike – 425,268 / NEW
2. [3DS] Monster Hunter X – 159,806 / 2,267,916
3. [PS4] Fallout 4 – 121,099 / NEW
4. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch Busters – 99,190 / 1,860,532
5. [WIU] Super Mario Maker – 80,807 / 576,913
6. [WIU] Splatoon – 77,028 / 966,801
7. [3DS] Disney Magical World 2 – 43,331 / 203,262
8. [3DS] Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer – 40,896 / 1,222,487
9. [3DS] Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam – 38,962 / 119,091
10. [3DS] Rhythm Heaven: The Besgt Plus – 34,198 / 560,698
11. [PSV] Miracle Girls Festival – 33,580 / NEW
12. [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition – 27,159 / 431,229
13. [PSV] Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky – 21,534 / NEW
14. [3DS] Sumikko Gurashi Omise Hajimerun Desu – 21,491 / 60,673
15. [PS4] Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky – 19,728 / NEW
16. [PS3] JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven – 19,164 / NEW
17. [PS4] JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven – 18,516 / NEW
18. [PSV] Angelique Retour – 10,180 / NEW
19. [PSV] Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Ignition – 9,740 / NEW
20. [3DS] Cho Tousouchuu Atsumare Saikyou no Tousousya Tachi – 9,094 / 85,921

So, yup. There you have it.

The Japanese market saw the healthiest numbers it has in a while.

The newest batch of Media Create numbers for game hardware and software sales in Japan is out, and it looks like the 3DS is still ruling the country with an iron fist, with over 100,000 units sold over the last week, largely on the back of Monster Hunter X.

The PS4 and Wii U bring in second and third place on the hardware charts, with over 30,000 units sold each, reinvigorating the Japanese console market in the process. The PS Vita seems to be stuck in a rut, and the Xbox One is, as always, a no show.

The full hardware and software numbers follow:

Monster Hunter X – 3DS – 332,478

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam – 3DS – 49,266

Yo-kai Watch Busters – 3DS – 38,434

Splatoon – Wii U – 35,256

Super Mario Maker – Wii U – 32,155

Bloodborne: The Old Hunters Edition – PS4 – 20,455

Disney Magical World 2 – 3DS – 13,906

Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer – 3DS – 11,734

Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition – PS Vita – 11,179

Call of Dut: Black Ops III – PS4 – 11,092

Star Wars Battlefront – PS4 – 9,487

Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon – 3DS – 5,107

Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition – PS4 – 4,630

And here’s the hardware chart:

Nintendo 3DS – 103,009

PS4 – 35,782

Wii U – 32,604

PS Vita – 22,506

Xbox One – 289

The Wii U seems to be selling on the continued might of Splatoon, which doesn’t fail to surprise, and Super Mario Maker; the PS4, meanwhile, lacks any big seller, but its price cut seems to have made a positive impact on its sales baseline.

It can only be a good thing- the console market’s revival in Japan is something I have been anxiously waiting for for a long time now.

It's an action game spin off of the main franchise.

In a surprise announcement, Capcom announced the next entry in the Monster Hunter franchise- Monster Hunter X, which is a fast paced action game riff on the mainline Monster Hunter franchise. The game, which will feature and emphasize the kind of frame perfect action that is a hallmark of Capcom’s Devil May Cry series, will feature flashy animations, and hunters with different styles and specializations.

Monster Hunter X will be using the same engine that Monster Hunter 4 and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate used; it is set to be released in Japan by the end of this year. No western date was announced just yet, although, given just how successful the excellent Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate managed to be in the west, it is only a matter of time before Monster Hunter X comes over too.

Monster Hunter X is due out exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS. We will keep you posted, so stay tuned.
