Everything you need to know about Mordheim: City of the Damned

Mordheim: City of the Damned is an upcoming turn based strategy game with role playing game mechanics that is currently being developed by Rogue Factor, a development studio based in Montreal, Canada.

The game is based on an old school tabletop war game of strategy and battle that was first released by Games Workshop. Mordheim: City of the Damned is being published by Focus Home Interactive who recently published the retail build of The Wolf Among Us and Styx: Master of Shadows.

The game is currently available on Steam by way of their Early Access program so there’s no specific release date in place outside of a Q1 2015 window, but as of January this year, development has moved forward with the inclusion of new features. Early Access started on November 20th of 2014.

Development

The development of Mordheim: City of the Damned is ongoing and is partly influenced by player feedback thanks to the Early Access program.

Since launching the game on November 20th of 2014, the game has seen a series of updates that have improved its base performance, introduced new gameplay mechanics and even included a number of new factions.

At this point in development, there are four available factions for players to choose from. The current playable Factions include the likes of The Empire, Skaven, The Sisters of Sigmar and the Cult of the Possessed.

Despite being set in the universe and world of Games Workshop’s classic action strategy game Mordheim, Mordheim: City of the Damned features its own original storyline that hasn’t appeared in any other Games Workshop material.

Speaking about the game by way of the Early Access page, the developers have said, “The full version of the game will include 4 Warbands: the Human Mercenaries, the Skaven Clan Eshin, the Sisters of Sigmar and the Cult of the Possessed. Each of them will have their own campaign spread over two acts. Several multiplayer game modes will also allow competitive players to test their Warband’s strength and strategy skills, both in exhibition and hardcore skirmishes. The Sisters of Sigmar and the Cult of the Possessed Warbands, the whole progression system, the management features and campaign mode will be added to the game during the Early Access period. However, depending on your feedback, there may be changes to this plan.”

Story

Mordheim: City of the Damned is based of a tabletop game that often featured player made stories and scenarios, which was one of the main selling points. This game however features an original story set in the year 1999 of The Empire. There’s no king on the throne and thus chaos ensues as factions battle it out to claim Mordheim as their own.

Gameplay

The game is played from a third person perspective with players taking turns in moving their teams throughout the wreckage of the city as they manoeuvre units into position for both ranged and close combat attacks.

Units tend to have specific traits and characteristics that are somewhat accurate to the game, but these might see some changes before the game is released in full.

The game is aiming for a Q1 2015 release date, with the developers having said, “Our current goal is to release the game within the first quarter of 2015. We will constantly update the game with bug corrections and content patches during the Early Access period.”

The maps have some element of randomness to them with certain portions and aspects of the stage being procedurally generated. Upcoming features for the game include perma-death and injuries that will persist throughout the game. Injuries to the legs for example may limit movement distance or perhaps the unit’s ability to jump or climb.

The developers have also planned a campaign for the game, having said “Campaign with 2 Acts and 8 unique missions for each Warband (the 4 missions from Act1 will be progressively distributed during Early Access, the 4 missions from Act 2 will be available at release)”

There are even plans to introduce monsters that dwell in the recesses of Mordheim, which are expected to be without allegiance to any faction and will engage all parties.

Characters

The game is said to feature a set of characters that will have personalities and accompany you on your campaign. Currently the game makes use of 4 factions:

The Empire

The Sisters of Sigmar

The Skaven

Cult of the Possessed.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.

New faction allowing for a more interesting, disruptive style of play.

Rogue Factor’s turn-based tactical-RPG Mordheim: City of the Damned, based on Games Workshop’s tabletop game, is receiving a new, major content update today- its second one so far- as a fourth playable Warband, the Cult of the Possessed, becomes available now in game.

In order to celebrate this update, any player who decides to jump on board this game and enter its Early Access (yes, it is still in Early Access) from now through February 6 will get a 33% discount.

The Cult of the Possessed is, in the game’s universe’s lore, a group of degenerates and mutants gathered together seeking to gain the favour of the Shadowlord by returning the Wyrdstone to the Pit, slaughtering all those they find trespassing on their master’s domain. Mechanically, playing as one of them offers multiple new styles of play, as they get multiple passive skills and buffs and debuffs that can interrupt and distort other players in their vicinity.

Stay tune to GamingBolt for more coverage, and in the meanwhile, be sure to check out the new gameplay trailer above.

Turn based tactical RPG coming to PC.

Focus Home Interactive have announced that the popular classic Mordheim: City of the Damned will be coming to PC later this year, developed by Rogue Factory, as a turn based strategy role playing title that blends “RPG elements, fast-paced tactical combat and intricate unit customization.”

City of the Damned sees you recruiting new units and building your band of soldiers to fight your enemies, and as you go along, you get the ability to recruit more units, and upgrade and customize them to have better strategy- and as a result better results- on the battlefield.

The game, according to the devs, puts a great deal of emphasis on strategy and placing your units according to the environment of the battlefield, and if you, somehow, lose any units (or if any of them were to, say, lose a limb), they will be lost forever.

There’s no specific release date announced for the game yet, but stay tuned and we’ll keep you updated.
