Those promotions also benefited Mortal Kombat 1, as it re-entered the charts in third place. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate remained fourth, even with sales dropping by 27 percent. Another interesting re-entry is It Takes Two at 10th, thanks to a 52 percent sales increase.

As for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, it fell to fifth place with sales down by 36 percent. Other noteworthy re-entries include Mass Effect: Legendary Edition and Red Dead Redemption 2, though they only reached 21st and 22nd place instead of breaking into the top ten.

The video shows off scenes from the original Mortal Kombat, the more recent Mortal Kombat 11, the 1995 Mortal Kombat live action movie, and the reimagined movie from last year.

It also spotlights key characters from the Mortal Kombat roster from throughout the years, such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Jax, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, and Raiden, among any others.

As part of the celebration, Mortal Kombat Mobile will be getting Klassic movie Raiden until October 11, and will feature voice work by actor Christopher Lambert, who played Raiden in the 1995 movie.

While NetherRealm hasn’t made any official announcements regarding its next game, here are 11 things we want from a potential Mortal Kombat 12.

The lineup features the staples of the tournament for the past couple of years, such as Capcom’s Street Fighter 5, Bandai Namco developed Tekken 7, Arc System Works Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Granblue Fantasy Versus. What is interesting to note is that NetherRealm Studios-developed Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, which was originally removed from the lineup back in 2020, is making its comeback.

Apart from the above, Skullgirls 2nd Encore is making its comeback. SNK’s The King of Fighters 15 and Arc System Works Guilty Gear Strive are making their EVO debut as well.

Unfortunately, Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late [cl-r], which was announced to join the ranks back for EVO 2020, is not coming back, nor is the Marvel Vs Capcom 2 invitational tournament. However, the general manager of Evo, Rick Thiher, assures that they have something in the works for it very soon- check out his tweet down below.

Mortal Kombat Mobile has also been pretty well for the company with over 138 million downloads thus far. Series co-creator Ed Boon said that, “When Mortal Kombat launched nearly 30 years ago, I never dreamed it would grow into the franchise it is today with more than 73 million games sold. We have some of the most passionate fans in the world and we appreciate the support they have shown us over the years.”

Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate was the last major content update for the title, bringing support for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 along with Kombat Pack 2. The latter added Mileena, Rambo and Rain as new characters. NetherRealm has since ended support and moved on to its next project. No indication has been given as to what it could be but Boon noted that the developer has “other stuff in the oven.” Stay tuned in the coming months for any updates.

NetherRealm recently took to Twitter via the official Mortal Kombat page to confirm that all support for Mortal Kombat 11, including DLC and guest characters, has come to an end? The reason? Fans will be excited about this- NetherRealm Studios is now completely focused on its next project.

And what exactly is that going to be? That’s anyone’s best guess right now. Many will be hoping that Injustice 3 is in the works. Then again, maybe the developer is working on something completely new. Whatever it is, we can be sure that it’s going to be worth keeping an eye on.

Fighting game tournament Evo is making a comeback this year thanks to Sony, of all companies. In a press release, Sony and RTS (a new company formed from Endeavor’s esports division) announced the acquisition of Evolution Championship Series assets and properties. They also confirmed that Evo 2021 Online would take place this year from August 6th to 8th and August 13th to 15th.

Sony VP of global competitive gaming Steven Roberts said, “Fighting games have been a vital part of PlayStation’s legacy and our community since the very beginning, and we’ve been thrilled to partner with Evo over the years. This joint acquisition with RTS marks a new chapter of collaboration with Evo’s co-founders, Tom and Tony Cannon, and their passionate community of fighting game fans.”

The Cannon brothers will be involved as advisors to “ensure that Evo remains a one-of-a-kind, grassroots competitive platform for fighting game players and fans around the globe.” Tony Cannon stated that, “Tom and I are incredibly excited by the partnership with SIE and RTS. Both companies bring a wealth of experience and share our passion for what makes the fighting game community so great. We are looking forward to working with them to launch Evo to the next level while remaining true to our roots.”

Players from North America, Asia, Europe and Latin America can take part with titles like Guilty Gear Strive, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition, Tekken 7 and more being available. Online qualifiers will be live-streamed with more details to follow soon. Following the acquisition, Evolution Championship Series head of business development Mark Julio said that, “Evo is still open to all platforms. The teams at PlayStation and RTS are enabling us to continue working with our community to support fighting games.”

Evo had quite the troubling time last year from the COVID-19 pandemic cancelling live events to various scandals leading to the online event’s cancellation. With Sony and RTS in charge, this could provide a shot in the arm for the fighting game community. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.

It’s not especially odd to see competitors disqualified from gaming tournaments for one reason or another. But for Titaniumtigerzz, who took part in the Mortal Kombat 11 Pro Kompetition on January 16th, the reasoning is quite odd. According to the player, he was reportedly disqualified for criticizing developer NetherRealm Studios.

During his match, the feed suddenly cut to commentators Housam Cherif and Miguel Perez. The latter explained that, “Unfortunately, it looks like we have a little problem here, and someone is being…we got a situation. I don’t know what we can publicly say but we definitely have a situation here.” After confirming that Titaniumtigerzz’s opponent would be advancing, despite the match still technically going on, Perez said to “abide to the rules…everybody’s gotta be respectful,”

Apparently, the source of the criticism was a move-set variation for Sheeva named as “WhyDidNRSdoThis.” Titaniumtigerzz explained to Kotaku, “It was meant to be funny since the character I was using is basically extremely easy. The joke was, ‘Why would they make such an easy character?’” He was only informed about the disqualification once the match was over. No official reason was given but a tournament moderator reportedly told him that it was the variation’s name.

“They banned me in the very first match where I used the name. No opportunity [to change the name] was given and no one reached out to me. I’d have changed it instantly if I had been given the option.” Neither Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment nor NetherRealm Studios have offered an official statement on the same. Titaniumtigerzz is still set on playing in upcoming tournaments despite such setbacks.

Ever since the 2009 reboot of the series, Mortal Kombat has been leaning into movie crossovers. With Mortal Kombat 11, the latest in the franchise, we have a variety of different action film icons on the roster via DLC. However, it seems now the game wants to mine more movie nostalgia, this time from its own series.

Yesterday, we got a tease about Mortal Kombat film skins, and now we have them revealed. It’s a pack of different skins for Raiden, Sonya and Johnny Cage. If you’re unaware, in 1995 there was a film adaptation of the series that’s fondly remembered as one of the better video game to film translations (there was also a sequel, but…we don’t talk about that). This pack not only gives the likeness of the three actors who portrayed those characters but also their full voiceovers, too. Unfortunately, it is not part of the Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate re-release and will have to be purchased separately, but considering the amount of time that seemed to go into this, it’s understandable.

Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is available now on all major platforms. The Klassic Movie Skin Pack is also available to buy now. There is also a new film in production for the franchise, though it is currently on hold due to COVID.

Last year saw the release of the latest entry in the goriest fighting franchise out there, Mortal Kombat 11. The game has clearly been a huge success, and has gotten not one, but two, re-releases with Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate being the latest one. With that, we now have a roster of 37 characters, including some very high-profile guest characters, two story campaigns and a ton of skins and cosmetics. But support isn’t done yet, as the game is going to the movies soon.

On the official Twitter for the game, a tweet was sent out with a clear Hollywood-theme. This lead many to speculate that skins based on the 1995 film could be coming, and if you’re eagle-eyed you’ll noticed Raiden here has long hair like Christopher Lambert’s portrayal of the character in said film. To dispel any doubt of what’s being hinted out, series Creator Ed Boon also took to his official Twitter to loudly proclaim “MK movie skins!”

This actually won’t be the first time the game has dabbled in pseudo-crossover with the 1995 Mortal Kombat film. Shang Tsung is voiced by, and has the likeness of, the actor from that film, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. It’s not clear when these skins are coming or to what degree they will be done, but you can’t say that Mortal Kombat 11 hasn’t been supported very well.

NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is finally here. It packs the base game, Kombat Pack 1, the Aftermath expansion and the new Kombat Pack 2 which adds Rain, Mileena and Rambo to the game (along with their own unique skins, Fatalities and so on). Along with releasing on previous-gen platforms, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate marks the series’ debut on Xbox Series X/S and PS5. These versions offer improved visuals and run at dynamic 4K resolution with quicker loading times. Cross-platform, along with cross-gen, multiplayer is also included and previous-gen owners on PS4 and Xbox One can upgrade to the next-gen versions for free.

Those interested only in Kombat Pack 2 can upgrade their base version for just $14.99. Though it carries the “Ultimate” tagline, we don’t expect this to be the end of support for Mortal Kombat 11. So stay tuned for more details and possible leaks in the coming months.
