That’s what the developer’s own teases have strongly suggested, while recent leaks have also claimed that the game will indeed reset the clock, so to speak, and be called Mortal Kombat 1.

Alongside that, recently, journalist Jez Corden claimed that DC’s Peacemaker and The Boys’ Homelander will both be featured as post-launch DLC guest characters for the game, and speaking recently on the Xbox Two podcast, he followed up on that and revealed another potential guest character. According to Corden, Conan the Barbarian might also be included in Mortal Kombat 1’s character pass, though whether or not it’ll be Arnold Schwarzenegger’s version or the book version remains to be seen.

Leaks have claimed that Mortal Kombat 1 will be revealed in the coming days, so it’s possible that we’ll have more official details on the game in the near future. A PlayStation Showcase is allegedly set for the week of May 25, so that’s something Mortal Kombat fans will want to keep an eye on.

Corden states that the game indeed called Mortal Kombat 1 and is in development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and the Nintendo Switch, while also corroborating details on the three editions it will launch with and what their prices will be. It’s claimed once again that on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the Standard Edition will cost $70, while on the Switch, it will cost $60.

Corden goes on to say that Mortal Kombat 1 is likely to be revealed in the next “couple of weeks”, which aligns with his previous claims of a May announcement. Leaks have claimed that a PlayStation Showcase event is happening in the week of May 25, so that could be where the fighting game gets announced.

Interestingly, according to Corden, Mortal Kombat 1’s post-launch support will see DC’s Peacemaker and potentially The Boys’ Homelander being added to the roster as DLC, which is something he’s claimed previously as well.

As for when it will launch, the report claims Mortal Kombat 1 is targeting a September launch, although those plans “may be in a flux”.

WB Games officially confirmed earlier this this year that the next instalment in the series would be out in 2023, and developer NetherRealm Studios has also lately been dropping some cryptic teases that seem to be pointing to its announcement. Ahead of that, however, it seems some crucial details on the game have leaked out.

According to prominent leaker @billbil_kun on Twitter, the next Mortal Kombat game is going to be called Mortal Kombat 1, suggesting that it might be a reboot of the franchise. This would align with the game’s most recent tease as well, which showed a clock ticking from 11 and going straight to one, suggesting that after 2019’s Mortal Kombat 11, the series could be skipping a twelfth numbered instalment and instead reset the timeline.

Meanwhile, the leaker also claims that though Mortal Kombat 1 won’t be a cross-gen title, it will still launch on the Nintendo Switch, in spite of it skipping PS4 and Xbox One versions. The game’s Standard Edition will allegedly retail for $70 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and the regular $60 on Switch, while it will seemingly also launch with a $110 Premium Edition and a $250 Kollector’s Edition, with the latter being available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S only.

As for when the game will be officially announced, it seems that time is fast approaching. On top of NetherRealm Studios’ own teases, leaks have also claimed that the fighter will be announced sometime this month– which, incidentally, aligns with reports of a PlayStation Showcase in the week of May 25.

Time will tell, especially with reports of it being showcased this month and the PlayStation Showcase rumored for the week of May 25th .

While Mortal Kombat 12’s platforms, characters and release date haven’t been confirmed, one guest character is rumored. The final message in the video, from NetherRealm and Mortal Kombat boss Ed Boon, ends with him thanking fans for 30 years of support, and saying, “We’re not quite done yet.” Boon’s message is followed by a short cinematic tease that seems to be pointing at Mortal Kombat 12. Boon himself followed up on the tease on Twitter, prompting fans to check out the “not so subtle tease” of what’s next for the series.

Pro fighting game player SonicFox said he anticipates an “MK12 announcement” this week, with Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb following up (seemingly sarcastic) with, “I think they’re going to space.”

Jez Corden of Windows Central also joined in, stating, “In September!” Which is the same release month as Starfield. Even assuming that Grubb and Corden are joking around, it’s odd that SonicFox would randomly mention a Mortal Kombat 12 announcement for this week. As always, time will tell if this is true or not.

Platforms for the sequel aren’t confirmed, but Warner Bros. Discovery touted “ambitious launch projections.” Stay tuned for more details, hopefully, this week. Discovery. Executive vice president of global investor strategy Andrew Slabin revealed in the company’s Q4 2022 earnings call that the “highly-anticipated Mortal Kombat 12” would release this year alongside Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League with “ambitious launch projections.”

It’s definitely an anti-climactic announcement, but perhaps an official statement is coming soon. NetherRealm boss Ed Boon has teased the sequel several times, stating that the studio’s next project would either be Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 12. He also said last December that an announcement was “likely” within the next six months, so an E3 2023 appearance is possible.

If that weren’t enough, Boon said the studio’s next project would be its longest-supported title. Given that Mortal Kombat 11 received about one and a half years of support, it remains to be seen how the sequel will fare. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
