Fatalities have always been over-the-top but some just plain jump the shark.

As a series, Mortal Kombat has prided itself on its violence. The blood and gore is capped off with the Fatalities, brutal finishing moves which sees enemies ripped apart in glorious ways. Not every Fatality has exactly been that gruesomely awesome though. Some have been downright embarrassing, illogical or both. With Mortal Kombat 11 out this month, let’s take a closer look at some of the least flattering Fatalities throughout the series.

Head Inflate (Kabal) – Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3

In a way, this movie is kind of embarrassing for the opponent. Who likes to be filled with air until their head balloons up and they float away, only to explode in the sky? However, when you think about it, the Fatality itself is absurd. It’s almost too over-the-top and comedic, from the set-up to the underwhelming pay-off.

They tell you no one died but really, we know that can't be true.

Killing stuff in games is fun. Simply pressing a button and watching an entire fleet of baddies evaporate is just fun. And yet, there are some games that like to sort of “pretend” that some things are non-lethal. “No one really died!” they’re probably saying, somewhere in some fever dream. But we know the truth – we know just how lethal some attacks and abilities really are. Let’s take a look at 14 such examples here.

Pokemon – Self-Destruct, Hyper Beam, Etc.

Anyone who’s played Pokemon, even the first generation, will be familiar with attacks like Self-Destruct. You know, the one where your Pokemon explodes to damage and/or kill the enemy? It’s pretty metal but how in the world do the Pokemon just faint? Even if there is some logical explanation, how do all of these cataclysmic beam attacks result in Pokemon? Given how Gary’s Raticate died, we’re motivated to think that some of these attacks are killing Pokemon (even if that particular theory involves the Raticate not receiving medial attention in time).

Notice a slight change in difficulty? Dynamic difficulty is probably in effect.

Challenging video games aren’t a new phenomenon. Some of us appreciate a challenge, even if it means repeating a section over and over and over again. However, it’s not odd for an experience to get easier the more times we die. That’s because some games employ dynamic difficulty to help the player along, even if they don’t know it. What are a few occasions where you might have unintentionally made the game easier? Let’s take a look at 15 such games where that could have happened.

Crash Bandicoot 1

For all the flak that Crash Bandicoot gets about its difficulty, Naughty Dog weren’t complete sadists. If you die too many times, the game will begin removing environmental hazards and shifting checkpoints near obstacles to tip the scales in your favour. Bizarre? Sure but it’s the least egregious way to ensure players keep progressing.
