Available on February 22nd, 2023 with the next-gen headset, they run at 4K/90 FPS and benefit from the new controllers, eye tracking, and more.

Polyarc has announced that Moss and Moss: Book 2 will launch for PlayStation VR2 on February 22nd, 2023. They’re now available to pre-order, with PlayStation Plus subscribers receiving a 10 percent discount.

In a PlayStation Blog post, designer Doug Burton discusses how the next-gen VR headset improves both titles. Improved Haptics allow for feeling the impact of attacks, movement and various events happening nearby. The two Sense controllers feel more natural when manipulating the environment and interacting with Quill, and the Adaptive Triggers provide more weight and tension with objects.

For example, pressing the triggers provide some resistance, and going past that will result in pots and barrels breaking. Another neat feature is that interactive objects will glow when looked at, courtesy of the head-mounted display’s eye-tracking. It also shows Quill where your attention is, and she may provide hints if enough time has passed.

Moss and Moss: Book 2 will run at 4K/90 frames per second with a larger FOV and improvements to lighting and textures. Stay tuned for more details en route to their release.

Moss: Book 2, no longer exclusive to PSVR and the Meta Quest 2, is now available on Steam to be played on your VR headset of choice.

Sequel to critically-acclaimed VR game Moss, simply titled Moss: Book 2, is out now on Steam. Having originally been released on PlayStation VR, and coming to Meta Quest 2 earlier this year, Moss: Book 2 is now also available on PC.

With the game’s release on Steam, Moss: Book 2 can now be played on any VR headset that works with SteamVR, including Meta Rift, Meta Quest and Meta Quest 2 (through Quest Link), and HTC Vive, among other headsets.

Moss: Book 2 picks up right where its predecessor left things, and features more of the gameplay that made the original Moss beloved. Featuring a mix of gameplay and storytelling, Moss: Book 2 delves into the history, scenery, and characters of Moss.

“The Moss franchise has quickly become a ‘must-play’ for all VR users with its unique take on first-person/co-op game play, absolutely stunning environments, storytelling, and characters as rich as real life,” said lead designer at Polyarc Doug Burton. “Players have been asking for Steam support since we launched Book 2, and now we’re able to bring them the experience they’ve been patiently waiting for on their preferred headsets. And we can’t wait to hear what they think.”

Alongside the PC launch of Moss: Book 2, developer Polyarc has also started a campaign for Moss: Book 2‘s soundtrack’s entry for the new Grammy category “Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media”.

Polyarc's Brendan Walker says PSVR2's eye-tracking will allow developers to pririotize resources to improve performance and fidelity.

New details on the PSVR2 are beginning to trick through, though Sony has kept awfully quite about the next-gen VR headset by and large in recent months. That said, some of its most crucial specs have been revealed, and foveated rendering and eye-tracking have been lauded as some of the highlights there. As you’d expect, developers, too, are excited about what those features will enable behind the scenes.

Speaking recently with Play Magazine (via GamesRadar), Brendan Walker – principal engineer at VR developer Polyarc, the developer of the recently-released Moss: Book 2 – explained that on the current PSVR, game developers are “wasting a lot of rendering horsepower and putting detail where there actually doesn’t need to be as much” due to the lack of foveated rendering.

As Walker explains, the human eye can only focus on “a narrow window” in the visuals being rendered by the games, and with eye-tracking on the PSVR2, developers will be able to prioritize that. According to Walker, that, in turn, will “improve performance and increase fidelity.”

According to Walker, this will also increase the PSVR2’s longevity. He said: “It was smart of Sony to lean into this console because, you know, you have this hardware that hopefully is going to be around awhile. And in order to eke out as much lifetime out of it, you need to be able to optimize where you can.”

Of course, given that Sony hasn’t announced a launch window for the PSVR2, there’s no clarity yet on when users will be able to get their hands on the headset and experience its new games. Recent reports, however, have repeatedly suggested that it will launch sometime in 2023.
