Mossmouth's critically acclaimed compilation of 50 original retro-inspired titles from multiple developers launched last year on PC.

While it didn’t have a tremendous presence at today’s Indie World Showcase, Mossmouth’s UFO 50 has been announced for Nintendo Switch. Even better is the fact that it’s out now for the console. Check out the launch trailer below.

Released last year for PC, UFO 50 is a collection of 50 retro-style video games across various genres from multiple developers (though in-game, they’re the output of the fictional UFO Soft). Some titles are fairly straightforward, like the platformer Barbuta and arcade racer Paint Chase, while others, including Magic Garden, are surprisingly addictive.

However, some have hefty playtimes, including Grimstone, a Wild West-themed role-playing game, and Party House, a deckbuilding strategy game. On top of earning special collectibles by completing each title, players will discover clues providing a closer look at the history of UFO Soft. Those ingenious enough may even find the hidden 51st title.

UFO 50 has earned universal acclaim from critics and players, and even earned a place on our 20 Greatest PC Games of 2024 and 30 Amazing PC Games of All Time lists.

Players can now play online with friends or randoms in Adventure Mode or Arena Mode across PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC.

If you’re hopelessly addicted to Spelunky 2 and can’t stop diving deep into its procedurally generated depths (and let’s face it, chances are you very well may be), there’s good news for you. Developer Derek Yu has confirmed that with its newest update, Spelunky 2 has added cross-platform multiplayer.

Players can now play online with friends or randoms in Adventure or Arena Mode across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Yu says that with this update, all of Spelunky 2’s major multiplayer goals have been met- though the developer will continue to look at feedback from players to make necessary updates and changes.

That said, you shouldn’t expect any new single player content for now, with the focus being squarely on the game’s multiplayer experience. “Our focus will continue to be on multiplayer and online,” Yu writes. “That’s a personal preference for me as a creator, to try and preserve the single player experience as much as possible after release. Of course, fixing bugs and any game-breaking problems is still on the table (although “game-breaking” is open to interpretation haha).”

You can also check out the patch notes for update 1.26 below.

Spelunky 2 is available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Switch players can now dive into the depths (again and again) in Mossmoth's beloved roguelike games, Spelunky and Spelunky 2.

Mossmouth’s duo of beloved roguelike platformers Spelunky and Spelunky 2 was announced for the Nintendo Switch year, and the two games have now arrived for the system. Check out their launch trailer below to get a glimpse of what’s in store for you.

Spelunky costs $9.99, while its sequel costs $19.99. The Switch has been a haven for indie for a while now, so the lack of Spelunky on the platform always felt a little strange, given how huge the roguelike is in the indie space in particular. To have the game and its sequel is great, because it also gives plenty of newcomers to dive in.

Spelunky 2 first launched last year for PS4 and PC. In our review of the game, we awarded it a score of 8/10, saying, “If you loved the original, you’re going to love Spelunky 2, and find it equal to its predecessor in all ways except one- where the original was a trail blazer, the new game seems content to, much like it asks of its players, simply plumb into familiar depths.” You can read our full review through here.

Though an official announcement hasn't yet been made, an update to the two games' Australian eShop pages suggest they're launching later this month.

It was announced last year that the beloved roguelike platformers Spelunky and its sequel were finally making their way to the Nintendo Switch. At the time of that announcement, it was only said that they’d be arriving some time in Summer of 2021, but now it seems we might have an exact release date as well.

As spotted by Vooks, the Australian eShop pages of both Spelunky and Spelunky 2 were recently updated, with an exact release date being added. Apparently, both games are launching for the Switch on August 26, two weeks from now. The update coming out of nowhere, is definitely surprising, especially seeing as we just got an Indie World presentation yesterday. You’d figure that would be the perfect place to announce the release dates for the duo.

Of course, an official announcement hasn’t yet been made by Mossmouth or Nintendo, but unless this eShop update was made in error (which seems unlikely), that announcement will likely be coming soon. Stay tuned, and we’ll keep you updated.

Mossmouth is still looking to fix issues, like the recent problem with invites.

Though it launched with a fair amount of critical acclaim, Spelunky 2 has had its fair share of problems this year. Its online multiplayer faced issues on PS4 and was subsequently delayed for the PC launch. Mossmouth has now confirmed that online play is in open beta on PC.

Unfortunately, while matchmaking is working, inviting friends has been problematic. According to the developer, “This did not come up at all during the closed beta, and we suspected that the addition of multiple servers in preparation for the (much larger, more global) public beta might be related to the issue.” A recent patch has helped sort the issue for a number of players but Mossmouth is still working on fixing any other issues that crop up for the time being.

In the first half of 2021, it will enable cross-platform play between the PS4 and PC versions. The Arena mode will also be tweaked while the invite system also receives some changes (though that will be for later next year). Mossmouth is also working to bring Spelunky and Spelunky 2 to Nintendo Switch in Summer 2021 so it should be interesting to see if online multiplayer is sorted by then.

The classic roguelite platformers are finally coming to Switch.

Mossmouth has announced that Spelunky and Spelunky 2 will be releasing for Nintendo Switch. Both titles are coming to the platform in Summer 2021. Check out the trailer below which showcases them in action.

While Spelunky is about 12 years old at this point with its original release, Spelunky 2 launched a few months ago for PS4 and then PC. The first game set the bar for roguelite platforming and difficulty with its numerous permutations and challenges. Local co-op, Deathmatch and Daily Challenge make their way to the Switch version along with 20 different explorers. Check out our review of the Xbox 360 version here.

Spelunky 2 makes big strides in terms of its level generation, mechanics and challenges. It introduces fluid dynamics (which works wonders with lava), mounts and other crazy new features. Again, the Switch version will support all of this along with four player local play and Arena mode. For more details on the PS4 version, check out our review here.

Though Mossmouth launched Spelunky 2 on PC without multiplayer, it’s planning to add it in early December. In a recent update on Steam, the developer said that two of its three “major improvements” that were planned are complete. It also outlined the reasons for its delay, including how serious some of the issues with PS4 multiplayer were.

To that end, the developer has made “deeper changes” to the internal game logic and rollback “to get it to where we want it to be.” Such changes required extensive testing in order to prevent more issues. In the meantime, Mossmouth is also addressing feedback, like when it tweaked the beginning areas to be less difficult.

It also noted that, “In the end, all of this work is going toward the same place, because Spelunky 2 is a game where the different modes and systems are all very interconnected. So rest assured that anything we’re doing, whether it’s for PS4 or Steam, single-player or multiplayer, local or online, will improve some aspect of the game that you’re interested in!”

Spelunky 2 is currently available for PS4 and PC. Thus far, Mossmouth hasn’t said anything about bringing it to other platforms like Xbox One or even Nintendo Switch. Stay tuned for more updates in the meantime, including a release date for online multiplayer on PC.
Changes for spawn rates of enemies and traps in World 1-1 and 1-2 are currently being tested.

If you’ve played the original Spelunky, it should come as no surprise that Spelunky 2 is tough. However, the first game was praised for easing players in, ramping the difficulty up in a way that felt right. With Mossmouth’s sequel, it feels like the first area, Dwelling, is much tougher than it should be.

Creator Derek Yu acknowledged this and in a new post on Steam, he talked about changes that are being tested. These affect the “spawn rates of enemies and traps, particularly in 1-1 and 1-2.” World 1-4 is also seeing some changes to make it “more interesting” and players can expect these changes in an upcoming patch. Yu also noted that instead of trying to kill everything in Dwelling, it’s better for players to either avoid them, “let them kill each other or trigger traps for you.”

Yu also addressed a complaint that some had for a section in Volcana. While the developer will look into it, he couldn’t confirm if it would actually be addressed. “In general, we have to be somewhat careful about how we go about changing the game based on player feedback. Ultimately, Spelunky is a game that is designed to have some sharp edges in it, and there’s always the risk of removing fun along with the frustration.”

Spelunky 2 is currently available for PS4 and PC. You can read more about it in our review here.

Steam users can finally get their hands on the roguelike platformer.

The long-awaited roguelike platformer Spelunky 2 is out now on PC via Steam. It launches without online multiplayer (since Mossmouth needed more time to iron out issues) but still offers a compelling experience. You can check out our thoughts on it here.

Spelunky 2 follows Ana, who’s mother and father have ventured to the Moon to comb its depths and gone missing. Much like the first game, the walls keep shifting, resulting in a different layout each time. Along with major changes to vendors, ghosts and whatnot, the sequel offers hidden layers in each level to explore.

There are also alternate paths, new traps and enemies, mounts, and new liquid physics, which means that lava can flow freely and murder you pretty quickly. Between runs, players can upgrade their base camp and hang out with any unlocked characters. Mossmouth has also teased “deeper mysteries” that the community has to solve together but we’ll see how that manifests in the coming weeks. Stay tuned in the meantime.

Mossmouth is still testing the mode and making improvements.

Mossmouth’s Spelunky 2 is available now on PS4 and quite good based on reviews. However, its multiplayer has faced several issues till now. Because of this “bit of a rocky start”, the developer has announced that the roguelite platformer’s PC version won’t launch with multiplayer.

Over on Steam, Mossmouth stated that it prioritized an earlier release “so that Steam players could enjoy the game ASAP.” This means multiplayer won’t be available and the “Online Co-op” tag has since been removed from the game’s Steam listing. The developer apologized for disappointing players and said that, “Until very recently we were still hoping that we would be able to launch with it as planned.”

Spelunky 2 was slated to launch after the PS4 version so that the developer could iron out any issues with multiplayer. Given the number of issues that have since cropped up, the mode’s delay seems a given (though it’s still being tested and improved upon). The good news is that the additional time will help in implementing cross-platform play between PC and PS4, which should “take a few weeks at most to get online.”

Spelunky 2 is out today for PC. Check out our review of the game here.
