Ok, no, Microsoft didn’t REALLY say that. But do you remember how we told you Kinect will understand sign language? Yeah, well, it won’t.

The patent which revealed the said information on Microsoft’s motion sensing camera, Kinect, was not supposed to be “brought to the market right away.” So for the time being, Kinect won’t be able to understand sign languagem according to MS.

They told Kotaku: “Microsoft files lots of patent applications to protect our intellectual property, not all of which are brought to market right away. Kinect that is shipping this holiday will not support sign language.”

Kotaku says it’s all because of the camera’s resolution. The original Kinect model had high resolution, so it may have had the ability to understand ASL (American Sign Language), but the newer model, the one that will be sold in stores, has a lower resolution, and will not be able to detect individual fingers and limbs.

“Patents are about protecting inventions and their uses – it doesn’t follow that everything you read in the patent will make its way into the final shipping device,” says Richard Leadbetter.

“Patent applications need to be far-reaching enough to cover not only current technology but also subsequent evolutions of it, or spin-off ideas based on the same fundamental concepts. “Sign language recognition is a step beyond the final shipping device – the resolution just isn’t there – but then the application also talks about connecting the camera to a PC and that’s not going to happen in the short term either. Both of these scenarios are simply possibilities for utilisation of the sensor.”

So… I guess Kinect sucks again.

Paul Wedgewood, boss of Splash Damage, says he thinks shooters on the Move and Kinect have a lot of potential. While talking to ComputerAndVideoGames.com, the Brink developer stated that he he thought shooters could be done very well on the upcoming motion sensors on the HD consoles.

“I think these motion controllers have amazing potential for shooters, but perhaps not in the way people might immediately think (i.e. controlling motion),” Wedgwood told CVG.

“Perhaps we’ll think about that in the future, but we don’t have any plans for implementation in Brink.”

CVG speculated Wedgewood could be hinting at using Brink’s SMART system. When asked about the said system, Wedgewood said, “The idea is really straightforward. When you’re in combat and you want to get somewhere in the game world, you hold down your SMART button (which doubles as a sprint button) and it will help with jumps, vaults, mantling, sliding, and so on, allowing you to easily navigate any obstacles in your path.”

GAME and HMV will be demoing Microsoft’s all new motion sensor, Kinect in-store to please the UK public.

“The key to Kinect and to getting customers is obviously all about demonstration,” head of UK PR for Game, Neil Ashurst said.

“So at the moment our focus is looking at ways of doing that. Beyond that we don’t have any specific details at present.”

Microsft will also have Kinect on display in a select few US stores for the benefit of the public.

Keep checking GamingBolt for more news. And do tell us if you think you’ll look like noobs while playing with Kinect.

Square Enix global boss Yoichi Wada says that Microsoft’s motion sensor, Kinect is “just a small extension to what is already available” in the games industry. He believes the next industry-changing technology will be come online with the improvement in console network services.

He also said that 3D as well is not anything ground breaking, just “so-so.” He feels that Sony’s E3 showing could have had a huge impact in the future, but “will not have any effect” in short-term.

He says that Nintendo’s, Sony’s and Microsoft’s E3’s main discussion points, the 3DS, 3D and Kinect were “not the kind of technology that will definitively change the industry itself” and were “only an extension of the existing trajectory, if you will.”

“With game console input, Nintendo’s DS and Wii had a dramatic effect,” he added. “What was announced with Kinect is just a small extension to what is already available.

“So it has also reached a point where something different has to happen for next level disruptive technology.

“Unless Kinect becomes the interface like the one we have seen in Minority Report or it becomes so advanced that it reads brain waves, technology has jumped so much already we can’t think of anything more that can be added to that.”

Everybody’s going a little harsh on Kinect, don’t you think? We should at least give it a chance… or should we?

Microsoft’s motion sensor, Kinect, was rumoured to be priced at $149, and the Microsoft Store confirms this. Retailers though, it seems, are not happy with this price. They say Kinect should be priced at below $100 if it is to appeal to the masses, compete with the Move, and sell as much as Microsoft expects it to.

Retailers have been forced to take all Kinect units for a price of over $100 for now.

“Sub-$100 and Kinect will benefit immensely,” Morrison’s games buyer Nick Sultanti told Develop.

“People are going to compare price points between Move and Kinect and it would be fairly detrimental if there is a major price discrepancy in favour of Move.”

ShopTo boss Igor Cipolletta added: “Predictions of Kinect price being over $79.99 will do little to engender early adopters and thus affect unit sales in the short to medium term.”

So, will you buy the Kinect if it’s over $100? Tell us what you think in your comments!

In an interview with ComputerAndVideoGames.com, Sega told us they will be releasing a “sophisticated” game for the Kinect, which will take full advantage of the motion sensor’s capabilities, and will be released by 2011 end or 2012 beginning.

“I think [the idea that the Kinect launch let the hardcore down] is a little harsh,” Sega West president Mike Hayes said. “The dev kits we’ve had to work on have been exponentially improving over the period we’ve had them. The amount you can do out of the blocks is actually made pretty tricky.

“My guess is when we’re at E3 next year, more of the features of Kinect will be in use by developers. I think you’ll find more clever and sophisticated applications then. It is a reasonably complicated piece of kit, therefore it’s going to take us longer to use all of those aspects in a game. We’re not going to be able to develop something [for the hardcore] in under a year, which is frankly what we’ve had.

“As developers, we understand that. [PlayStation] Move is probably slightly different because we’ve been involved with that kind of motion control with Wii and to be honest what we did with EyeToy etc. before, so it’s probably easier for Sony to show and deliver more right now.

He added: “We want to do more clever things on it – create original ways of using it, rather than just taking existing ideas and not just doing the same thing. Having said that, of course, with the success that we’ve had with Wii, there are a lot of motion games we would like to reinvent for Move and Kinect.

“We’ve got a tech group based in England, in Southall [Middlesex]. We took them from the Racing Studio when we closed that as it was actually a very good team – we just couldn’t find something for them to do. They’re sat with their test tubes and bunsen burners and that’s exactly what they’re doing – using the new devices to see what we can do in an original way.

“We’ve got one good idea and hopefully something will be out the back end of next year, perhaps early 2012, which we think will use the aspects of Kinect a lot more originally and in a more sophisticated way.”

Looks like we might just get a game that might be able to make Kinect a thing worth buying- something that the Xbox 360’s motion sensor hasn’t esablished itself as yet.

Watch this space for more information on Kinect.

So any hype that MS might have killed for the Kinectimals last night, they seem to have rebulit. They showed off Kinectimals, which seems to be a super interactive version of Nintendogs. A little girl came on-stage and played with her “pet” Tiger named Skittles. She made him act dead, jump around, and fetch toys.

Then there was Kinect Sports, which, you guessed it, is Kinect’s Wii Sports. They showed off a foot race, which requires to run on the spot, and as the executive put it, ‘puts you truly in the game.’ The demo includes sports like foot races, boxing, javelin throw, table tennis and more.

Joyride was next. Using body movements as analogs for car movement, the game showed a three lap race that appeared fun yet exhausting overall. Seems to have five unique gameplay modes, including a stunt mode.

Now we have Kinect Adventures, which is a journey that ‘requires your entire body to play.’ The game is, quite literally, on rails, which requires you to bend, crouch etc to collect points while travelling through a variety of exotic locales, all the while dodging obstacles. Looks fun.

Oh, and now we have a Ubi title for the Kinect, which looks to be Wii Fit meets Wii Sports. Or something like that. It’s called Your Shape: Fitness Evolved. Sounds somewhat familiar. The game though, doesn’t look very interesting. Combat training is kickass, though.

Oh, looks like Nintendo raided the MS conference. A Wii Music- oh, sorry, a Harmonix title next- Dance Central…. the name says it all. Basically, it involves you jumping around, flailing your arms like crazy, trying to make you ‘dance to the music.’

All in all, the last two games certainly killed off the hype developed by the first four, which were pretty good. Kinect looks decent overall, although a bit tiring, especially for fat guys like me. Your thoughts? Tell us in the comments section below.

UPDATE: Kinect will launch on 14th November in North America, with fifteen launch titles. Still no word on its pricing.
