It probably would've been more comfortable without the Gatorade label, but we doubt it.

NBA 2K13, developed by the kind folks at 2K Sports, finally has it’s launch trailer as it heads to the Wii U with a hefty amount of fan-fare. After all, the game itself is a pretty evolution on the original, with 4000 animations and improved ball control. That’s not included MyCAREER mode which brings forth detailed analysis and stat-tracking.

But like all Wii U adaptations, this one has it’s share of gimmicks. Gimmicks would probably be the wrong word, but it is what it is. How else does one explain the Gatorade Biometrics Scanner with a straight face?

Besides using the Wii U Gamepad to make substitutions and plays on the fly, you can also use the Gamepad as an AR reader to see the various states of exhaustion of the players. It can also be used to detect various hot spots, where the activity of the court is highest, and plan accordingly. It looks weirder than it sounds. Check it out above.

Plus Gatorade product placement.

2K Sports and Visual Concepts have done what they can do for the PS3 and Xbox 360 release for NBA 2K13, produced by famous rapper Jay-Z, and now they’re looking towards the Wii U for further gameplay possibilities in the newest developer insight.

Interestingly, producer Ben Bishop talks about how the Wii U edition will have all the gameplay features and aspects from the main console releases. You can still customize teams and players, along with jerseys and other outfit options. There’s also the extremely odd Gatorade Biometric Scanner which utilizes the Wii U Gamepad as a scanner, with which you can look at player’s fatigue levels, and whether they are “hot and cold” along with other bodily functions.

Yeah. Seriously.

The Gamepad is also used in Career Mode, dedicated to whatever your player and helps in finding “hot and cold” spots. We wish we were making this up but check out the video for yourself if you don’t believe us.

Same pattern as before when it comes to sales.

Dishonored managed to chart in the October 2012 NPD charts. With that out of the way, NBA 2K13 topped it and in the hardware section the Xbox 360 took a 56% share again and was the top selling console for the month, moving 270k units.

PS3 did under 200k, the Wii outsold the PS Vita, so did the 3DS, and why doesn’t NPD give accurate numbers again? This guess work is so inefficient. However, we do have a ton of info thanks to the press releases and what not.

“While we saw declines in hardware unit sales across all platforms year-over-year, when looking at average sales per week versus September, several consoles realized higher sales: the 360, PS3, NDS and 3DS. This is a sign of increasing momentum as we move into the holiday season,” said NPD’s Liam Callahan.

The industry saw a 25% drop in the amount of revenue generated to $755.55 million, as software sank 25 percent to $451.8 million, while hardware plummeted 37 percent to $187.3 million.

“Unfortunately, other sequels new to market this month did not perform as well compared to prior iterations. This, combined with poor comps against the launch of hits like Battlefield 3 and Batman: Arkham City in October 2011 led to the decline in software sales,” he said.

“While October was another month of steep declines in retail sales, we are looking forward to November 2012 with the results of Assassin’s Creed III, and Halo 4, which were positively reviewed, as well as the results of Call of Duty: Black Ops II. These software titles, along with the Wii U launch on November 18, will provide a much needed boost to retail sales.”

Software charts via Neogaf.

Mobile functionality works as intended.

NBA 2K13 developer diary tells us more about the game and features the game developers talking about the various things they have added to the game.

It’s related to mobile devices and you don’t even have to sit near your console to level up your characters. The app is called MyNBA2K.

“With more than 5 million copies sold worldwide and more than 25 Sports Game of the Year awards won, NBA 2K12 was another monster release for the biggest NBA video game simulation franchise in the world,” reads the description.

“This year, 2K Sports has joined forces with the legendary JAY Z as Executive Producer to transcend sports video games and take virtual hardwood to the next level. Featuring an enhanced MyCAREER mode and all-new gameplay features, NBA 2K13 will let gamers pit the best players in NBA history against the new dynasty of talent, including the much-debated matchup between the 2012 U.S. Men’s National Team and the 1992 “Dream Team.””

66% increase in international sales

2K has released plenty of first week figures for their recently released basketball sim, NBA 2K13, and apparently, it has broken plenty of the records that were set by NBA 2K11 two years ago.

For starters, 2K13 has sold through 49% more copies than 2K11 did at launch, and sales in nations other than the US have increased by 66%.

Even the online community has grown way more active, with the total number of games played having gone up 127% over last year’s NBA 2K12.

“Our early sales figures are a validation of our ongoing efforts to push this franchise to new heights,” said Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. “We owe it to our great fans to continually improve our title – year in and year out – and that’s exactly what we’ve done with NBA 2K13.”

NBA 2K13 is now out for the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii and PSP across the world, and will be releasing on the Wii U next month. Stay tuned for more info.

Because forget gameplay changes.

The 2K Sports team talk about the different shoes within NBA 2K13 in their latest developer insight. Yes, shoes. The “sole” of the sport. But hey, Jay-Z ya’ll. Or something.

Much as we protest the pointlessness, sports games, especially the yearly ones, are not only judged by new features they implement but by the realism they instil in the experience. This means, for better or worse, paying extensive attention to brands and player apparel like jerseys and shoes. At times it means extensive attention to the same. Thankfully, there are enough gameplay additions here as well.

Along with creating new features and improving the controls, not to mention improving the graphics and adding over 4000 character animations to further improve the realism of the 2K Sports game.

Another interesting feature is the new mode called MyCAREER mode, with producer Erick Boenisch talking about “focusing on your player’s life both on and off the court”
