Of course, we’re not just talking about a single loading screen that stretches for too long. This can also apply to a game that simply bombards you with loading screens at every turn, adding up to an experience that’s more loading than actual gameplay. Let’s take a look at 15 such games that are notorious for this. And remember: They may or may not have been patched since release so beware.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3

One of the most recent examples of horrid loading times is CI Games’ Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3. The game was criticized for taking an inordinate amount of time to even load the first level. Eurogamer showcased how it’s possible to complete one race in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, some speedruns in Gone Home and  casual Pokemon GO in the time it takes to load one level in Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3.

As is the case with most sports games, the development and marketing teams pick a cover athlete to be on the box. This year, the regular version of NBA 2K17 is featuring Paul George but there is another version that features Kobe Bryant, who retired at the end of last year. Bryant is featured on the Legend Edition of the game.

The game’s soundtrack has long been a point of pride with the developers of the title, who look to put some of the most popular songs in the world onto each iteration. In NBA 2K17 there are more than 50 new songs on the soundtrack and they are being curated by artists like Grimes, Imagine Dragons, and Noah Shebib.

Development

NBA 2K17 was officially announced on April 13, 2016. The game was revealed with a new trailer. Aside from the regular edition, a ‘Legend Edition’ of the game was made to be available for players to purchase. The Legend Edition of the title features Kobe Bryant as the cover athlete and comes with several different physical and digital bonuses, such as a poster and Virtual Currency which can be used to purchase different boosts in various modes. The standard edition cover art for the game, featuring Paul George of the Indiana Pacers, was unveiled in June 2016. The developers say George was chosen to be the NBA 2K17 cover athlete because he is known as a rather devoted player of the NBA 2K series.

The development team also gave other players the cover in different countries. This was reportedly done in order to appeal to a broader audience.  In Italy, the development team picked the cover athlete to be Danilo Gallinari of the Denver Nuggets. In Spain, the cover athlete is Pau Gasol of the San Antonio Spurs. Both of those players were born in those countries and had a career in those countries before moving to the NBA.

One of the biggest changes the development team says it made in NBA 2K17 compared to other versions in the series is the in-game sounds. The team says it wasn’t happy with the way the game sounded, especially in NBA 2K16 version. The the development team went to every NBA team’s stadium and made recording of the crowd and what was happening on the court. Visual Concepts believes they have managed to make the game that much more realistic.

Story

While there isn’t a specific story that unfolds during several of the game modes in NBA 2K17, there is one mode, the MyCareer aspect of the game that does have specific scripted moments. The point of this mode is to make users feel as though they really are going through a career in the NBA. This means more than simply putting up as many big stats as possible.

The MyCareer mode brings episodes where the player has to interact with various people and places that are meant to show what life is like for a rookie when they have just started out in the NBA. This includes making decisions that are geared towards affecting popularity and other aspects of off the court behavior.

There is also a smaller kind of story running through the MyGM mode. When players decide they want to build a dynasty instead of play in one, they take on the role of a general manager. During the seasons as the GM of a player’s favorite team, the player will have some interactions with the owner of the team, as well as players and coaches. There will also be some interactions with the media after games. Answers chosen will affect how a player’s team and career will progress.

Gameplay

NBA 2K17 has a number of different modes that are all played from a third person point of view. MyCareer has players take on the role of a rookie NBA player. The users must then guide the player through a career in the league. The Prelude is a part of MyCareer where users first build the legend of the player they are stepping into the shoes of. In this mode, players play a few college games in order to build up the ratings of the NBA player.

MyGM allows players to take over the front office of any NBA team a user would want. Users can control almost any aspect of the construction of a franchise. This gameplay mode is only available for the current generation consoles. The Association is a scaled down version of MyGM that is only available on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

USA Basketball allows players to take control of the USA Team and play alongside some of the country’s best players and Coach K. Users can also replay the first Dream Team season from back in 1992. PRO-AM is an online mode that allows players to build their own “fantasy draft” team. MyLEAGUE is primarily an online multiplayer game where users can create leagues and have their friends join. They can then go uop against each other in online head-to-head games.

MyTeam is another mode that allows you to use Dynamic Duos, limited-use Free Agent Cards, and a newly revamped 3-on-3 mode with a abrand new player selection process. Blactops allows players to play a kind of street-basketball mode where users can take on other users in 1v1, 3v3, and 5v5 online games.

Teams

All of the teams in NBA 2K17 are the teams that are in the real NBA. There are also select European league teams as well as a select number of college basketball teams. This game offers a brand new feature as well that allows users to insert expansion teams. The game allows users to create up to 4 expansion teams in a league.

The PS4 Pro will definitely not be capable enough to render most games in native 4K- that’s why Sony are employing the ingenious Checkerboard upscaling technique. That said, it does seem to have enough grunt to still be able to run some games in native 4K- we know that The Last of Us Remastered will be one of them, but it looks like a true current generation game will manage it too.

The NBA 2K17 developers have confirmed on Twitter that the game will run in native 4K output on the PlayStation 4 Pro. Not only that, it will maintain a full 60FPS while doing so, too, and also support HDR output. That’s not all, either- NBA 2K17 will output in 4K even if you are playing it on a 1080p HDTV, so that the image quality will noticeably improve, no matter what. Most notably, the developers are promising that 4K rendering, alongside HDR, should lead to softer and better aliasing.

So, this is one technical win for Sony and for 2K Games. NBA 2K17 is out now on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

MyCareer mode returns in 2K17 and it’s better than ever. For those who are unaware, the MyCareer mode is actually a story mode wherein you can scan your face using a companion app (although the results of the scan could range from downright funny to perfect). You take on the role of a high school player as you rise to the top while grabbing endorsement deals along the way. You are also given access to a cell phone where you can talk to different team members, coaches or hangout with friends. Initially, the story mode might feel a bit mundane but once you get the hang of the daily decision making, the experience becomes much more immersive. Unfortunately you cannot skip through the story cutscenes so this may annoy some players who want to avoid the plot-lines and jump directly into the action. Regardless of this minor issue, the MyCareer mode feels so much better than what was present in last year’s iteration and it’s a complete blast once you start investing your time into it.

Players can now easily chain moves and pull of breathtaking maneuvers helping you easily dodge the opposing team’s defenders. However the experience can be dragged down due to some uneven passing mechanics due to the AI of players who still don’t run on the right lane at times. However despite this minor annoyance, it seems that Visual Concepts have fixed some of the annoying bugs from the previous games. When you pass the ball to an AI standing close to the boundary, the said AI won’t tip over the boundary. This was something that had marred previous entries so this is a welcome change. Further improvements include the way the ‘green’ indicator or a successful shot works. In the past “green” does not always guarantee a successful shot, however this has been fixed in the latest installment.

MyGM mode has also been updated as for the first time ever the game allows you to select six new franchises that can be added to the Association. You can auto-design their logos and uniforms or design everything manually. The draft rules seem to be on the spot as each team can protect eight players. However you will only lose a set number of players which in turn is independent of how many teams are selecting. Online play seems solid and the servers are holding up reasonably well so far. We experienced minimal lag while playing the MyPark and MyTeam but overall the online experience is drastically better than last year’s iteration which was broken for several days after launch.

One of the things that the NBA series has always excelled in is its pristine presentation and NBA 2K17 continues the trend. Facial scan of players look amazing and the attention to detail could be quite stunning at times. On the field, the animations and individual player’s body flow look realistic and better than ever before. The TV crew includes the likes of Brent Barry, Kevin Harlan, Greg Anthony, Clark Kellogg, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Steve Smith and David Aldridge. In short you won’t get a better crew than this in any sports game.

Visual Concepts went through 29 NBA arenas and recorded their iconic music scores and crowd sounds. I guess it’s safe to assume that NBA 2K17 feels more lively compared to its predecessors. Player specific dialogues with their real voices and faces scanned with great amount of detail further amps up the immersion factor. The user interface has been overhauled as well…there are new overlays and scoreboards, and intriguing half time entertainment sections that make you feel like you are actually watching the game in real-life. In short, Visual Concepts have really taken the game’s presentation to an all together different level with its excellent graphics and adrenaline soaked soundtrack.

Overall, NBA 2K17 follows the good old mantra…“if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The game builds on an already existing and fantastic framework and if you are already a fan NBA 2K17 is game you need to play. It may not be accessible to new comers but that does not stop it from becoming one of the best basketball games of all time. Too many cutscenes in the MyCareer mode and the game’s inability to hold your hand at times may rarely deter your experience but its refreshingly deep gameplay mechanics and tons of different modes make it stand out as one of the best sports games you will play this year.

ReCore

Keiji Inafune and his team at Comcept haven’t exactly had the best year so far with Mighty No. 9 flopping miserably. However, with former Bungie writer Joseph Staten and Armature Studio aboard on ReCore, it’s hard to not get excited about this futuristic platformer/shooter. If anything, ReCore feels like a proper spiritual successor to the Mega Man legacy (namely Mega Man Legends). Time will tell if the $40 title, priced for the “value” it offers, will actually set our collective hearts aflutter when it releases on September 13th for Xbox One and Windows 10.

FIFA 17

You can’t fault EA for trying new things with its FIFA franchise. Each iteration has a number of different improvements and enhancements and this year’s FIFA 17 is no different. However, along with additions to Ultimate Team, FIFA 17 will also include Journey mode. This story-based campaign will follow footballer Alex Hunter from the amateur level all the way up to the Premier League. It’s out on September 27th for North America and September 29th in Europe for previous and current gen platforms.

Forza Horizon 3

Speaking of trying something new, Playground Games is stressing connectivity with Forza Horizon 3. The open world racing game will head to Australia, presenting a large and beautiful outback to explore along with four player co-op support. The twist is that players can join in regardless of being on Windows 10 or Xbox One. Co-op joining is also seamless so you won’t have to re-instance to join friends’ games. With a release date of September 27th, Forza Horizon 3 could once again cement the series as the top-tier racing game of the year.

NHL 17

Last year’s iteration of EA Sports’ NHL proved to be quite the hockey simulator and NHL 17 is looking to continue that trend. Along with Hockey Ultimate Team and improvements to the physics, there will be new World Cup of Hockey and Draft Champions modes, the latter differing quite significantly from HUT.  There’s also the fact that the ECHL’s 27 teams are all playable for the first time. Then there’s the new Creation Zone for crafting your own arena among other things. NHL 17 is out on September 13th in North America and September 15th in Europe.

Destiny: Rise of Iron

Even if it’s not $40 like The Taken King, Destiny’s next expansion Rise of Iron is promising quite the content delivery. Along with lots of new gear pieces across PvP and PvE, Rise of Iron will feature weapon ornaments, new lens filters, new story missions (including post-campaign quests), new artifacts, a new raid and much more. There will also be a new zone with the Plaguelands, a revamped Cosmodrome, three new PvP maps (four if you’re on PS4) and lots of other improvements. Look out for it on September 20th for PS4 and Xbox One.

Dead Rising Triple Pack

It’s not really a new release but there’s still a ton of value to be had in the Dead Rising Triple Pack. This isn’t a collection of all the past Dead Rising titles though. In fact, the Triple Pack actually contains remastered versions of Dead Rising, Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record for Xbox One and PS4. The original Dead Rising will also be releasing for PC via Steam though the other remasters are for consoles only. Dead Rising Triple Pack releases digitally on September 13th but the retail version of Dead Rising is out on September 13th in North America. Dead Rising 2 arrives shortly after on September 27th.

NBA 2K17

Welcome to the jam once again. Visual Concepts’ NBA 2K17 sees the MyGM and MyLeague modes featuring different improvements and more in-depth customization facets. For those interested in the game though, there will be national teams and past greats like the 2016 United States men’s Olympics team. It also helps that the soundtrack has been curated by Imagine Dragons among other artists. NBA 2K17 is out on September 20th worldwide.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero

WayForward Technologies blew us away with Shantae and The Pirate’s Curse in 2014 and the sequel Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is finally upon us. Along with featuring the lovable genie and her magical powers, Half-Genie Hero will also allow players to take on the role of Risky Boots, Shantae’s nemesis. Xbox One, PS4, PC, Wii U and PC users can look forward to the game releasing on September 27th while PS3 and Xbox 360 players will have to wait a bit longer.

Yo-kai Watch 2

The sequel to the popular ghost battler will finally be making its way to North America. Yo-kai Watch 2 will include new yo-kai to battle including Legendary yo-kai and promises to have almost 450 different spirits throughout the experience. Like Pokémon, Yo-kai Watch 2 will be divided into two versions – Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls. They’ll both be available for Nintendo 3DS users in North America on September 30th.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2017

What’s this? An upcoming Konami title that everyone doesn’t outright hate? PES Productions’ Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 will mark the return of “not-FIFA” to the world and offers quite the feature set. Along with Real Touch ball control and improved mechanics, there will be a match analysis feature to properly observe your opponent’s moves and the flow of matches both online and offline. Konami has also officially partnered with Liverpool FC and Borussia Dortmund to allow for exclusive content and kits among other things. PES 2017 releases on September 13th in North America and September 15th in Europe.

With this year’s game, 2K Sports will be taking the ‘Be The Legend’ marketing tagline to heart- NBA 2K17 will feature an honest to goodness legend on its cover, at least on the Legend Edition- 18-time NBA All-Star Kobe Bryant from the Los Angeles Lakers will be the cover star for this edition.

“It’s a great honor to partner with 2K on the NBA 2K17 Legend Edition,” said Kobe Bryant, who retires from basketball today. “As I walk off the NBA court for the final time, it’s exciting to know my fans can continue to celebrate my lifelong career as a Los Angeles Laker.”
