The racing game genre continues to push boundaries - here are 15 standout titles.

Of the various genres to have produced consistently great-looking games over the years, racing games are probably worth considering. The sheer output isn’t as much as one would like but with the effort and painstaking detail that some titles demand, this is more than understandable. Let’s take a look at 15 graphically stunning racing games that have released in recent times.

Gran Turismo Sport

Whether this is a “true” franchise sequel or not, Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo Sport is superb. It’s razor sharp in its focus on photo-realism, which is aided by lightning, material quality, global illumination and real-time shadows for everything. Vehicles look highly detailed, whether it’s reflecting the outside world or when admiring from the driver’s set. With numerous cars and tracks added over the years, Gran Turismo Sport is the way to go before Gran Turismo 7’s release.

Constant connectivity even during single-player? The industry has this and much more.

Games-as-a-service and “live” games have been quite the trend over the years and show no signs of slowing down. Numerous upcoming games like Fallout 76, The Division 2 and Anthem are proof of this. However, do so many games need to be always-online? We decided to take a look at 15 games throughout history that had no need to be predominantly or completely online. And yes, while some added offline options later, this doesn’t excuse the miserable launch experiences of many.

The Crew 2

What’s baffling about Ivory Tower’s The Crew 2 is the strong focus on solo play. There are no PvP options nor can you challenge any driver you meet. However, the always-online addendum still applies since other racers (all seven of them) can occupy your instance. Considering the entire game is seemingly built for the solo player with very little unique group content or PvP, why did it have to be always-online?

EA has revealed a tentative release window for two big games.

While revealing details about its financials today, EA revealed that there be a new Need for Speed title releasing in the third quarter of fiscal year 2016 (in the same quarter as Star Wars: Battlefront). However, it also revealed DICE’s reboot of Mirror’s Edge and a new Plants vs. Zombies would be out in Q4 FY 2016, so sometime between January 1st to March 31st 2016.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson stated the new Plants vs. Zombies would be a follow-up to Garden Warfare with more details coming at E3 2015.

“After Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare became a sensation last year with console players young and old, we’ll be returning to the Plants vs. Zombies universe with a bigger and bolder new console experience in FY16.”

EA also revealed a tentative release period for Titanfall 2 though it stated that it would be out in fiscal year 2017. What are your thoughts on the plethora of upcoming AAA titles from EA? Let us know in the comments.

Feeling the Need for Speed? Sadly, the movie will be the only release in the franchise this year.

We won’t be seeing a new Need for Speed title this year according to EA in a recent post-earnings conference call. Ghost Games, which developed last year’s Need for Speed Rivals and suffered lay-offs and other redundancies, is apparently working on the next game and EA has allocated another year of development for the same.

Ghost Games general manager Marcus Nilsson stated the same in a recent open letter. “We are already deep in development on our next game and want to make this promise to you: we will listen to you. We’re going to give you the game you’ve been asking for. It will be the game you deserve, but to do that will take us some time.

“We’ve made the decision to not release a Need for Speed in 2014, so we can work towards a highly innovative Need for Speed in 2015. An experience built on a foundation we know you’ll greatly look forward to.”

Expect Ghost Games to get involved with the community in the mean time and take its help to “shape the future of Need for Speed”.

“We want your input on future gameplay and features we know you’re passionate about. We will keep innovating, always making sure to continue the celebration of cars and the joy they bring. That’s all we can share for now but remember this is just the beginning. We’re excited and ready, so come along and join the conversation.”

So we can scratch Need for Speed off of our E3 2014 wishlist. Stay tuned for more details.
