But it looks like there may be some more stick of the micro console ahead of Christmas.

Nintendo may not be launching the NX this year, but they’ll still have new hardware on sale this Holiday season. But with the NES Mini, they’re going backwards in time, not looking towards the future. The NES Mini is going to be a small emulation box that comes pre-loaded with 30 NES games, and which is a miniature replica of the original, classic Nintendo console that resurrected the gaming industry 30 years ago.

This blast from the past has apparently been a huge hit with customers- Amazon UK are indicating that the console has sold out, although more units are expected by Christmas.

“Due to limited stock we are only able to offer one unit per customer per address. You will be notified via email of the expected delivery date closer to the time. We will be fulfilling customer orders in the order in which they were placed, and expect to fill all pre-orders by mid-December 2016,” Amazon said.

Sounds like Nintendo may have a good Holiday season after all- let’s just hope that they use the positive momentum to assist their launch for the Nintendo NX.

The best way to play these NES games.

Nintendo’s upcoming NES Mini, their emulation based re-release of their classic and industry defining console, will apparently have a number of features that will make it the definitive way for players to play the 30 NES games that are included on it- for players disinterested in investing in Nintendo’s Virtual Console service, anyway.

The console, which otherwise features HDMI video output, will reportedly have special display modes, including a pixel perfect mode, as well as one that outputs the image in a traditional 4:3 display aspect ratio, to maintain visual accuracy.

That’s not all, either- the NES Mini will also include functionality which is otherwise the primary appeal of game emulators: save states. Nintendo have confirmed that the NES Mini will have temporary saves, which seems to imply ephemeral Quick Save save states that get deleted as soon as you resume your progress from a loaded one. That is ultimately the best and fairest way to marry modern convenience with these old games without breaking their balance and design.

The NES Mini will come later this year for $60. It will feature a miniature recreation of the NES hardware and controller, and come with 30 classic games loaded on to it, including Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy, and Castlevania II.

Nostalgia alert!

Nintendo used to have one of the best slogans for their products back in the day, the refrain that set their products apart from just about every other competing product on the market, and instantly sold Nintendo as cool, hip, and happening. it was quintessentially ’80s, and it remains one of their most enduring marketing legacies yet.

And now they are bringing it back. With the launch of the NES Mini later this year, the new emulation box that will let players play classic Nintendo games over an HDMI enabled box, Nintendo have also revived the marketing slogan that accompanied their very first system: ‘Now you are playing with power.’

Yup, it’s back. And it is every bit as giddily awesome as you would imagine. You can check it out at the end of this (otherwise really good) trailer introducing the new system below. The NES Mini launches later this year.

The return of the king.

The last few years have made a very compelling argument that there is no room or demand for Nintendo in the larger market. Where Nintendo continues to stick to its way of doing things, the larger market has passed it by, and no longer cares for it- the failure of the Wii U, and Nintendo’s games no longer making the kind of splash they used to, have contributed to this way of thinking catching on.

However, the last few months have shown us several instances that seem to indicate the exact opposite. The incredible reception that Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild got at E3, for example, or the wild success of Pokemon GO, all seem to indicate that the market is more than willing for Nintendo goodness- it is hungry for it. Nintendo just has to meet the market halfway, and give them something they want.

Now we have something else to add to that list of recent successes for the beleaguered Japanese giant- the recently announced NES Mini, a modern recreation of Nintendo’s classic NES console, which comes with 30 games pre-installed, and HDMi upscaling and output, has apparently met resounding success- in fact, VideoGamer reports that the system is now topping PC and Video Game charts on Amazon UK, outperforming several highly anticipated games, such as No Man’s Sky, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Mafia, and FIFA.

The fact that this success comes for Nintendo in the UK, a region that is famously indifferent to Nintendo at best, is the icing on the cake- it indicates that people do want Nintendo products. Nintendo just need to make products that are at least slightly desirable.

This bodes well for the NX launch, going forward- let’s just hope that the NX isn’t something odd and quirky that the larger market won’t care for as well, though.

Spencer sounds off on the big news of the day.

The big news today was that against all odds, Nintendo will be launching a new console this Holiday season after all- it just won’t be the NX. Instead, they will be launching the NES Classic Mini, a re-release of their first console, and the one tat revolutionized the gaming industry, bundling it with 30 games, all for a price point of $60.

Speaking on Twitter, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, confirmed that he will definitely buy the NES Mini, noting a necessity to keep older games playable. He also mentioned that an Xbox app on Mac could happen, but right now it is just a question of development priorities. How that would work, especially since the Xbox app is an integral component of the Xbox Anywhere ecosystem, is anybody’s guess (and really just a hypothetical question at this point).

Finally, Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg also confirmed that Xbox has plans for San Diego Comic Can this year, that they will be sharing soon. I don’t think one can expect any new announcements from Xbox at Comic Con, but at the very least, there should be some upcoming Xbox games playable, if nothing else.

Absolutely. Keeping our artform's classics playable is important for gaming imo. Retro HW is a cool way to do this.
