Following on Japan's discontinuation, the handheld is now discontinued in Europe.

Nintendo’s decision to halt production of the New 3DS – that is, the base model of the updated 3DS handheld – started in Japan. However, Nintendo of Europe has now confirmed to GameSpot that the New 3DS has been discontinued in its region as well.

While this does leave Nintendo of America to provide confirmation of discontinuation, the New 3DS didn’t exactly “launch” in the region. It was only available in limited bundles. As such, we can probably consider the New Nintendo 3DS to be discontinued worldwide.

There’s no need to worry for the future of the handheld though. The Nintendo 2DS, New 2DS XL and New 3DS XL are still available to purchase. Nintendo also continues to support the handheld with games, the latest being Ever Oasis and newer releases like Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon to come.

What are your thoughts on the New Nintendo 3DS being discontinued however? Let us know in the comments below.

PS4 sells 46,177 units in the past week.

The latest Media Create sales for gaming hardware and software in Japan are in and it seems the price cut for the PS4 has done a world of good. Compared to the prior week where the console sold 4,071 units, it managed to sell 46,177 units after the price cut. That’s more than a ten fold increase. This was followed by the New 3DS XL at 18,136 units sold and the PS Vita with 15,237 units sold.

On the software side of things, the PS Vita actually had some success with the debut of Tokyo Xanadu which sold 88,879 units. This was followed by Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 for the PS3 and PS4 which sold 48,473 units and 39,017 units respectively. Yoru no Nai Kuni on the PS4 and Vita also debuted with 35,907 and 32,904 units sold respectively.

The other new release was Picross 3D 2 on the Nintendo 3DS which sold 30,468 units. Many of Nintendo’s other big players, namely Yo-kai Watch Busters: Red Cat Team/White Dog Squad, Super Mario Maker, Splatoon and Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon continue to see good sales.

What are your thoughts on PS4 sales following the price cut? Let us know in the comments.

However, it's only slightly ahead of the New Nintendo 3DS XL.

Media Create’s Japanese hardware sales are out for the previous week and despite the New Nintendo 3DS XL being in the top spot, Sony’s PlayStation 4 has staged a comeback and overtaken it. However, the difference in numbers isn’t very significant.

PS4 sold 11,489 units last week compared to the New 3DS XL racking up 11,340 units sold. The PlayStation Vita is slightly behind with 10,685 units while the Nintendo Wii U only managed to sell 6,428 units. The New 3DS’s numbers aren’t as significant as its XL brethren, selling only 3,483 units in the past week. However, 3DS XL and 3DS sales have pretty much ground to a halt with 790 and 742 units sold respectively.

The PS4’s win over the New 3DS XL is fairly self-explanatory as Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster released the prior week. Despite only selling 15,913 units in its debut it still managed to push the PS4 into a winning position, if only slightly. What are your thoughts on this week’s hardware numbers? Let us know in the comments.

Dragon Quest X: Legend of the Ancient Dragon Online also debuts.

It’s been a rather interesting week for the Wii U and New 3DS in Japan. According to the latest Media Create Charts, not only did the Wii U sell roughly 3 times the number of units the previous week as compared to the week before but the eagerly awaited Xenoblade Chronicles X was in fact not the top selling game across all platforms.

Instead, that honour went to Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition which raked in 179,926 units in its first week. Dragon Quest X: Legend of the Ancient Dragon Online came in second with 98,923 units, this too being its debut week. Meanwhile, Xenoblade Chronicles X only managed to sell 85,586 units in its opening week. Perhaps it will pick up over time?

Nintendo has been doing pretty good regardless. Bravely Second: End Layer managed to sell 20,195 units the past week with 120,242 units over its lifetime. The PlayStation Vita had a number of titles in the top ten including Minecraft: PS Vita Edition (which sold 16,166 units the past week and totaled 125,951 units in its lifetime). The handheld surprisingly outsold the New Nintendo 3DS XL but barely with 17,748 units versus 17,062 units respectively.

Those making a digital purchase will require large microSD cards.

All eyes are on Monolith Soft’s Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Wii U but if you haven’t had a chance to experience the original game, then one should check out Xenoblade Chronicles 3D for the New 3DS/3DS XL. It’s a port of the original game for the handheld and still contains roughly 100 hours of gameplay.

Unfortunately, those who pick up the downloadable version will need a big microSD card. Xenoblade Chronicles 3D will require a microSD card that’s 8 GB or larger according to Nintendo UK. You could also pick up the retail version, of course, but those making a digital purchase should pay heed.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is out on April 2nd in Europe and April 10th in North America. Xenoblade Chronicles X, on the other hand, will be out on April 29th in Japan for the Wii U. Stay tuned for more information on a Western release in the coming months.

Charging cable still not included.

One of the most ubiquitous things about the original 3DS model, when it launched way back in 2011, was the charging cradle. It looked nice and sexy, and it also meant that any time you weren’t using your 3DS, you were charging it, which helped take the sting off of the handheld’s poor battery life. But over time, Nintendo started to de-emphasize the charging cradle – it didn’t come packed in with the XL models like it did with the original, and one doesn’t exist for the 2DS. The New 3DS XL models technically have cradles, but Nintendo of America did not announce plans to bring them over, and the system doesn’t even come with a charger included, let alone a cradle.

Well, it looks like any fears about the availability of the cradle were unfounded- you can now grab them off of Nintendo’s Online Store for yourself. They cost $9, so they aren’t all that expensive. They also don’t come with the power cord included.

Personally, however, I would get one- the convenience of the cradle simply cannot be overstated.

Though the New Nintendo 3DS XL – and the handheld in general since its introduction – has been selling well in Japan, the PlayStation Vita managed to top the hardware charts in the past week in Japan according to the latest sales data from Media Create. The Vita sold 35,203 units up from the prior week’s 10,901 units followed by the PS4 with 24,737 units sold.

The top-selling title was God Eater 2: Rage Burst on the Vita which managed to sell 234,180 units. The New 3DS XL still had a decent week with 23,466 units sold though this is down significantly from the prior week which saw 41,821 units sold with the debut of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D (which has since moved down to second place in the charts with 71,181 units the past week and 302,246 units over its lifetime).

Meanwhile, The Order: 1886 saw a decent debut in Japan on the PS4 with 25,023 units sold. What are your thoughts on the PS Vita’s success though? Let us know in the comments.

The latest Media Create sales charts are out and along with revealing strong sales for Super Smash Bros. Wii U – which released on December 6th and managed to sell 227,527 units in a single day (with the charts tallied up to December 7th – they showcase increased sales for the Wii U.

The Wii U managed to sell 24,469 units which is nearly doubly that of the previous week’s sales of 12,496 units. The 3DS XL and 3DS also did very well but the New 3DS XL took the charts with 63,417 units sold in the week. Nintendo is currently working on phasing out the old 3DS XL model in Japan which explains the uptick in New 3DS XL sales.

The only consoles that saw a slight decrease in sales were the PS Vita, Xbox 360/One and PS Vita TV. What are your thoughts on the success of the Wii U though following the release of Super Smash Bros. Wii U? Let us know in the comments.

Nintendo’s New 3DS XL has been available in Japan for some time and while it may only include incremental changes to the overall experience, it’s currently experiencing strong sales. The week prior saw 50,619 units sold while the New 3DS sold 15,020 units and this week, the New 3DS XL managed to notch up a strong 38,457 units sold.

The PlayStation Vita managed to regain some lost ground this week with 19,301 units. The PS4 managed to sell 15,537 in part due to the releases of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Pro Evolution Soccer 2015 (which still sold better on the PS3). Whether Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was financially successful or not, Wii U sales continue to be strong in Japan with 14,002 units sold this week. Finally, the New 3DS stands at 13,373 units sold this week.

For those curious, the Xbox One is performing rather poorly with 2,245 units sold in the past week. Though Microsoft easily has the Holiday season on lockdown for North America and Europe, will it be able to succeed in Japan? Stay tuned for more information on the same.

Region-locking to not apply for Europe and Australia.

Nintendo held a Direct presentation this morning and provided some much needed new information on its upcoming 3DS successor. The New Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL will be launching this year on November 21st for both Australia and New Zealand. Meanwhile, North America and Europe will only receive it in 2015 with a more concrete release date to be revealed down the line.

The 3DS will AU$219.95 or £119 while the 3DS XL will cost AU$249.95 or £135 when it releases. A total of 20 face plates will be available when it launches and Nintendo has confirmed (via Videogamer) that Australian handhelds can play UK games. No region-locking in this particular instance, since Europe and Australia are apparently the same region. The rest of the world? Tough luck.

Xenoblade Chronicles on the New 3DS will be out in 2015 according to Nintendo with more details to follow later. Thoughts? Let us know in the comments below.
