Possibly the most iconic Nintendo console, at least in terms of how it looked, was the Nintendo GameCube. A large part of this had to do with the console’s eponymous cube-like shape, coupled with its friendly handle that just invited users to take it along with them as they went to their friends’ homes. But another big reason was the shocking purple color Nintendo decided to sell the thing in- the same purple color that was also the default for the original Gameboy Advance.

Now, we’re going to be getting a blast from the past, when the New Nintendo 2DS XL purple and silver model launches on September 27. The model will come bundled with Mario Kart 7, for the standard retail price of $150.

Nintendo has also announced that going forward from that day, all 2DS XL models in all colors will come included with a copy of Mario Kart 7, for no additional cost. So that’s good. Take a look below.

Comes pre-installed with The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

Nintendo has announced a brand new special edition 3DS (well, 2DS, really, but it’s all the same) SKU launching in the US on July 2- the Hylian Shield New Nintendo 2DS XL. The top of the system is styled like the Hylian Shield, the iconic shield that Zelda series protagonist Link is most associated with.

The best part is, the system also comes with The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, the fantastic 2D Zelda game that reimagined the seminal 1992 SNES game A Link to the Past, pre-installed. A Link Between Worlds is a great game, and definitely the best title on the 3DS- so Nintendo has chosen wisely here, at the very least.

The system will come in at $160 (so $10 more than a standard New 2DS XL), and will be available exclusively through GameStop (in the US) and EB Games (in Canada).

Now, I don’t know about you guys, but I think I might be trading in my system for this one in the coming weeks…

Reggie Fils-Aime says it's "in between" the 2DS and 3DS XL.

The DS line-up will be expanded once again when the New Nintendo 2DS XL releases in July. Priced at $149 and boasting improved processing power, it will serve as the definitive non-3D handheld from Nintendo.

However, many have asked about the need for the New 2DS XL. Speaking to Time, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime noted that the new handheld will stay “in between” the 2DS and 3DS XL.

“The Nintendo 2DS really focused on that entry level gamer. The four-, five-, six-year old that is just getting into gaming, but wants to play Mario Kart, wants to have a Super Mario Bros. experience, wants to play Pokémon. And we feel with Nintendo 3DS XL at $199 that it’s a fully-featured product, that it is, if you will, the Cadillac of handheld gaming. And then we heard from consumers, ‘Boy, I wish there was something in between.'” This resulted in the New 2DS XL’s creation.

The New Nintendo 2DS XL will be available on July 28th in North America and Europe at $149/£133.

Features XL screens and more processing power.

There’s a new DS on the horizon but it’s not the 3DS. Nintendo has announced the New Nintendo 2DS XL which will be releasing in July and retailing for $150.

Along with XL screens, built-in Amiibo functionality and a C-stick for “enhanced controls”, the New 2DS XL sports a revamped folding design. Unlike the 3DS, it doesn’t have stereoscopic 3D functionality. However, given how most people opt to play with the 3D off, it’s probably a better deal.

Plus with adding processing power, you’ll be able to handle more recent releases like Pokemon Sun and Moon and the upcoming Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.

Despite the Switch’s release, the 3DS is still going strong with releases like Hey Pikmin and Miitopia coming up. What are your thoughts on yet another iteration of the DS hardware? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more updates in the coming months.
